Coaching search update

All excuses that have nothing to do with losing to teams like Iowa State and being ranked in the 100's in both offense and defense.

The guy in your avatar lost to some horrible teams. He also made many of the same mistakes Strong made, particularly in terms of picking coordinators.

Butch and Strong to me are very similar candidates. I prefer Butch because I have more faith that he will build a great staff, but they have the same strengths and weaknesses.
Indeed. I've started to back away from Butch a little bit. There are a lot of legitimate concerns with what you just mentioned, and with his ability to field a good offense.

I will point out though, Butch only had 1 losing season sandwiched into 8/9 win seasons (thanks to losing 30 scholarships). Strong is about to have back to back losing seasons with no sanctions at TEXAS. Was Texas such a bad situation that it rivaled the NCAA cluster**** that Butch had to navigate through?

Franchise- what scenario would you be satisfied with UM hiring Butch?

If Herman takes a job elsewhere after the season and the remaining candidates are the "Miami guys" and strong?

I'm trying to figure out your end game because there are no big names out there ie Urban to OSU.

Hiring Butch wouldn't exactly be settling, even with all of the concerns about his time at UNC noted

But I would hire Herman, Pagano, and obviously Chip Kelly ahead of Butch right now.

Let me get this straight. Charlie Strong's success at Louisville "doesn't mean ****" because he had a great quarterback in a bad conference. But Herman is your top guy for winning with a great quarterback in a bad conference. Got it.

That's not a knock on Herman. He is one of my top choices. But it's becoming clear to me that your dislike for Strong goes beyond football.

i won't get into any of the stuff outside of football, but Teddy kind of fell into his lap... has charlie strong recruited a good QB outside of Teddy? Mind you if randy were still here at that point, Teddy would have been a cane.. I like strong on the defensive side, just like i did randy, but strong hasn't done anything, outside of get lucky with bridgewater, to instill confidence in him as an HC..

and yes golden was able to bring in Kaaya, and we're still in the dumps.. but at least he was able to bring in a good QB (or 2, allison), which is probably the most important position in the game.
Not that it changes your overall point but the part in bold is revisionist history. Bridgewater was already planning on de-committing before Randy got fired.

well if that's the case, then that changes it slightly, what i understood is that Teddy wanted to be here until Randy got ****canned.

Strong is following the same downward career spiral as Muschamp and Chizik.

Muschamp went 11-1 and fell off the cliff.

Chizik won a national title and fell off the cliff.

For whatever reason, the young defensive coordinators make bad head coaches.

We have no idea who is interested because lots of weird **** happens behind the scenes with agents making secret contact. So I'm not going to limit the search to Davis or the putrifaction of Dud/Beanerdict/MonkeyBoy.

We had no idea Hugh Jackson was reaching out to UM last year until someone told us. So we have no idea if a real power move could get us a great candidate like Chip Kelly. I doubt too many Bama fans were clued in on Saban's interest until the end.

We have Peter the Great telling us every little inside scoop before Hecht even thinks about making them.

Yep. I still want Butch for reasons we have discussed repeatedly, but at this point I'm keeping a more open mind.

Once Chizik lost Malzahn it was curtains.

Conservative defensive coaches are the worst hires in today's game.

That is why some have concern even with Butch. Strong is an extreme poor version of Butch

What would you consider Nick Saban and Mark D'Antonio?

And while we're at it, how "modern" is Jim Harbaugh's offensive philosophy?

This. Let's also not confuse conservative scheme with conservative philosophy. You can run a base 4-3 Tampa 2 and be aggressive. You can run a hybrid 3-4 kitchen-sink defense and get run out of the stadium every week (ahem.) ****, D'Nofrio's defense is "innovative", it's "multiple", it's **** hard to implement and it sucks donkey balls the way we run it.

Some disappointing names in this coaching search. I'm not happy to hear names likes Cristobal and Strong towards the top of the list.

D Money - you still holding out any realistic hope of guys like Hue Jackson or Tom Herman? Do you think this administration will even inquire about a guy like Chip Kelly if the Eagles tank down the stretch and he gets fired? I know there will be a major bidding war for him but do you get the sense they'd even get involved?

