Miami isn't back, but...

...Miami is back on track. This thing was about to go off the rails. Mario was at risk of losing the team's trust after the Georgia Tech meltdown. We were staring at three losses in a row with a backup QB against the most dominant ACC program of the decade. The pre-game vibe at the Rock felt like a funeral. Now, it's a whole new season.

- For all his faults, Mario has done two things he promised. First, he's upgraded our trench talent. This is a Clemson team that had our OL doing splits in the backfield a couple years ago. But last night, Miami was overwhelming on both lines. They ran for 211 yards and gave up 31. Sacked Clemson five times and gave up zero. It was a bludgeoning. That type of trench play is a sustainable base for greatness.

The other thing Mario has done is build a physical team. All that tough offseason talk is showing up on Saturdays. Miami needed a yard and got it. Clemson needed a yard and couldn't get it. That's proof of culture.

- Forget building a waterslide in the weight room. If we want to spend money, send a bag of cash to Lance Guidry's house. His 3-3-5 look flustered Clemson's run game. He has now outclassed Bobby Petrino and Garrett Riley.

- I won't lie- I was in the group chat calling for Emory Williams to sit out a series (or more) in favor of Jacurri Brown. He looked like he had no confidence in the first half. But once he saw a couple shots go through the net, he began playing like the guy who impressed the coaches all camp. And when Dawson called a couple shot plays (as @LuCane was calling for), he delivered with catchable deep balls for his WR. Loved his interview on ACCN after the game- he is the definition of a God-fearing, humble kid.

- Yes, we've struck out on five-star DL this year. But we signed a six-star last year. Reuben Bain was throwing people out of the club. Elite play strength and motor. I can't remember any true freshman DL that has ever looked like that at Miami.

- I wanted to highlight Derek Nicholson, the first-year LB coach. That unit is night-and-day from last year and didn't look out of place in comparison to Clemson's elite unit. Francisco Mauigoa and KJ Cloyd were everywhere. Cloyd in particular held up admirably in coverage despite being isolated numerous times. With guys like Chase Smith and Popo Aguirre waiting in the wings, the physical talent is only getting stronger.

- Of course, we need to talk about Corey Flagg. He's a guy who has taken a beating online for things he can't change. But he's worked hard, made plays (21.5 career TFLs) and now has a highlight that will stick with him for the rest of his life.

- James Williams is starting to look like the player everyone envisioned. That torn labrum was real- he is a new player now that he's healthy. On top of his play, he's an emotional leader on this team. He was one of the first guys to find Emory Williams after the game and brings the juice consistently.

- Two guys who have flown a bit under the radar but are having outstanding seasons- Daryl Porter, Jr. and Te'Cory Couch. Porter has been invisible all year (in a good way), while Couch has been a terror on blitzes and sticky in coverage. Give Coach Addae some credit for their development.

- Leonard Taylor responded to last week's no-show with an NFL performance. So did Jared Harrison-Hunte. For two guys who were supposed to be pass-rush specialists, they were stout at the point of attack.

Miami has the soft part of the schedule coming up. But Georgia Tech was supposed to be an easy game, too. This is a huge opportunity to stay focused and reverse the narrative of this season. See you at the UVA game.

There were a few elite plays last night that will go under the radar.

James Williams “mono e mono” tackle in open space of Shipley preventing a TD in OT was amazing and likely saved the game.

Said it last night at the end of the game thread. The 4 tough games A&M, UNC, Clemson, FSU....we played 3 and are 2-1. Im glad we ended 1 streak. Clemson had beaten us either 4 or 5 times in a row. I wasnt calling for JB to be the starter. But why cant we use packages we used with him last year? Are they saving him for FSU?

Also aint it funny that without TVD, we finally can run the ball. I am of the mind they been too quick to abandon the run game simply because they have TVD. He is not a QB i want slinging the ball 40 times. 20-30 times with a strong run game.
Crazy right? When we went jumbo all of a sudden we had this creative package of runs.

I agree even with TVD we can go big and be an even bigger threat with his potential passing/RPO and running.

Great post. Respectfully, I disagree Mario was about to lose the team’s trust, as crazy as that sounds. Unlike many teams in the last 20 years (divided players, not buying in), this team is very unified and all in. I hear the culture with this team is impressive and will be getting better with time. The few who aren’t on the same page (won’t name names) will be gone next year.

But point taken on thread.

