Any idea why our DBs looked like they were not even in the same zipcode as their WRs?

Two questions and I apologize in advance for sounding dumb, I played baseball. What I know about football is from watching and trying to learn the basics. But can you explain, first, why it seems like we havent had a QB that hits a guy in stride deep like Howell did yesterday? Seems like all our QBs in recent years hit guys for big plays with a throw behind them (and the corner) and the WR is falling down as he's catching the ball and there are no YAC. Second question is, why does it seem like we can move the ball at will and then its pulling teeth to get in the end zone?. Yet, all of the top offenses seem to be able to fire the ball in to the endzone 20, 30, 40 yards out and hit guys for touchdowns.

No answer for that Lu. Ultimately when I watched back I was happier with what I saw from the offensive standpoint which only made me more upset that we lost. Couple inches come to mind. Jarren tripping up short of a first down by inches, the inches the unc wr scored by in terms of his feet remaining in bounds, and the inches between blake baker's head thinking that was a defense he should call on 4th and 17.
Al Pacino said it best, "it's a game of inches".

Thanks for all you do, subscribed.

Watched "this will help" several times and other things; still would love some elaboration if possible on what "communications mishap in the secondary" Manny was specifically on to when answering a reporter's question about the 4th and 17th...

...is there something about the "bracketing" or such that requires the 2 defenders to clue each other in with voice or hand signals, something like a baseball outfielder yelling "I got it".. TY.

Besides the presser, Manny's comment about 4th and 17th presumably:

No not hand signals or anything like that... just rules of engagement. Microscopically the receiver "stemmed" the route (took a few steps leaned in) to sell a post.. both db's went with it then he broke out. One of them must be pre determined to stay outside and play the line in that situation. Honestly that should have never happened.

Is it an experience thing?

Good questions.

1. One play jarren short changed Harley. His base was falling away from the throw. Baseball player mechanics no different. You drive in the direction with your legs. Just football qbs have shorter strides. So that case it's mechanical. And honestly jarren was really good last night. 30-37 over 300 yards 2 td and 0 picks in second ever start on the road. Deep ball touch will come.

2. Talked about this earlier. Right now I'd pin point one big issue along the goalline. Blitz protection and late walk up shifts. And second execution. Ive seen Harley knocked off his route by Donaldson's own big ***... turf monsters trying guys up. Need to clean it up

Long story short- Is there any debate that we have better players than our opponent? Which can only mean our coaching is worse than our opponents.

Bandy wasn’t the better player when he gifted 7 points. Bubba...well you know the story there. That’s 10 points right there — basically what the handicappers thought.

Thanks for the quick reply. Definitely makes sense. Just want see stabs in to the end zone from 30 yards out be successful. I know its tough to do, but it just seems like for us to score, we have to get down to the 10...then 6, then 3 and finally in the end zone.

13 clips ran together as part of the FTP series. Some take away points from the game as I watched it back

  • Offensive line showed some improvement especially along the right side of the line
  • Jarren Williams was extremely accurate with the ball and showed some improvement to include better understanding of the offense, keeping head up and down field and better pocket discipline
  • Blitz pick ups and "checking" out of certain looks is still an issue at times
  • Procedural much more clean in terms of penalties
  • Jakai Clark has a good feel and often looks to engage secondary contact
  • DJ Scaife was solid at right tackle
  • Defense got burned on a safety rotation when it stayed flat in a zero look
  • 4th and 17 call left a lot to be desired
  • A couple of plays or even inches in Miami's direction and Miami is 1-1 on the season
  • If the special team's play was even remotely special this team would be 2-0

I hope you continue to enjoy the FTP series in its new format. For all those that want to be a student of the game like I am, than hopefully this avenue is cool for you. Please subscribe if you could. Apparently that is the big thing in YouTube world.

Thanks a ton for doing this. It gets real old listening to people go on about whatever single aspect of the game they feel caused the loss. Like most here I basically have a feeling about how the game went, but on a given play I may have only seen part of what was going on. Some of it's camera angles and some is just focusing on the ball. Whatever.

I don't have the patience or knowledge to do it, so I'm glad you do. Cheers.
