Coaching search update

Here's the kicker, though.... If the administration hires someone the fans hate, and that person fails, then what? You think the fans are mad now, they will be completely indifferent in 4 years when we are completely irrelevant. If they want butts in seats next year, they make a big hire. One that pleases the fans immensely. We'll give Butch a chance to fail, he's earned that for what he built last time, but this Cane fan will have a hard time giving a crap about anything UM football related if they hire someone like Mario. If they go cheap this time, so do I.
Some disappointing names in this coaching search. I'm not happy to hear names likes Cristobal and Strong towards the top of the list.

D Money - you still holding out any realistic hope of guys like Hue Jackson or Tom Herman? Do you think this administration will even inquire about a guy like Chip Kelly if the Eagles tank down the stretch and he gets fired? I know there will be a major bidding war for him but do you get the sense they'd even get involved?

I just have zero faith in this administration making a solid hire. Just for the record you're correct about Strong and Butch being similar coaches...that's probably why I'm not as high on Butch as 99% of the posters on this site. People around here have major selective amnesia and forget how bad a gameday coach he is/was.

Give me an offensive mind. Save money on having to hire an OC and pair him with a solid, well paid DC. To me...that's the formula we need to follow to maximize the talent we're privy to on a yearly basis down here.
This.

I'm glad our floor will be Butch or Strong cause thats a much better floor than last time. But IMO thats what Butch and Strong should be, fall back options. I know most love Butch, but I think most of the fans have whipped themselves into a frenzy over memories of greatness. I think there are better options out there that we can and should explore.

Call Chip Kelly, call Gundy from OSU. Call Pinkel. Wait for the season to play out and if TCU gets left out of the playoffs call Patterson and see if getting left out would be enough to get him to bite.

If money is not an issue or at least not as much of an issue as it has been in previous years, then lets call some of these other coaches. If the list settles on Butch, Strong, Chud, Mario I would be extremely disappointed.

I've been riding shotgun on the Butch bandwagon for 2 years. But now, the more I think about it, the less certain I am about the Butch hire.

I was around back during the Butch days. I remember the chaos on the sidelines, the clock mismanagement, Butch's ultra conservative nature, the losses to less talented teams. People say he's better now, he's fixed those problems. What evidence is there of that? UNC was the last time he coached and I'm fairly certain he exhibited a lot of these same negatives there.

Yes he can recruit but what does he do with those recruits? That 2009 UNC team had a lot of talent yet went 8-5, 4-4 in the acc. They lost 24-7 to GT and 16-3 to UVA. Butch couldn't manage better than tied for third in the acc during his UNC tenure. The only time he's had a 10 win season is when he had arguably one of the most talented college squads of all time. Yes he gets credit for putting that together but how replicable is that? Who knows. And can he win big without an insurmountable talent advantage?

Of all of the above, I think my biggest problem with Butch might be his extreme conservative nature. We're talking about a guy who punts from the opponents 40. Who takes a knee and runs out the clock when there is 1 min left before the half. A guy who will sit on the ball and play defense when he's up by 10 at the beginning of the 4th.

I'm kind of tired of these conservative coaches. Coker...conservative. Shannon....conservative. Golden....ultra conservative. I'm ready for a ball busting, run up the score, don't give a *** risk taking coach. From everything I can tell, that guy is Tom Herman. The best part about Herman is that we don't have to speculate on coordinators and how good they'll be. He's an offensive guru and he'd bring Todd Orlando who is a badass dc with the resume and results to back it up. OC and DC...check and check. Sure there's some risk since he's only coached 8 games or whatever, but there's risk with all these candidates, even Butch as outlined above. All that being said, I'd still be thrilled with Butch. I'm just not convinced he's the best candidate out there.

LMAO. Its funny how now that Butch actually seems like it may be a realistic possibility, people are starting to get cold feet and panic and the reality is starting to set back in. For the record, I agree with most of this post. Ive said many times I think Butch is probably our best bet, but I do have some serious concerns as I remember a lot of the issues during his stint both here and UNC as HC. He's not the miracle worker cant miss hire panacea many people are making him out to be.

I could definitely get down with someone like Herman. Ive also been intrigued by someone like Pagano.

I would be more than ok with us hiring Butch, I just hope we have the money to hire a top notch staff. Im under no delusions that Butch is just going to walk in here and kill it like some people are. Just think its funny that the old "be careful what you wish for" thing seems to be getting closer. People couldn't wait for Butch when it was a long shot, now that it seems possible, people are starting to remember the reality and look at this thing realistically and getting nervous.

That said I pretty much co sign this post.

i think a lot of the butch "issues" can be fixed with "out-talenting" people and strong coordinator hires. Butch is a proven commodity when it comes to putting together talent, and getting a nasty defense on the field. That alone would have had us in much better shape the last few years.

Conservative defensive coaches are the worst hires in today's game.

What would you consider Nick Saban and Mark D'Antonio?

