5 star DT Lamont Gaillard

****. Sounds like a pooch was definitely screwed here.

If I were AG, I'd have whoever's head on a platter, on my desk, as an example.

Especially if that whoever were Unkle.

Yes I'm fortunate enough to coach these kids and thanks for the compliment

Well, there was no explanation given, but I'll be honest, I was just happy they came by.

Harold Landry is an athlete. He's worked out at different combines as a linebacker, defensive end and beleive it or not, receiver. He's the best receiver I've had the pleasure of coaching and it's not even close. NC State has offered him as an H-Back. Miami is in love with the idea of how rangy he is.

The depth chart situation is huge for them both. To be honest though, every school sales a pitch about early playing time and they all make up some story about early entrees in next years draft. The kids are doing their research and will find the situation that best fits each of them.

I don't want to post too much more though. I really just wanted to end all that crap about UIF. We appreciate all the kind words from you guys as we strive to get ready for our season. Thanks and no matter what Go CANES

Thanks for the info emjay. If you're able, please check in periodically to let us know if anything major happens in these kid's recruitment. An update after their visit in June would be especially appreciated. Take care and good luck this season.

Thanks for bringing info Emjay.

I actually like Landry's tape a little more to be honest and would love to steal him from effing Boston College.

As for the depth chart thing, I know everyone is going to tell them both they have an opp to play right away, but when it comes to us just slide them the paper copy of the depth chart and walk out of the room...should take care of the "where can I play right away" argument, especially for Gaillard.

Landry just got offered by Ole Miss
Lamont by LSU

So LSU, for instance, has a much more stacked depth chart at DT and took even long than us to offer...so is he just as mad at them? Honest question, because I legitimately do not understand the mindset of some of these kids.

I hope depth chart is a big factor because our depth chart is pretty thin at DT.

Haha he's not mad at Miami! He's in love with Richt! There's a difference. That guys a genuine, cool guy. That's what I meant about ground needing to be made up!

We screwed around on these two, if you read Emjay's posts for weeks over on Grassy. The guy was totally frustrated trying to get some attention from UM staff over these two. It was equally frustrating reading the posts, so much so that I thought of calling down to the football office and trying to rouse somebody. I used to talk to staff down there, but it was more than 20 years ago. I don't know anybody there now, although I used to know Kehoe. I figured they evaluated the two kids and decided it was not worth their time. There is something that Al has got to fix. I hope it's not too late.

I don't follow, are you saying that we're late because we offered someone during the spring evaluation period (i.e. when the majority of offers go out)?

Absolutely not. I didn't say anything about the spring evaluation period. All I'm saying is, this guy Emjay, who claims to be a coach at Fayetteville Pine Forest, where Gaillaird and Landry play, was trying to get UM interested in these two. He was posting on Grassy (Scout) for weeks and weeks. He said that nobody at UM returned his calls, nobody responded to the videos he sent down (I don't know if he sent video files by email or DVDs), etc. He called a bunch of names in the football department, left messages and voicemails, and nobody responded. Then, a couple of weeks ago, UM offered another kid at DT in the same area of North Carolina. Emjay then posted on Grassy saying it was nice to see the offer, the kid they offered was also very good, just wished that UM showed interest in his two (Gaillaird and Landry). He felt his two were also worthy of consideration. He said he was a huge UM fan and the two kids were also very interested in UM. He also said that all the top schools had been coming by, Alabama, Clemson, UF, and others. Perhaps Gailliaird got more of the attention but both were receiving attention. But still, nothing from UM. Emjay was totally frustrated. I was totally frustrated because, if this kid was as good as Emjay said he was, and was receiving all the big school attemtion, I couldn't understand why UM didn't also show interest. I began to think that either of two scenarios was true: (1) UM had looked at the video, and decided the kids werent' all that good, or (2) Emjay was a troll. All of a sudden, Emjay says the coach of the other good NC kid, who did get the offer, told UM about Gaillaird and Landy. Then UM decided to pay a visit. Emjay then posted on Grassy that he was ecstatic that UM now decided to visit the school. He said that, by now, with being ignored for so long by UM, and with so many other schools showing such intense interest, we now had some ground to make up. Within a few days, the reports came out that UM offered both, so now the question is: why didn't somebody at UM listen and respond to Emjay's voicemails, emails, etc. Why didn't anybody even bother to acknowledge them? It would have been the polite and smart thing to do.

What this looks like, is gross incompetence on the part of the staff down at UM--whether it was a secretary, an administrative assistant, an assistant coach, a recruiting coordinator, or whomever--it really looks very bad.

Some years ago somebody on Grassy told me about a QB in Illinois who was very interested in UM. I told a friend, he told the recruiting office (where my friend was then well-known, having volunteered there for years) and within a week, UM had requested film. Turned out the kid was not UM material, and ended up at, I think, the other Miami, of Ohio. Still, the staff was efficient and pro-active. You've got to wonder what's going on there now, with a glaring need at DT and a purportedly top prospect dying for our attention and our staff ignores the attempts by the high school coach to get UM interested.

That's the story that I followed for weeks on Grassy.

I'm not entirely sure what the spring evaluation period means---I know that twenty years ago the coaches would go out on visits in May of each year, but if it means what I suspect it means, that it is the time when we should be finding guys like Gaillaird and Landry, and the voicemails and emails or whatever Emjay did should get answered. It just seems unbelievable for what seems like a very intense, efficient and hardworking staff as I suspect Golden's staff is. Of course, we don't know the entire story. Maybe they are looking at so many kids that they are overwhelmed with work and just can't get to everybody fast enough.

One thing I've noticed over the years of following recruiting is that coaches love versatility. They like kids who have natural gifts, like height and good feet (meaning explosion, speed, quickness). You can work with a kid with those gifts and they might project at a number of different positions, e.g., OLB, DE, TE, etc. This is especially true when you are dealing with limited numbers.

Landry seems to bring that to the table. I recall first being made aware of that when Jimmy Johnson had his first or second recruiting class, he recruited a number of kids who were versatile and could project at a number of positions.

I hope depth chart is a big factor because our depth chart is pretty thin at DT.

Thin? Thin would imply there's some talent he'd have to compete against. The cupboard is completely empty at DT except for Pierre. I know its virtually impossible for DTs to play right away as FR but whoever we sign in 2014 will have no option. I just can't understand how the 2013 DTs saw the depth chart and turned down immediate playing time.

I can see the kids digging Richt.

Let Golden hang out with 'em a bit, though. He's a cool dude, too. Especially if he brings out the freshly pressed black tracksuit.

Somebody toss me an Al Golden "deal with it" GIF.

Who's Miami primary recruiter for your players, or has that not really been established yet?

You should let the kids know about Miami; when they see the depth chart at Miami let them know that there are bodies at DT but not an elite talent anywhere. Guillard would get major burn from day 1.

You wrote an essay when your last sentence is likely what happened. For all the talk about how interested they are, we'll see what happens now that nothing is standing in their way of being a Cane.
