Miami isn't back, but...

Reuben Bain is really good. I am trying to remember a freshman ever playing this well on the Dline
Was Rusty Medearis this good as a freshman? We may need a true Canes historian to help on this. @Brooklyndee, @SWFLHurricane ??
I can't think of anyone that dominated like some of his snaps as a true frosh. Kids gonna be REALLY GOOD...

...Miami is back on track. This thing was about to go off the rails. Mario was at risk of losing the team's trust after the Georgia Tech meltdown. We were staring at three losses in a row with a backup QB against the most dominant ACC program of the decade. The pre-game vibe at the Rock felt like a funeral. Now, it's a whole new season.

- For all his faults, Mario has done two things he promised. First, he's upgraded our trench talent. This is a Clemson team that had our OL doing splits in the backfield a couple years ago. But last night, Miami was overwhelming on both lines. They ran for 211 yards and gave up 31. Sacked Clemson five times and gave up zero. It was a bludgeoning. That type of trench play is a sustainable base for greatness.

The other thing Mario has done is build a physical team. All that tough offseason talk is showing up on Saturdays. Miami needed a yard and got it. Clemson needed a yard and couldn't get it. That's proof of culture.

- Forget building a waterslide in the weight room. If we want to spend money, send a bag of cash to Lance Guidry's house. His 3-3-5 look flustered Clemson's run game. He has now outclassed Bobby Petrino and Garrett Riley.

- I won't lie- I was in the group chat calling for Emory Williams to sit out a series (or more) in favor of Jacurri Brown. He looked like he had no confidence in the first half. But once he saw a couple shots go through the net, he began playing like the guy who impressed the coaches all camp. And when Dawson called a couple shot plays (as @LuCane was calling for), he delivered with catchable deep balls for his WR. Loved his interview on ACCN after the game- he is the definition of a God-fearing, humble kid.

- Yes, we've struck out on five-star DL this year. But we signed a six-star last year. Reuben Bain was throwing people out of the club. Elite play strength and motor. I can't remember any true freshman DL that has ever looked like that at Miami.

- I wanted to highlight Derek Nicholson, the first-year LB coach. That unit is night-and-day from last year and didn't look out of place in comparison to Clemson's elite unit. Francisco Mauigoa and KJ Cloyd were everywhere. Cloyd in particular held up admirably in coverage despite being isolated numerous times. With guys like Chase Smith and Popo Aguirre waiting in the wings, the physical talent is only getting stronger.

- Of course, we need to talk about Corey Flagg. He's a guy who has taken a beating online for things he can't change. But he's worked hard, made plays (21.5 career TFLs) and now has a highlight that will stick with him for the rest of his life.

- James Williams is starting to look like the player everyone envisioned. That torn labrum was real- he is a new player now that he's healthy. On top of his play, he's an emotional leader on this team. He was one of the first guys to find Emory Williams after the game and brings the juice consistently.

- Two guys who have flown a bit under the radar but are having outstanding seasons- Daryl Porter, Jr. and Te'Cory Couch. Porter has been invisible all year (in a good way), while Couch has been a terror on blitzes and sticky in coverage. Give Coach Addae some credit for their development.

- Leonard Taylor responded to last week's no-show with an NFL performance. So did Jared Harrison-Hunte. For two guys who were supposed to be pass-rush specialists, they were stout at the point of attack.

Miami has the soft part of the schedule coming up. But Georgia Tech was supposed to be an easy game, too. This is a huge opportunity to stay focused and reverse the narrative of this season. See you at the UVA game.
It always has and always will start in the trenches and we’ve made INCREDIBLE progress in that area. We just bullied the team who has owned the LOS in our league for the past decade. Still a ways to go in terms of overall depth but the change is truly night and day!!

Was pointing out to my wife all night that Young was one on one. I was screaming for us to take some shots. Finally started to do it in the 2nd half. Clearly Dawson doesn’t trust Emory. That late INT throwing to George might explain why. Need to ramp the kid up in case he has to play against Virginia. Clemson was stacking the box and we still ran in them. The WR screens weren’t working so he shouldVe scraped that early on. Why no Brown? Figured he could give us a threat on a few QB runs. Shocked we didn’t see him play last night when the offense was stuck in mud.
I would love to see a bit more creativity from Dawson too. The reverse with Harrell was a good play but our center tripped and was called for a penalty.

But to be fair we did ramp the kid up. The WR screens are needed to build his confidence. The game plan was right to be conservative. Emory was visibly nervous and skittish the first half (99% of true freshmen QBs are in their first game). You know this. The last thing you want to do is keep calling for deep shots and throw multiple INTs or incompletions to destroy any confidence he may have.

The second half you could see he was a lot calmer and locked in. The run forced Clemson to commit another guy leaving more room to pass.

Thankfully Guidry, Bain, and the boys on defense said “don’t worry we got this.”

I thought I was watching Warren Sapp. Going to enjoy these 3 years watching him.
You thought you were watching a Colorado game???

Said it last night at the end of the game thread. The 4 tough games A&M, UNC, Clemson, FSU....we played 3 and are 2-1. Im glad we ended 1 streak. Clemson had beaten us either 4 or 5 times in a row. I wasnt calling for JB to be the starter. But why cant we use packages we used with him last year? Are they saving him for FSU?

Also aint it funny that without TVD, we finally can run the ball. I am of the mind they been too quick to abandon the run game simply because they have TVD. He is not a QB i want slinging the ball 40 times. 20-30 times with a strong run game.
No! Miami couldn't run the ball against A&M nor could Alabama! Guess how Miami and Alabama beat A&M. They threw the ball! TVD can sling the ball! However, if his main routes are solely on the outside with the middle not being targeted by the TE, deep middle passes, crosses or slants, your severely hampering your passing game! Go back and watch the A&M game. TVD didn't attack them with slants, crossers or midfield throws. It was all on the outside with elite contested throws to not just Restrepo, George and Young. That's right! TVD was hitting all the starting WR which made Miami basically unguardable in the passing despite not using the TE as a passing threat. In our modern times, with the rules favoring the offenses, your going to have to win 2 to 4 games by outscoring people. That is with the passing! You really need to watch the 2021 season again after TVD became the starter. TVD passing is what kept Miami in games and eventually winning their last 5 out of 6 which should have been 6 out of 6 if not for 4th and 17 against FSU!

We're talking top 10 pick if he continues to develop. Clemson QB gonna have nightmares with this guy

By no means am I an expert on DL technique, but he seems pretty **** developed already (pause). What he's going to face a lot more is consistent double teams and RBs TEs staying in to help.

A&M has one of the bedt defense in the nation. Totally understandable. GT and UNC however do not. I do not want TVD throwing 40 passes or anywhere close. And btw, he threw 30 v A&M. Which is the number i said. So yeah.

It’s time to put the GT game and Mario bashing behind us. We all saw something last night we havnt seen in a very long time. A team that came together as a team rallied around a frosh QB and never quit. We physically beat the **** out of Clemson on both sides of the ball. Dawson said after the game it was the toughest game he ever called. The O line and the D played a great game. The physicality of the game was something we havnt seen in a long time. Emory is young but I’m sure he learned a lot last night and his confidence soared. There were no prima Donna’s last night just hard nosed smash mouth football and no one quit. Mario is doing it his way. it’s great to be a Miami hurricane. I don’t think we had any motion penalties last night.
