The Banner is a stupid idea and other thoughts

How many games did it take Pat Haden to fire Lame *****in last year? I'll take that.

All I hear on the recruiting board is "win and we'll get all the guys we want." It should be painfully obvious after that UL game that were not going to win big this year. It'll take a minor miracle at this point to win the lousy Coastal. Losing and playing pu$$y ball is going to be the undoing of this recruiting machine.

On top of all that, I, for one, don't give a fck about accumulating talent if we're just going to waste it on game day anyway. Al has proven he has no idea what to do with the talent he's bringing in. He's getting humiliated by guys from South Florida he didn't even want. Maybe the next coach will get saddled with some guys like Gaines, Burgess, Rogers, etc. and kick some ***.

Lane Kiffin has zero impact on Al Golden not getting fired this week.

So you don't want to accumulate better players for the Miami football team because you think the coach needs to be fired?
You said they'd no way golden will get fired early in the season. Why can USC fire *****in a couple games into his third season, but we can't fire Golden a couple games into his 4th season? Please explain it and don't just tell me it had nothing to do with it.

As for recruits, we're in the best recruiting area in the world. Any competent coach can succeed down here. I'm not worried about the effect a banner or open fan unrest will have on recruiting. I am, however, concerned with the effect getting blown out every time we face a team with a pulse and playing pussified garbage football will have on recruiting.

Lane Kiffin got 5 games before he got fired.
Thank you. It was 5 games into his 3rd season right? It wasn't his 4th season was it?

4th season. Got embarrassed by Arizona State on the road after losing to Washington State at home earlier in the season.

As far a recruiting: an elite, professional coach could win 11 games with the 2nd and 3rd tier South Florida kids. Don't believe me? Ask Charlie Strong. Recruiting is the most overrated aspect of being a coach at Miami. When I refer to recruiting I mean the skill that Al and Coley have: sell the program to kids, be cool to kids, make kids want to play for you. That **** TAKES CARE OF ITSELF if the team wins and puts kids in the NFL.

It's about talent identification, talent development, talent execution, and x's and o's. Butch Davis how low rated classes b/c he understood it wasn't necessary to get the #1 cat at every position from H.S. bc he knew the 3rd and 4th best cat was just as physically gifted and simply needed to be developed. It never ceases to amaze me how Coker, Randy, AND Al haven't figured this out.

Good post D other than the banner comments.

Fans drive the bus. We can sit back and claim that a bunch of stuffed shirts will eventually do the right thing on their own, but that's not how it works in real life.

The stuffed shirts are all about taking the easiest possible path. If the fans sit back and act like all is well waiting for the stuffed shirts to rescue the program they won't do it. The fans will force their hand by raising ****. If some hoity toity folks get embarrassed in the process, then so be it.

It's the timing that makes it look clownish.

If it was the last game of the year, I would find it unseemly (because it's Senior Day) but understandable. Doing it after the first game just gives people an excuse to laugh at us. And, more tangibly, it hurts recruiting and makes the program less appealing to coaching candidates.

Here's where I take issue. While I agree that a banner at an empty FAMU game is pointless, It's NOT the first game of the year that has fans ****ed off. It's Golden's complete body of work; rather lack there of, plus his constant line of bull****. He's lost 5 - 7 games, went AWOL during a crucial recruiting period, puts his friendships over the good of the program, and generally makes the school look bad. You say it will embarrass the higher ups? GOOD! They need to be embarrassed, and they should be embarrassed that under their watch the thing that put UM on the map has become a laughing stock. It's a disgrace.

It doesn't embarrass the higher ups. It embarrasses the program and the players. But I know its for Chad Thomas' own good. Two games into his freshman season to have something like that happen. **** is selfish. It'll make some people feel better for a couple of minutes and thats it. Doesn't mean anything. Golden's on-field failures will get him canned.

Golden isn't getting fired one game into the season, so yes I think it will compound issues and make recruiting more difficult.

No. I said Golden isn't getting fired one game into the season or this week. You are twisting it and asking a different question. Kiffin lasted 5 games. Losing 2 in conference games. If Golden loses to Nebraska and/or Duke, he certainly could get fired, but he isn't getting fired this week. If you were going to fire your coach after one week you would have fired him already.

A banner is not what got the last two coaches fired, so you can fly it now and see nothing happen for at least 3 weeks or you can fly later and continue to think it was the banner that did the coach in.

You have a different opinion on the impact on recruiting than Lu, D$ and others and I happen to disagree with you.

Competent coach like:
- a long time Cane, respected defensive coordinator that knows SFL better than anyone?
- a young coach who built a program at a small school?
- a guy with Miami experience, that was good for about 3 years in the Big East once every team left?
- Ice Harris?
- a coach fans flew a banner for, flamed out in the NFL and was fired from his last ACC job?

The last one is clearly our best choice and our last link to success, but will they hire him?

D, I respectfully disagree about the banners. I also think it's understandable if you don't want the site associate with the banners. But . . . We flew banners in 2006, and Shannon cleaned up in 2008 with an elite recruiting class. We flew banners in 2010, and Golden landed guys like Tracy Howard and Deon Bush in 2012. I think the effect on recruiting is overblown. Secondly, while fans aren't making decisions, there aren't many ways to show just how dissatisfied we are with the direction of this program, and that the results are simply not acceptable. It's the most notable thing a group of fans who aren't big-time boosters will do. I hope that in 30 years I have the juice as a booster to make my input heard at UM, but that's not happening right now. I've withheld HC donations this year, and told them that it was because of Al Golden, but that won't get the nearly the amount of attention that Fire Golden banners will, and the school will be embarrassed--as they should be. All fans can do is make sure that the school knows how much we hate what has been going on, and the banner thing gets attention and sends the message loud and clear. Whether it counts for anything, I doubt, but that's pretty much all we can do as fans.

