@Roman Marciante - a couple questions for you -

1) As you said in this game review, you are not in favor of going to a full on shotgun spread, even with the general trend by many college programs (as well as some NFL teams) to go in that direction. I know many fans want to see us go more in that direction, and I think i do as well, but I also agree that there is some value in being variable in the types of formations we run. I know that the Rams and Saints are two of the models of modern offenses, and watching the Rams tonight you see a ton of under center, play action concepts, along with the shotgun, RPO concepts that are much more popular. Obviously, those 2 coaches are at the top of their profession as offensive coaches, but do you think that in some ways, the offense that Enos is trying to run is in some ways trying to incorporate/mimic some of those concepts. Clearly, our OL limits the effectiveness of those types of plays, but do you think that there is value in sticking with some of it, as plays like Mallory's first catch, and some other under center plays we have run, have shown some success.

1)Yes. He is multiplicitive in approach however he is not incorporating as much spread as I like. I like the pro spread the best. I like NFL passing concepts infused with variants in pace and a premium on space. I don't believe we have even seen any empty gun looks which I think Jarren would be very effective on. (Which most every NFL and college team will employ) And I occasionally would prefer under center because they can be really effective on play action and I agree there as well. I think the guts for this offense is there. Just need a little more makeup.
If you heard Collinsworth at the end of the game, he was saying how the browns offense doesn’t work if Baker holds the ball longer than 2 seconds ** because their tackles are so bad. **

Square peg, round hole. I think I was the first to say it with the Richt offense. Enos is doing the same thing. Get the fcuking ball out quick and help out the OL.

Ro is a multiple guy. I’m a shotgun, wide OL splits, fast-pace guy.

The thing we definitely agree on is that this is not the offense we had hoped for after his year at Alabama.

I’m probably going to be more critical at this point because I don’t like the tight formations trying to run the plays he did at Arkansas and defenses are starting to react.

I’m tempted to ask you what in the world you’re talking about but I’m afraid you’ll tell me...in excruciatingly long detail and I’ll be left where I started if I don’t outright fall asleep reading it.

He's referring to the guy in the red shirt that now holds up an electronic sign showing how long the commercial break is going to be.

Its proof of modern productivity b/c that guy used to just stand on the field making sure the refs held the game up until they came back from commercial but now with the digital countdown clock he shows the crowd (along with his spinning technique to make sure everyone gets a look) I can better gauge my ability to run out to take a **** and get back before the next play.

I thought I was the first and I checked and you were. You said it 6 weeks before me. It’s really true and maddening. I mentioned in another thread that while Mullet loves to run big QB’s, when Franks went down, he used Trask differently to suit his skill sets. This is the flexibility we’ve lacked here for years.

He was right, asking was a mistake.

You know what they say..."if it ain't workin, just keep tryin' it some more!"

150% agree with the last point you make, with our 3 on 2 advantage outside. If this team is going to contend for the Coastal, as currently constructed - it must go shotgun spread and favor quick hitting plays like this. This (1) Gets our skill guys out in space where they may have a talent advantage and at least gives them a chance to make a guy miss and make a big play (2) helps out our struggling offensive line somewhat since the ball's getting out fast, and (3) plays to what is currently the core strength of Jarren Williams' game - those short-medium darts he's been so good at throwing.

This needs to be our main focus on offense. If executed well, we stand a chance at getting the defense off balance at least a bit, at which point we might be able to mix in some effective runs or have time for some deeper routes at the appropriate times. I'm no offensive guru, but that is what I think.

Difference is, those calls weren't bogus. They didn't call back good plays, or let Texas get away with 50 holdings. Huge difference. They let us play.

For sure. Miami earned and owned every single one of those penalties that day.

