DAILY DEBATE: What did you see from Markel Bell at LT?

Whats the difference from LT?
The difference is that the LT protects the QBs “blindside” (if he’s a right handed passer…. all of the time) most of the time, Therefore, he needs to be more of an athlete because of all the genetic freaks that he’s gotta try to keep from killing his QB.

Traditionally the RT doesn't face the twitchy speed rushers as much as the LT does. The RT faces bigger stronger type DEs. The LT also protects the QBs blindside(unless QB is a lefty) and is considered the most important and most difficult position to play on the OL. LTs are also paid the most generally speaking.

I think both are equally important, if you are the weak link on the oline teams will line their best pass rusher against you.

I get the blindside thing tho but the same issues can be presented if the RT is weak.

Look at the Florida game…Baron literally blew up the game in the 2nd half and killed their qb because their RT was the worst player on the field.

Bell has a lot of potential and developing to do. Fortunately, he practices against a lot of great players. He may not be the next Bryant McKinney, but give him time with this coaching staff. I do hope Dawson accounts for Bell’s limitations should Bell have to meaningful minutes in meaningful games. We absolutely cannot have Cam hurt.

He looked pretty **** stiff to me.

Doesn’t look like he should be on the field against ACC competition this year. Not ready to go. I know nothing about developing OL so who knows what they’ll turn him into. I’m a believer but let’s be real he struggled against FAMU
He struggled against a group of future doctors, lawyers, and CDL drivers at FAMU

What does this mean? Not trying to be a jerk, just curious how it being FAMU matters?
He looked good overall because he's playing FCS level players.

He's a big guy. Still needs to work on that technique. But he's getting the best OL coaching in America...he'll be fine and good. I'm a believer. The FAMU game won't be the one where I bump my posts that say he should have started this year.

I played OT back in highschool, bell looks more like a right tackle in terms of his feet. I think We should swap Mauigoa to left tackle next year. IMO rt is a little easier to play than left tackle
Think that’s the hope that at some point that LT job is either Mauigoa or Samsons

I didn’t see P4 level starter on a national championship caliber team.

Maybe RT. Honestly guard but he is too **** tall to be a guard?

A little slow footed

Fully disagree. The "taditionally" part that you began that sentence with is why it's wrong. Sure traditionally that is the case. Traditionally doesn't apply today. Today, DEs move around a lot more - especially following the offensive strength/TE. So unless we are an offense that for some reason is putting the TE on the Right 60% of the time, there will basically be no difference. And defenses should absolutely be smart enough to move a DE around to create best matchups. Also I'd bet almost every top EDGE in the country/NFL would be listed primarily as a LE, not RE, which would match them up against the RT.

The two largest OT contracts in the NFL right now are Tristan Wirfs and Penei Sewell, both of whom are/were RTs (Wirfs played his first 4 years at RT, then switched to LT last year). And pretty sure the reason they switched Wirfs to LT was they lost their LT to FA, and they had Luke Goedeke in line to become starter - and he was also a RT. And he had moved from TE to RT at Central Michigan, and that's all he's ever played. So I don't even think Wirfs moving was for the "traditional" reason either, I think it was literally because they trusted him being able to play both more than Goedeke.

The only reason to be swapping LT/RT is for what the actual player is more comfortable with especially since they usually play one side like their entire college career and to get the best 5 on the field.
Very interesting and informative. I knew I was really over generalizing and that the game has evolved but I was trying to be as basic as possible. You really get into the details here and like I said your post is extremely informative.

However, despite the excellent explanation of why the game is different and all the details you touched on, the reason I started my post with "Traditionally" is because I wanted to start with the background historical perspective as to why the two have been different. Regardless, I'm sure many will learn a great deal from your post.

Seems like he gets at least 1 costly penalty every game but he looked much improved week over week.
