What specifically is wrong with our D

Mannys scheme is trash. He 'creates havoc' with blitzes but, because some fundamental elements are missing, he exposes his LBs, which is why safeties are so active in this Defense.

Last year, our emphasis on the DL was to 'get upfield'. Our DL barely engaged and teams used our over-agression against us. This year, Manny's adjustment was to have his DL engage more, but we don't have the pass rush to get pressure without sending somebody, which leaves us vulnerable on the backend.

Without a first round DE, who can literally create pressure completely by themselves, we have to blitz. And, we are soo poor at tackling the if the pass rush doesn't get some, we end up in trouble.

Also, we continue to send players out on the field, though they continually under perform. 44 is an example of this. He gets picked on.

Manny's D has been called gimmicky and that's a perfect way to describe it. We try to 'create havoc' at the expense of our LBs, who routinely have OL up in their chest before having an ability to actually diagnose the play. I honestly think Shaq and Pinckney masked alot of these issues with their natural ability to get off/slip blocks.

I could go on and on with some of the fundamental philosophies of just about every defense that our defense appears to be missing but what's the point. Simply put, Manny knew this year was make or break for him and he, incorrectly, bet on himself. Now, it's up to UM to do the right thing immediately. Why let a lame duck coach continue to infest your program and ruin your kids.... plus recruiting will definitely take a hit. Everybody knows he's not coming back. We're just setting up our future HC up for the tougher start.

Manny’s defense is predicated on havoc. When you have a very disruptive defensive line, it can work well because it creates a lot of negative plays. That’s his whole scheme. Get you behind the chains a couple times in a drive and I can get a stop or a turnover. It’s not bend but don’t break, it’s more I’ll break you once and then hold. He believes that if you’re in 2nd and 13 or 3rd and 9 all day, he’ll win more often than not.

The problem this year is there are no difference makers on the DL, especially on the edges. All of us who talked season outlook all summer probably underestimated the impact the lack of edge pass rush would make. We all said “DE factory” and “if we can somewhat replace Phillips and Roche..”. Well, we haven’t. We’re 68th in sacks and 15th in TFLs. Those numbers are way down from 2016-2018. We were 3rd in the country in TFLs in 2017 and #1 in 2018. We led the country in sacks in 2017. #9 in 2018.

That’s the biggest difference for me. DL and safeties have to be great in this scheme. Nobody is even close to Quan on the back end, and we have no disruptive defensive linemen.

This.

It also doesn't help that LB recruiting has been abysmal for five straight cycles, and we can't seem to tackle now that Manny is running the practices as the head coach.

My biggest problem with the scheme is that it's incomplete. I actually like the "creating havoc" approach, but it needs a few things that Manny does not teach.
1) the havoc needs to be created by the front four. For that to happen, it needs an elite DL that wins one-on-one matchups and keeps the OL off of the LBs.

2) the LBs need to be athletic enough, have the instincts, and be tackling ability to clean up anything the DL misses (which will happen)

3) the secondary needs to be able to cover for 2-3 seconds and eliminate the quick throws. This will allow the DL to create that havoc and force the QB to hurry his decision making.

At present, we lack the talent at DL; we lack the athleticism and instincts on the second level; and we lack the schematic principles in the secondary. Couple that with the lack of tackling fundamentals and the inability to understand angles, you have a massively incomplete scheme. Just my two cents.

Its poorly coached because the defensive coordinator and most of the defensive staff stink as coaches.

The scheme stinks, too, and I've been trying to tell you this for years, but yall look at TFL and our one year getting lucky with a monster turnover margin and think Manny is the goods. He is absolutely not and this is what happens to his defense on the opposite side of the spectrum of the Turnover Chain season.

Can't tackle...charmin soft (watch Zach McCloud get dragged into the endzone by Taulapapa)...just bad football.

Manny's defense looks great vs weak coaches and weak competition. As soon as he has to compete vs competent coaches with talent. Manny literally looks like a fool.

Bottom of the nation in penalties and tackling. G5 talent at LB. Worst pass rush talent of Manny era. Senior safeties are a huge disappointment. And there is an overall lack of back 7 explosiveness and timing which hurts our blitzes.

The scheme is good enough to work with enough talent (‘16-‘19) but we are seeing the results of poor leadership and uneven recruiting.

Everyone of those is "coaching".

Just say we lack talent in key areas and overall on defense. That’s the main reason. With good talent, Manny’s defense works. Don’t know how good it can be with elite talent, he hasn’t had that here. Recruiting misses, mis evaluations, and injuries.

Bad scheme with telegraphed blitzes.....talent in the secondary that isn't Miami caliber. Same goes with linebackers and DL.....this is what I thought would happen when I saw his first full class. I knew in year 3-4 it would hurt him big time.

Manny is running the D... That is what is wrong with it.... The D is broken.... It's broken... Completely broken...

Manny's scheme highlights DEs but neglects everything else. His recruiting, or lack thereof, reflects that. Subpar DTs expose the subpar LBs and forces an undisciplined secondary who are lacking in fundamentals to have to make plays.

Oh, and the position he "highlights" is also subpar this year.

Lack of talent on DL and LB.

Loss alot at End...obviously the worst end group we have seen in the last 5 years. Should of been obvious to all when Mccloud was named a starter.

LB talent is DRY....But most recruiting guys like me saw this coming an harped on it for years. Manny recruited the position atrociously...(when i use to bag on Rumph...i always bagged on lack of lb recruiting as well).

The main positions on his defense are ENDS (to create tfl, sacks, etc) and SAFETY.
Well we have a talent drought at end...and Gurvan Hall is worst than Robert Knowles (i dare someone to say he isnt). Bolden hasnt made any difference maker plays.

* We are small on D and dont tackle well because of this. When is the last time we started two ends that are 6'2 and under 250pds?...When the last time we started 2 lbs that are 5'10-5'11 220 and slow?.

* On a positive note.....a lot of the young guys have shown flashes and look like they belong...from Chantz Williams, Elijah Roberts to Kam Kinchens and James Williams. Leonard Taylor flashed last week as well

* Im still MAD that Manny didnt bring in a portal Lb. That shows how poor of an evaluator of LBS he is. He actually thought that group was good enough. Other than CCSU i personally would take every other teams LBS we have played.

What are the chances his role of DC gets stripped from him? Because we all know he’s here until seasons end

What happens to a boxer who telegraphs his punches?

Our defense telegraphs EVERYTHING.

Offensive coaches have caught on and it “appears” we don’t have the talent to overcome this like in the past. This scheme requires certain types of players and the ball falls out when you don’t have them. The unsound things we do make the guys we do have look worse than they are.

I can tell where the offense is going to go with the ball 90% of the time by pre snap alignment. We leave gaping holes presnap that gives the offense angles to come at us full speed without hesitation. We leave GAPING holes in the defensive line and line the linebackers up AWAY from the offenses’ numbers advantage. The only thing that saves us are the oc or qb missing it and calling a bad play. They are calling bad plays less and less the more tape we put out. We are much, much better when we use basic, balanced alignments but we out think ourselves.

So many of our plays are lost before the ball is snapped it is hard for me to believe our talent is as bad as everyone contends. Combine all that with practices that poorly simulate game conditions and you end up looking really bad on gameday.
