If Manny is betting on himself...

Manny's a fool. You can't be two things. Being a top HC isn't an easy job to do, and now he takes time away from those responsibilities. So he'll call plays...so what, his buddy can't run the defense, and he's a flat out lousy LB coach. Bye, bye Manny

To me this says Manny doesn’t want another up and comer and wasn’t able to land the DC he wanted this off-season.

instead of leaving it to baker and almost certainly doming himself he’s decided to take the reigns.

baker will probably be quit at the end of the season unless their is massive success and Manny can take another swing next year....if he retains his job.

One other thing to consider- when Manny got fired at Texas, there was a lot of talk about defensive staff in-fighting and struggles over control.

My guess is that experience influenced Manny's decision here.
We were just told same thing was happening on the staff this year. Seems Manny is struggling with his own growth/learning.

jimbo fisher calls his plays and he’s a top
HC, same with Chip Kelly. Gary Patterson use to the call the plays for his defense ( I don’t know if he still does) I can list even more from the NFL HC ranks.

now I will say that you don’t see it much on the defensive side of the ball. But it has worked for some.

The problem with keeping Baker is he did a poor job calling the defense but he also hasn't recruited or developed anyone. So even if he doesn't poison the scheme, philosophy and gameplanning (with his DC title) he's still a lousy LB coach that needs to be replaced.

We upgraded the secondary recruiting and we added back Simpson who knows his ****. Manny can call defense we just need more out of the defensive line and we need another corner. We will be fine. My concern is the qb position. Losing our starter who is mobile to an ACL injury sucks. I believe in our team I'm hoping with the upperclassmen coming back and another year with Lashlee we're solid.

I said it before, not hiring a new DC is the same saving move as hiring a new one. He has no one on defense to scapegoat next year if the defense sucks. This is all on him now and if he doesn't produce he's the problem and has to ******* go. IMO he wasted his move and will pay for it this time next year.
Manny, you know that little glow that's starting to blink in the corner of your eye? That's your career dissipation light. It just went into overtime.

I don't want to hear any excuses if we lose big to Alabama.

I don't want to hear **** about "oh it's Alabama bro, we knew we didn't have a chance bro..."

Manny has done absolutely nothing to improve the team this offseason. Blake is STILL THE DC. So what if Manny is taking over playcalling? That's only one small part of what a DC does, and it's only one of many issues our defense had.

And that's the point. NOW is the time to get better from last year. We have our opportunity now to get better. And all Manny is showing is that he's happy with where we're at. Hence why no changes.

So when we lose to Alabama, I don't want to hear it. He's had 3 years at that point to build this thing.

Forget bad optics, this is a terrible decision. Call it like it is. Why the **** are you allowing some of these guys to remain on staff? The worst defensive games in the history of the program are attributed to Baker and Co. Not a single defensive coach was let go, but last year, everyone on offense was canned, cmon. Manny is doomed, and even if Manny is given another year after next season and he wants to make changes, who will come to work for a lame duck? Banda? Program is in trouble.

Manny has tied himself to Baker. The fact that he's going to call the plays is an ovious indictment on Baker.

I can't believe that he didn't make a change at DC. By calling the the plays, he has sealed his own fate in the outcome. If the defense doesn't improve, how does Manny get a pass when it's his scheme and he's calling the plays? This is the worst move to make IMO.

So, does Manny plan to keep Baker for 2022 and beyond? If not, then why is he keeping him around?

Yes, and 6 with the defense

...he can't keep the "Hire a DC" card in his pocket for next year. He has to get it done. Hopefully, that's been made clear to him.

I'm surprised by the move. I always viewed Manny as a political/media type. This is a decision with bad optics. We all remember the Coach D fiasco. The political move would have been to fire Baker, hire a DC and shift the blame. He's putting it on himself.

The good news is that Manny's defenses were strong. His last defense as DC finished 3rd in yards per play, 1st in third down defense and 1st in pass defense. His recent resume is objectively better than any DC available. The bad news is that Blake was running Manny's defense last year. Is Manny that much better as a playcaller, or are there deeper issues?

I like the Jess Simpson hire. He was the DL coach on the '18 defense, which finished 1st in P5 in sack rate and was our best in a decade. Everything I've heard internally is that he was a superstar. DVD is fine as long as TRob is the man. I suspect he is and that he's on board with this plan.

The LBs are going to be the key. That position doomed us last year with Manny's recruits. We didn't get a fresh set of eyes there. What is going to change?

All told, this is a pivotal year for Manny. Will he go down like Golden or save his own career? He just cranked the pressure to 11.
You hit the nail on the head in your linebacker part dmoney. No new eyes means McLeod/Jennings or whatever other upperclassmen scrubs will be rolled out there to start next year and will get run on like live a siv trying to hold water. Only bright spot is green horn manure and ticket salesman James will be escorted off property for good.

There's a reason, and I guarantee it's not because Diaz thinks these are the best coaches on earth.
Well then enlighten us, what’s the reason? Could it be Diaz has no connections because he’s never number one been a head coach or number two even played the **** game? That’d be my guess, oh and most likely a lack of respect in the coaching industry for the two reasons I listed.

Was waiting for someone to bring up Jimbo. The famous James Coley who cut his teeth as Jimbos “gameplan/strategy” guy while at FSU did this very job that Baker is doing..(and Coley was the Co-OC too in title) He obviously was a horrible playcaller as OC and we found that out the hard way. So maybe this can work. Baker helps with the gameplan and scouting during the week and come gameday hands the reigns to Manny. This can work. Even though it’s not ideal it’s not impossible.

The University proved it is not committed to being a competitive school. Blake James and below need to be fired. Manny Golden is so incompetent, he is now a BABYSITTER and doing part of the job of a man making >$1M. We have a patchwork two bit D staff that has NOBODY that has proven to be able to recruit and develop LBs. We take a DL coach that has already bailed on us after one year...think it’s his dream job...lol. Nobody that can team one player in the roster to cleanly field a punt. This program is in a super sad state. I will not buy a **** thing that goes towards this program. Manny Golden and Blake Dnofrio here we are again. Fly the. Banners!!! Put up the billboards.
