DAILY DEBATE: What did you see from Markel Bell at LT?

Doesn’t look like he should be on the field against ACC competition this year. Not ready to go. I know nothing about developing OL so who knows what they’ll turn him into. I’m a believer but let’s be real he struggled against FAMU

Idk but imo ward took too many hits vs FAMU honestly so get me rivers back asap

Do your research facts on what was being said can’t be wrong
Take your own advice lol. Sewell was in zero circumstances viewed as a Guard prospect unless some draft analyst was saying he COULD PLAY Guard lol. He definitely was NOT viewed as a only a RT prospect, and definitely not a guard lol. Literally he was viewed as one of the top OT prospects to come out in a while, and after he was drafted there were a lot of questions if he'd be LT and they would move Decker to RT lol. They didn't do that because of the reasons I have stated. You're 1000% wrong in your Sewell remarks and won't be able to find any evidence to support your statements. Dude was being comped to like Trent Williams, but sure, he was viewed strictly as a RT or Guard... smh

The front of your body is pointed to the right until you make the throw and you obviously never played football and had on pads and a helmet
"Pointed to the right" can be anything from Left shoulder at the Left corner of the endzone or even greater angle to Left shoulder at the right corner of the endzone. You're "pointed" as in (shoulders and feet) in the general direction you're potentially going to throw. You don't have your chest pointed to the right sideline until you decide to throw left lol. Regardless you see where youre eyes are looking, not where your hips/chest/etc is. You peripheral vision is like 80 degrees from center....

No im not wrong. I didnt say the lions. I said nfl. It’s a fact when Sewell came out nobody felt he was a LT. They labeled him as a RT or guard. It had nothing to do with sorry áss Taylor decker. They said the same about him coming out of hs but Mario and Mirabal put him at LT
Sewell actually played Left tackle while Decker was out injured. They simply put their 2 best tackles out on the field. There are very few absolutes in football. Some guys just play better on 1 side vs the other. Sometimes they play a side based on the teams decision.

Not all of the changes worked well, but one definitely paid off. Moving Penei Sewell from left tackle to right tackle once regular left tackle Taylor Decker was healthy proved to be a fantastic decision.

Even though Sewell had played left tackle in college at Oregon, his power-based game and lack of ideal length translated better to the NFL as a right tackle. Sewell struggled some in his eight games at left tackle while filling in for Decker, especially in pass protection. But on the right side, Sewell quickly proved to be among the NFL’s best right away. The Pro Football Focus grade splits from the left to the right highlights the discrepancy.

I agree. He's got talent no doubt about it but some players cant make the jump from Juco to P5. He will(hopefully) get better because Mirabal is one of the best in the business.

Fully disagree. The "taditionally" part that you began that sentence with is why it's wrong. Sure traditionally that is the case. Traditionally doesn't apply today. Today, DEs move around a lot more - especially following the offensive strength/TE. So unless we are an offense that for some reason is putting the TE on the Right 60% of the time, there will basically be no difference. And defenses should absolutely be smart enough to move a DE around to create best matchups. Also I'd bet almost every top EDGE in the country/NFL would be listed primarily as a LE, not RE, which would match them up against the RT.

The two largest OT contracts in the NFL right now are Tristan Wirfs and Penei Sewell, both of whom are/were RTs (Wirfs played his first 4 years at RT, then switched to LT last year). And pretty sure the reason they switched Wirfs to LT was they lost their LT to FA, and they had Luke Goedeke in line to become starter - and he was also a RT. And he had moved from TE to RT at Central Michigan, and that's all he's ever played. So I don't even think Wirfs moving was for the "traditional" reason either, I think it was literally because they trusted him being able to play both more than Goedeke.

The only reason to be swapping LT/RT is for what the actual player is more comfortable with especially since they usually play one side like their entire college career and to get the best 5 on the field.
Sounds good.

I can't say if he was stiff or not - I wasn't looking that closely at his man-region.

What I can say though, is he looked exactly like what you'd expect a 6'9" JUCO transfer OT to look like. Kinda clumsy with heavy feet and a high center of gravity. Those things can be corrected if he puts in the work. You can't coach size, but you can certainly get this guy doing 100 yard duck walks and rope foot drills all off season. If he can learn to sink his *** in pass protection and get his feet more nimble, he can be elite. Again, you can't coach 6'9" and 340.

He was stiff and he didn’t sit down enough. He’s tall, so that’s important. He’s also still learning and didn’t know who to block on some of the blitzes and twists but that’s teachable. I think he will struggle with speed rushers
Tbh this was all as advertised too. I think we had some fans in a rush to put people on the field because they were panicking but everyone that has been around Bell said it would take him some time

Looks like he was on schedule. Absolutely massive human being and with Mario and Mirabal by next year…might have a beast on their hands