Not to put a damper on this but someone mentioned a miami guy getting carted to the locker room late in the game? Any ideas

💯

A few points, and I’ll use your mention as an opportunity:

- I like Dawson’s obvious change from what we saw last season. I tip my cap for the TAMU change and the obvious difference in formation and especially route space. I thought his GT plan was bizarrely non-existent and I simply cannot wrap my head around why we’re insisting on keeping a *sometimes* non-threat, Cam, in the slot or otherwise flex’d out.

When it was strictly a wrinkle to move him in motion for our running game, I better understood. Now, I’m non-stop yelling for his spot to be replaced - at least in spurts - by a WR or anyone with some speed to win matchups. I’ve repeated this maybe 250x since GT and its importance is as much threatening and dictating to the defense as it is actual expectation of that output.

- everything I said last night in a group chat we have also applies to TVD. Again, given the above, I have no real issues with Dawson other than when his approach has a heavy Mario flavor to it. The reality is offense dictates a lot in modern football, and I want our program to ‘throw punches’ (be aggressive). I fully understand what Emory Williams looked like and what the ‘let’s keep this close’ plan probably was for last night. I do *NOT* think Williams is ‘ready’ and I’m not a ‘start Williams over TVD’ advocate. In fact, I know we miss TVD (obviously) and I want us to fully play into his strengths, too.

- If/When TVD returns, I beg for at least 25% of our lineups to look like this: (a) Young, George, Restrepo, Ray Ray or Horton, AND Smith. That means MORE of using Smith like the mini, quick-based version of Deebo Samuel. (B) more up tempo on occasion (this part I realize was really out of line last night. (C) more RPO. I don’t know where the RPO has gone in our playcalling, but everyone could benefit from more of it, IMO.

- We should have at least attempted a few vertical shots (like the one Young received and was broken up) once their defense was creeping half of South Carolina into the box. My issue with this was and is broader than Emory. I concede what Mario wants to do. But, if you want to run the ball, you want your OL to have matchup numbers, too, no? I’d like to see us achieve that more and more via formation and personnel grouping.

- Mario seemingly wants to establish an identity of ‘physicality.’ We all know. I’m for it. I wish it’d be broader: an identity of putting the max pressure on defenses and being uncomfortably (to the opponent and anyone watching) aggressive. THROW PUNCHES EARLY AND OFTEN.

I will now just enjoy the victory for a few days.
I see it both ways.

This team is still prone to mistakes.

And we are just as likely to make a big play for the other team as we are for us.

I think there were chances to take more vertical shots especially late in the game but I don’t fault the coaches for leaning on the strength of this offense which is the Oline

You can ‘lean on’ the OL without going 2 TE. In fact, you can help the OL by putting a bunch more speed on the field and making this a fight between our OL and a 5 or 6 man box. It becomes a 6 on 6 drill instead of a 6 vs 7 or 6 vs 8 (many times last night) drill.

And, I’m not saying always. I like when they occasionally bring the extra OL. I’m asking for this simply more than the % we currently see it, which is mainly when we get down or desperately need more speed (eg garbage time vs UNC).

If Chaney did get banged up or is out we really need Fletcher and Citizen - do we see either soon?
Rb room is starting to get thin. I swear I saw Parrish on the sidelines suited up last night but he never played. It's he's back hopefully Miami can get thru UVA with him and Allen but they def need to get healthy there

Nice win for the kid against a top 8-10 defense…But Jesus lord you have to give Brown a series or two when you are throwing for 3 yards an attempt late in the 3rd? " Bro ball" as everyone ******* about, basically won us this game out of necessity (You couldn't expect Williams to win it), and that would have been much easier with Brown pounding a way for a series or two, along with the backs. But it's like we can't think outside the box at all? Dawson/CMC can't realize that you can play Brown and it's not a slight to the future prospects of Williams.

Don't forget Bissainthe…He is all over the field when he's in the game.

Not being talked about enough. James Williams may be the best overall player on this defense this year imo (Bain obviously is moving up fast lol)…He looks excellent.

Porter definitely a pleasant surprise. Couch was very good last night… Has his ups and downs and is what he is, I do like the way we are using him though. Having nice senior season.

- Leonard Taylor responded to last week's no-show with an NFL performance.

Maybe we should keep playing him for more than 35 defensive snaps per game? Good things happen, amazing.

So did Jared Harrison-Hunte. For two guys who were supposed to be pass-rush specialists, they were stout at the point of attack.

Big senior year for JHH imo…I think he can get drafted mid to late.

For all of you that were *****ing that Mario threw his players under the bus ....
