This is sneaky great Transfer Portal Class

It was a good haul, but that misses the key point. The portal should be used to fill holes, and two glaring ones remain—DT, WR1. For the kind of resources UM is pouring into program, staff, roster, it’s disappointing that holes remain that could easily thwart an otherwise playoff-worthy roster. IMO, greater attention to Plan B and C is needed. We're left to hope and pray that losing the two Horton doesn’t come back to burn us.

You know our fans are just looking for a reason to mope when JOSH HORTON, who was struggling just to win a 2nd string spot, is being used as a huge loss and someone that could easily "thwart" a playoff spot.

Meanwhile, David Blay, a top-5 transfer DT who every school wanted, just gets ignored

We have highly rated prospects at both positions. The one thing Mario is supposed to be good at is recruiting, WR1 should already be on the roster

Injury luck was huge. Know what else we did last year? Avoided 3rd downs. We averaged 12 per game, which was top 10 nationally. When we got them? Convert 56% of them, #1 by a lot. We averaged 1.5 Fourth Downs per game and went for it at least 1x per game and converted over 70% of the time. We were able to keep our offense on the field at an astronomical clip. We will regress there this year. Which means more possessions for our defense. We can take it from there. It’s not just that we had a high scoring offense; it was efficient and it kept the ball. Can we hold up to an extra 2 or 3 defensive possessions a game?
Didn't realize this, but we were 8th nationally in TOP.

Clemson has frontline players in key spots but they have their own question marks. 90th in yards per rush against is a big red flag. Miami pushed them around in 2023, with Mauigoa and Bain in particular making highlight reels as true freshmen.

Both teams have new DCs so let’s see how those units progress.
They’re confident it was a DC problem and not personnel on defense.

Depth behind that front line talent is the question mark raised by the people close to their program. I also have no clue what they’ve got at RB to replace Mafah either. Maybe their run game is the down fall for them, but that’s the best starting WR group in the country. Can we out-physical them on both sides of the ball? Maybe. I’ll have to see us generate pressure consistently and I don’t know that Bain/Mesidor can do it. Good players but they’re not pass rush specialists. Gonna take Lightfoot/Lowe taking a huge jump.

I like the class.

Carson Beck is the gem, clearly, as 2025 would be disaster with the returning QB room plus Nickel. I am hoping Nickel takes the QB2 spot and gets sufficient playing time to show if he's the real deal for 2026. I know many prefer starting QBs from the Portal but accomplished players like Ward and Beck may not be there every offseason. Signing elite WRs is difficult enough, let alone when there is a question mark at QB.

Some of the better players have multiple years of eligibility. CBs Lucas and O'Conner, S Poyser, and RB Brown.

The logic may be tough to follow: a great recruiting win in one position can be offset by a weakness in another. We have a top QB but no fast, deep threat who can win contested catches. Hence, WR1 is a hole that Ze would have helped fill. We have a strong lineup of DBs to stop the pass, offset by a shortage of dudes at DT to stop the run. Hence, DT is a hole. Most agree DT should be at least a 4-man rotation. We have 3, including Blay, for whom I'm thankful. IMO, Josh Horton would help this team in a position of need. You disagree, whatever. Also, not sure why thwart was in quotes--it means to prevent from accomplishing something (like beating ND, UF, or making the playoffs).

Who were the top DTs and WR1s Miami missed on?

I understand your point but I don't recall any elite players at those positions.

Tampering not withstanding,

Nothing sneaky about this class.

It is expensive and it is expected beat Notre Dame, Florida, win us an ACC Championship and get us to the playoffs on the back of the quarterback and defensive backfield, which, my guess, would be the most expensive QB and DB room in the nation. The QB is expected to be invited to New York.

Fin.

None of the bull**** from last year should be tolerated an we've matched or overspent to correct last year's mistake through personnel and coaching changes.

Yes I said it, this is an A class and you can argue with your moma if you don’t like it. This is the #3 rated class for a reason. This class address all three phases of the game in a major way. With experienced veterans in positions at WR to raise the floor and support the talented youth at that positions. While adding young talent with multiple years of eligibility to combat the years of poor recruiting at DB. This class also address the lack of explosive playmaker ability in the return game by adding 2024 All-American kick returner Keelan Marion and 2023 2nd team All-SEC punt returner Keionte Scott. While also bolstering the playable depth at every position on this team with the exception of DT. If this staff can somehow add another DT this will be an A+ class. There is a lot of talent in this group now it’s up to these coaches to unlock it.

Way too positive for the sociopaths that infect this site.

Good luck on your journey, OP.

Improved greatly at CB.
Improved a lot at S.
LB is a net neutral.
Less proven talent at DE.
Less proven talent at DT.

OL is a net neutral, but they'll be better.
RB is less talented.
QB is less talented.
WR has less proven talent & production.
TE is less talented.

Major step back at K.

Those aren't your portal grades, it's your 2025 vs 2024 team comparison. I generally agree with you, with a few departures.

Defense: I think you're underselling the improvement at LB and think Bain+Mesidor along with an extremely talented youth movement on the outside will be significantly better than injured Bain/Alston+Baron. I think we have the talent to set the edge, stop the run, cover the flats, and get to the QB across DT/DE. The place we "may" have taken a step back or washed is at DT, we'll just have to see if Blay/Moten/Scott/Jones/Simpson can deliver on the promise @DMoney's staff sources are making.

Offense: Despite the QB, RB and TE concerns, I think the offense is still talented enough to be a Top 10, even Top 5 level offense. Fletcher looks trimmed down and a grown man after finally having a true off-season of S&C. Lyle and he could make us forget about Martinez. Lofton isn't Arroyo, but we didn't know what we had in Arroyo at this time last year, and he may be a dude in his own right. The OL will dominate. Honestly, my biggest concern remains WR, as we a ton of raw talent but no idea if it will turn into a cohesive unit with Beck, especially against top defenses.

If the K loses games like Baxa lost us the UF game in 2019, I'm going to projectile vomit on the TV.

I’m still trying to figure out how this is hilariously short sided when it’s entirely factual.

We did fantastic work on paper to flip the secondary, and a ton of positions on this team have talent, but are unproven. What’s incorrect about that?

Do we not have question marks at WR, LB and DT?
To say something has talent AND thats it's unproven is an oxymoron. It's not real.

Talent isn't theoretical. It has to be proven and demonstrated.

I wouldn't have minded another DT (Stone) and WR (Singleton or Thomas), but I feel like the class is a B+ or A-. Most importantly, Mario has to put it together... There are a lot of new players and coaching pieces that have to gel quickly.
