We were just told same thing was happening on the staff this year. Seems Manny is struggling with his own growth/learning.One other thing to consider- when Manny got fired at Texas, there was a lot of talk about defensive staff in-fighting and struggles over control.
My guess is that experience influenced Manny's decision here.
Manny's a fool. You can't be two things. Being a top HC isn't an easy job to do, and now he takes time away from those responsibilities. So he'll call plays...so what, his buddy can't run the defense, and he's a flat out lousy LB coach. Bye, bye Manny
Yes, and 6 with the defenseI don't want to hear any excuses if we lose big to Alabama.
I don't want to hear **** about "oh it's Alabama bro, we knew we didn't have a chance bro..."
Manny has done absolutely nothing to improve the team this offseason. Blake is STILL THE DC. So what if Manny is taking over playcalling? That's only one small part of what a DC does, and it's only one of many issues our defense had.
And that's the point. NOW is the time to get better from last year. We have our opportunity now to get better. And all Manny is showing is that he's happy with where we're at. Hence why no changes.
So when we lose to Alabama, I don't want to hear it. He's had 3 years at that point to build this thing.
You hit the nail on the head in your linebacker part dmoney. No new eyes means McLeod/Jennings or whatever other upperclassmen scrubs will be rolled out there to start next year and will get run on like live a siv trying to hold water. Only bright spot is green horn manure and ticket salesman James will be escorted off property for good....he can't keep the "Hire a DC" card in his pocket for next year. He has to get it done. Hopefully, that's been made clear to him.
I'm surprised by the move. I always viewed Manny as a political/media type. This is a decision with bad optics. We all remember the Coach D fiasco. The political move would have been to fire Baker, hire a DC and shift the blame. He's putting it on himself.
The good news is that Manny's defenses were strong. His last defense as DC finished 3rd in yards per play, 1st in third down defense and 1st in pass defense. His recent resume is objectively better than any DC available. The bad news is that Blake was running Manny's defense last year. Is Manny that much better as a playcaller, or are there deeper issues?
I like the Jess Simpson hire. He was the DL coach on the '18 defense, which finished 1st in P5 in sack rate and was our best in a decade. Everything I've heard internally is that he was a superstar. DVD is fine as long as TRob is the man. I suspect he is and that he's on board with this plan.
The LBs are going to be the key. That position doomed us last year with Manny's recruits. We didn't get a fresh set of eyes there. What is going to change?
All told, this is a pivotal year for Manny. Will he go down like Golden or save his own career? He just cranked the pressure to 11.
Well then enlighten us, what’s the reason? Could it be Diaz has no connections because he’s never number one been a head coach or number two even played the **** game? That’d be my guess, oh and most likely a lack of respect in the coaching industry for the two reasons I listed. There's a reason, and I guarantee it's not because Diaz thinks these are the best coaches on earth.
Win/win situation imo. 9 wins is a win. 7 wins then Manny/James is gone is also a win.
Was waiting for someone to bring up Jimbo. The famous James Coley who cut his teeth as Jimbos “gameplan/strategy” guy while at FSU did this very job that Baker is doing..(and Coley was the Co-OC too in title) He obviously was a horrible playcaller as OC and we found that out the hard way. So maybe this can work. Baker helps with the gameplan and scouting during the week and come gameday hands the reigns to Manny. This can work. Even though it’s not ideal it’s not impossible.jimbo fisher calls his plays and he’s a top
HC, same with Chip Kelly. Gary Patterson use to the call the plays for his defense ( I don’t know if he still does) I can list even more from the NFL HC ranks.
now I will say that you don’t see it much on the defensive side of the ball. But it has worked for some.