I just have zero faith in this administration making a solid hire. Just for the record you're correct about Strong and Butch being similar coaches...that's probably why I'm not as high on Butch as 99% of the posters on this site. People around here have major selective amnesia and forget how bad a gameday coach he is/was.

Give me an offensive mind. Save money on having to hire an OC and pair him with a solid, well paid DC. To me...that's the formula we need to follow to maximize the talent we're privy to on a yearly basis down here.

This.

I'm glad our floor will be Butch or Strong cause thats a much better floor than last time. But IMO thats what Butch and Strong should be, fall back options. I know most love Butch, but I think most of the fans have whipped themselves into a frenzy over memories of greatness. I think there are better options out there that we can and should explore.

Call Chip Kelly, call Gundy from OSU. Call Pinkel. Wait for the season to play out and if TCU gets left out of the playoffs call Patterson and see if getting left out would be enough to get him to bite.

If money is not an issue or at least not as much of an issue as it has been in previous years, then lets call some of these other coaches. If the list settles on Butch, Strong, Chud, Mario I would be extremely disappointed.

I have had Butch a little down on my list from the beginning, but dammit there's no doubt he would still be a "good" hire. Certainly much better than many others.

I know you know this already but it's hard not to set the bar low when it comes to hiring our next coach. History says it doesn't care about the rhetoric being banded about right now concerning money.

Butch gets bonus points over guys like Herman and Fuente for me because I think he would work for much cheaper and free up more money for a lights out staff, which is where Butch needs help. If you get some great X and O guys with him because his salary dictates it over a bidding war for say, Herman, then I think he becomes a more comfortable choice for us.

Im still just not buying this blank check crap that some people are pumping out.

I've been riding shotgun on the Butch bandwagon for 2 years. But now, the more I think about it, the less certain I am about the Butch hire.

I was around back during the Butch days. I remember the chaos on the sidelines, the clock mismanagement, Butch's ultra conservative nature, the losses to less talented teams. People say he's better now, he's fixed those problems. What evidence is there of that? UNC was the last time he coached and I'm fairly certain he exhibited a lot of these same negatives there.

Yes he can recruit but what does he do with those recruits? That 2009 UNC team had a lot of talent yet went 8-5, 4-4 in the acc. They lost 24-7 to GT and 16-3 to UVA. Butch couldn't manage better than tied for third in the acc during his UNC tenure. The only time he's had a 10 win season is when he had arguably one of the most talented college squads of all time. Yes he gets credit for putting that together but how replicable is that? Who knows. And can he win big without an insurmountable talent advantage?

Of all of the above, I think my biggest problem with Butch might be his extreme conservative nature. We're talking about a guy who punts from the opponents 40. Who takes a knee and runs out the clock when there is 1 min left before the half. A guy who will sit on the ball and play defense when he's up by 10 at the beginning of the 4th.

I'm kind of tired of these conservative coaches. Coker...conservative. Shannon....conservative. Golden....ultra conservative. I'm ready for a ball busting, run up the score, don't give a *** risk taking coach. From everything I can tell, that guy is Tom Herman. The best part about Herman is that we don't have to speculate on coordinators and how good they'll be. He's an offensive guru and he'd bring Todd Orlando who is a badass dc with the resume and results to back it up. OC and DC...check and check. Sure there's some risk since he's only coached 8 games or whatever, but there's risk with all these candidates, even Butch as outlined above. All that being said, I'd still be thrilled with Butch. I'm just not convinced he's the best candidate out there.

I would be higher on Butch if this scenario plays out or is hinted that this scenario would play out. Great assistants with Butch recruiting would be a lethal combination and one I would be very happy about. Just don't know if that would actually play out since he may decide thats not the direction he wants to go.

I'm starting to feel the same way. I'd be happy with Butch, but Herman is now at the top of my list.

There is no way I would hire Strong as a HC with Butch available.

Butch is the floor, Strong is garbage. Why put them on the same page?