And while we're at it, how "modern" is Jim Harbaugh's offensive philosophy?

Man... you and your logic.

Don't you know that logic has no value on this site. It's not like your talking to rational people.

If Chip Kelly got fired after the Dallas game people on this site would be scared to death he would become a candidate over Butch.

I can imagine Texas fans are hoping we take Strong like we were hoping pedophilea took El Foldo. I have 2 criteria for good coaches. They never get blown out, unless its like when the team is decimated by sanctions, ala Miami under Butch. By blown out I mean wiped out. 28 pts plus. That's a red flag against Strong.
The second thing is have they beaten any really good teams. He has. So I don't think it would be the worst hire but I think we would he average mostly with a chance to be good once in a while. Not great. Butch is the man, if not its Herman for me. No other retreads other than Butch. U can't overlook knowledge of what needs to be done. He knows.

Herman may reenergize the entire program. He got a brash attitude which may serve us well.

Great post Mr. Ferguson, very well said. I am for Butch because I am afraid of the admin ******** up an alternative.

Charlie strong is most likely not comfortable recruiting in Texas. You would have to think that if Charlie wanted to fill the team up with south Florida kids Texas fans and boosters wouldn't stand for it

This excuse is ridiculous. Texas is loaded with good football players. Good coaches win games no matter where they are. Urban is a Midwest guy, coached at Bowling Green and Utah, he crushed at UF.

Some guys aren't cut out for the big leagues, Strong is one of them.
Yes that excuse doesn't cut it. Texas have more money to bag whomever they want. They are it in Texas as well and they have a huge talent pool to choose from with less competition than in Florida. Plus he could recruit kids from other states like Louisiana and Florida.

It is funny. Pretty much basic human nature. "Buyer's remorse".

That being said, I'm ready to sign up for Butch. This program needs a jolt in the arm and he's the guy to do it.

If they hire Mario or Chud or Schiano sure the fanbase will lose interest cause it would be deemed a lazy hire.

But if we actually conduct a real search and get say gundy or pinkel or Fuente or Herman, I think people will be excited. Those are coaches that I believe will hit the ground running and run this program around in one year. Everyone will be patient with Butch and he deserves that patience but there are other options that are not named Butch that would have the fans and the college football world buzzing if we were to hire them.

That's what I hope people realize.

Butch is a strategy to out-talent people, which is something Miami can do.

He is not a genius coach. But he will keep it simple and that seemed to be one of Golden's main problem's.

Strong will provide the same thing. Put him in SFL and let him recruit under our banner and he would out talent people. He would not get the same BS he is getting in Texas. High school coaches and parents do and would love him down here.

Both of these guys would put very good defenses on the field and the O would be driven by the Coordinator hire.

Strong is an interesting one. He doesn't have a buyout but I'm sure he has a lot of dough coming to him if he gets canned. But, if he quits right after the season to take a huge paycut and have to dole out cash to his assistants, that's a risky move. He's in a pickle - if he wins a few more games and looks somewhat decent, maybe they give him one more year and not fire him (I don't think he'd quit in this scenario). Or, his team can continue to struggle the rest of the year and then he has to WAIT to get fired. Tough spot.

Didn't mean to down vote... Sorry about that.

Key thing people need to remember Butch will develop players. Particularly in the trenches. We will have some bad *** DL. And once that start, it becomes a chain reaction in the draft. Recruiting solved. I'm a Butch guy but if its not him we need a new guy and I feel its Herman. Also n NFL coordinator who is aggressive.

If we hired Gundy I would be very happy. I just don't want a lazy hire this time around.

Just hire the right guy. I would love to finally be the school that hires the next urban meyer, chip kelly, or Jimmy johnson. I don't care if he leaves after 5 or 6 years to the nfl or something. Miami keeps recruiting decently with mediocre to bad teams. If we start winning those recruits we were close on will come to miami. That said, I'm not opposed to butch or strong. I think they each have good qualities. But I want this next guy to come here showing the same attitude we like our miami players having.

This is a 3 step process for the folks making the hire.

1) Make your pitch to try and pull an elite, established coach like Chip, Dantonio, Patterson, etc. If they say no, move to number 2.

2) Interview high potential coaches like Herman, Fuente, etc. If they have no interest or you don't feel they can win championships here, move to number 3.

3) Hire Butch

This is the most logical path forward. Except you have to have Strong in there somewhere. I think at this point I would put Herman, Fuente Strong and Butch at #2 .

My only issue with Herman and Fuente is they would not draw the splash in SFL like some of these other guys would. They could easily be touted as another small conference guy who doesn't get Miami and could have things working against their success here. I also think that one of those guys will get the Texas job if Strong moves on. They are a better fit for Texas than UM. If one of those teams gets in the playoffs then I think they should shoot up the list.

I would love to see the next coach jet for the NFL after 5 years. That means we are back.

Also can you name the last coach at UM who was here for more than 6 yrs?