Some wild **** has gone down if we are pretty much all in agreement that we’re envious of things the mullet is doing. Kill me

Yea, Multiple is probably better under ideal conditions in a system with no practice time constraints and the ability to draft/sign talent that can do everything but the Canes have college practice time constraints (so narrowing focus should improve comfort and execution) , and from year to year can count on having play-making athletes in space a lot more reliably than great OL, so it seems like a perfect fit to run a system that emphasizes the ample supply of fast athletes and minimizes the reliance on big bruising OL (via quick releases and running away from the defense rather than through them).

And realistically, long term on average, I don't think we are gonna have the personnel to line up against Clemson, Bama, etc. in tight formation and pose enough of a run threat to fully unlock the PA stuff. So all the more reason to emphasize, practice, and optimize for what you are probably going to have to do in the big moments against real contenders anyway (Shotgun, Spread, making plays in the passing game to open up the run more so than running to open up the PA, etc.)

Here are some take away points from the video series this week and yesterday's game vs. Central Michigan.

  • Miami offensive line took a step back after improving the past two weeks
  • Struggles on third down continued and in part became worse as Miami is now 128th out of 130th on 3rd down completions
  • Execution is a big culprit on third down inefficacy this week
  • Central Michigan employed a ton of heavy box defenders to combat Miami's 12 set tight formation based sets
  • Miami continues to rely on post snap RPO's but are super successful with them
  • Central Michigan played some tendencies of Miami and their defensive line stunted in anticipation of pulling linemen
  • Way too many negative plays precipitated by the fact of the offensive line play and heavy in the box unaccounted defensive players
  • Officiating was horribly inconsistent. I have not yet once complained about officiating this year but this was bad
  • Miami was successful from some spread and space concepts once again which should be considered when the running game has tough sledding
  • Missed some throws on the field this week. Made some throws this week too.
  • Need to understand as a qb the whole play picture, which should be heightened, down along the goal line.

I don't like how close this one was this week. Ultimately you shouldn't need to "Escape with a win" vs a perceived lesser opponent when you were favored by multiple scores. Once again InSight crew if you could please show your support of this series by also subscribing and liking on YouTube that would be much appreciated. Win or lose (or even win-losing) we got a job to do. #Thanks

Roman I love your breakdowns. I for one am optimistic about this staff and this team and our future. I see the things they have fixed and the ones they are working on that are more difficult to solve with the current players. As many here wish to fire all the coaches and belittle our players, where do you stand in that regard. I believe the closs game Saturday with it being a win was a blessing in making our coaches and players realize there is much work to be done. One simple thing is that Hedley has moved to his right on his delayed kicks and they simply rushed someone outside and got a hand on the ball, simple fix is don’t be repetitious. The Ol is the biggest concern, but instead of your recommendations regarding play calls and solutions, what do you think of Manny, Enos, Barry and the staff. Aren't you encouraged by our play so far compared to under Richt??? I know you may not want to comment but wish you would to quiet the hysteria here since you are respected. THANK YOU

What’s criminal is how UF line is as bout worse as ours but Mullen schemed to disguise it. Enos schemed to expose it. Don’t know if it’s Manny forcing this notion on Enos that this is Miami football to be a pro set offense. But that ish gotta stop. We have the talent for spread but keep forcing pro style set without the talent to do so. Maybe Manny yet has found out how to get more from his coordinators. But again he should be figuring this out at Temple

Manny wants a power run game, that’s what he said on hurricane hotline after unc game. Can rememeber it like yesterday with don bailey on with Diaz gloating about the importance of a fullback and is glad we are using so much of it. Yikes..

Love the break down. I think this was just a bad game. I hated the 4th down play call I was telling my dad that wont work with the bunch set, when they came out with it. Everyone wants to jump off the bridge but if you can remember the 2017 season we were down to Toledo at home 10-16. so i think we can chill out a bit, however if we play like that again with anyone else on our schedule besides FIU we will be destroyed.

The one thing on offense that richt did that I loved was the quick pass to the tight ends when the safety is back. I would like to see Enos in corporate that. Central Michigan had a lot of coverage with that look and one broken tackle would be a big gain. I would love to see more of that and in the red zone a big tight end out wide jump ball.