It embarrasses the team and parents too. It is the first game, and will make the whole program look more like a circus opening the door further for negative recruiting and decommits.

Or we let the season play out and the decision will be clear.

I think the parents are already embarrassed. Look at dukes mom.

A mom frustrated after a miserable loss? Oh my.

Different than having to answer questions about a banner.

You want recruits parents asking current parents about a banner?
She said she was ****ed about a lot of stuff.

Ask the gators how 4-8 recruiting goes. That banner will be all those recruiters need to bring up if the staff is retained. I cant imagine the banner workibg in our favor cant tell anyone what to do but ill say this that banner goes up and al and co. stay put going to be kibda hard to take us serious. Lets not punish ourselves lets not damage our U any further i mean it was the first game and im not saying its going to turn around or that al could make a change im just saying its week 1.

That is exactly the point. Why further damage the program? There isn't going to be just ONE banner. Every home game.

So the BOT, the Administration, and the big boosters should be asking themselves, 'how can we minimize damage and maximize recruiting?'

They need to get off their asses for a change, and make a decision before the end of the season, so that our recruiting is not totaled. Putting off everything until the end of the season won't give someone like Butch for example, a whole lot of time. But if he had a few weeks before the END of the season, he may even pull off some already committed to other teams.

This time, no more farting around. Get a known factor. Get a proven builder. One that wants to come here. For the money they can afford. One that won't be peeling off after three years of good success to a larger program or the NFL.

One who really finds great talent. One who knows Miami. One who is a Master Recruiter.

They blow this next coaching pick, you can cancel football. We'll be the next Savannah State.

Thank you D$ for a great post. For those of you pro banner, you cannot imagine what a shortsighted decision that would be. Get over your anger and think with a straight head.

I hear where your coming from and i dont think al is capable of getting the job done but do i trust that al will be fired? Not so much one thing we have to remember is that al has two of the biggest supporters in donna and blake, not to mention ive seen banners fly for ireland and they ment nothing other than free agents and agents chuckled when the dolphins called. Well whatever the case i just want my U to be able to compete and dominate.

Don't even care, but just find it funny that this place has finally taken the last step to become grassy.

There are way too many scenarios that are possible for the rest of the season at this point - ONE GAME - for the meltdown that has been going on around here. Speaking of embarrassing, the vitriol being spewed around here is pretty **** embarrassing. Get a grip.

Myself, I will remain optimistic that Miami rolls FAMU, rolls Arky State, and maybe makes a game out of it in Lincoln. I have to believe there is no way Golden and/or Coley could possibly even consider an offensive game plan that is in anywhere near the same universe as the one vs UL.

At this point it is about saving the recruits until we get a new coach. The banner is wrong on so many levels. Let's see how thing go the rest of the year.

Try three seasons and 1 game. Besides the talent on the roster, what aspect of this team or any part of their performance has improved or changed significantly during Golden's tenure?

One game?

People like you are holding the program back.

Frankly, the majority of people are mad at the wrong person. So Golden isn't a Nick Saban, Malzahn, Sumlin, Kelly, Urban type of coach. Well, we get what we pay for. You want to get a top of the line coach, who will stick through the university after they "neglected" to mention this whole Nevin Shapiro scandal? Then pay for it. It was between him and Randy Edsall. And they lied to Golden and he was slick enough to parlay it into an extremely long extension.

We are in this position because it's what those in power have determined sufficient. Such is life. Money talks and bull**** walks, however our University doesn't value football as much as some other schools do so no need to push the issue further.

I can tell you that the people who actually matter are getting fed up with the product on the field. They see the same things you do. But these decision-makers won't look at this banner as an eye-opener. They will look at it as an embarrassment.

-.

D Money you're a good dude..but I simply don't agree, believe, or think this sentence is true.

Those "people that matter" are incompetent when it comes to football decisions. It's because of those "people that matter" that we've endured these last 10 years of mediocrity.

Money and perception talk. The banner would embarrass the administration? Then that's even more reason to do it. Sorry...but I see nothing wrong with it. The die hard Cane fans that really care about this program are the same ones that are simply begging for some action to get this ship floating in the right direction again.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and make no mistake...these are desperate times because we're pretty much off the college football map altogether. If we don't hurry up and become relevant again we'll be 2 or 3 generations removed from the next group of kids growing up having watched the Canes suck...and eventually that will be the final nail when the local kids won't even consider this a viable option to play "big time football" at.

I'm rooting for what I feel is best for the program from this point on...and I honestly feel that the best thing that can happen to this program is for Arkansas State to come in here and beat the #%# out of us, on our home turf...and basically force the hand of the aforementioned inept administration. I simply don't trust them to make the right decision....and God forbid we have another mediocre 8 win season...that would likely buy Golden MORE time.....which is absolutely what we CAN'T have happen. The change needs to happen as soon as possible.

I know about 2.5 seconds after I post this the Don Bailey Jr clones will start yelling and screaming about how "real Cane fans" don't root for losses.....well I'd argue Canes fans with a semblance of intelligence realize when things get to the point where that course of action is needed.

And guess what...that time is right now.

The banner will move more needles after Nebraska than it ever would move before a FAMU game. I think that is the point everyone is trying to make and its very simple point. Its about timing. Hopefully dude who already bought the banner comes to his senses and realizes that if you want to band together and do something for the sake of our program, at least be smart and do it strategically instead of haphazardly thru anger. Just think it thru. That's my final two cents on the matter.

THIS.

I bet you believe Golden and Ono won't have our DB's sit back 15 yards from the LOS again. Or have McCord or some other pass rusher covering a slot receiver again.

My current situation when it comes to Miami football...
