At what spot was Kirby playing? LB is going to be a stength this year.

MIKE.

Even with the loss of Eddie Johnson and Gianni Paul (who I never liked very much), this is a unit to be excited about. Here's how I'd expect the group to shake out:

WLB- Perryman/Grace
MLB- Kirby/Gaines
SLB- Figueroa/McCord/Bond

Grace is one guy I'm counting on to come in and contribute. I think his IQ and smooth athleticism will get him on the field, especially in passing situations. The group above has plus athleticism across the board and has a nice combination of thumpers, chase guys, cover guys and pass rushers. It's also a knucklehead-free group (knock on wood).

Is Kirby big enough to be the starting MLB?

How does Chickillo get 3 sacks and it gets ignored.

We're they not impressive plays?

It's that kid's time. He can't do it by himself out there, he just isn't that type of player, but with some help he can be a beast. I expect a big leap this year now that he has grown into his body. Just too many **** snaps last year.

It's hard to get overly excited about sacks when you can't hit the QB. He looked good, though.

Green and orange for once drowned out the blue and gold of the Naples High School football team.

The University of Miami Hurricanes made their second consecutive April trip to Southwest Florida on Friday night at Staver Field, one year after playing a near-identical intrasquad scrimmage at Bishop Verot High School.

“It’s good for them to get on this side of the state, because there are a lot of Gator and Seminoles fans here,” said Magic Benton, who works at the Fort Myers YMCA and was a wide receiver for the Miami Hurricanes in 1995-98.

“It’s good to get some support on this side of the state.”

Support came from across Alligator Alley as well.

Butch Perez, 39 and a fan from Miami, made the two-hour trip to see his favorite college football team play.

“I’ve got to represent,” Perez said. “I’m hyped up. They’ll be improving.

“I want to see how the defense reacts this year. With the experience we got from last year, I think we can get ahead.”

Last season, the Hurricanes finished with a 7-5 record and did not play in a bowl game because of a self-imposed, two-year bowl ban with NCAA sanctions still looming. The bowl ban resulted from the scandal in which a booster provided football and basketball players with thousands of dollars worth of gifts.

The crowd that approached 3,000 fans included Naples High football players — senior-to-be quarterback Kilton Anderson and sophomore-to-be linebacker and defensive end Tyler Kopp, among them.

“I’ll be watching their defensive ends,” said Kopp, who moved to Naples from Long Island, N.Y., two years ago, immersing himself into a much more intense football culture. “I’ll be watching their technique so I can try and be a better player.”

Anderson watched Miami quarterbacks Ryan Williams, Gray Crow and Stephen Morris.

“I’m glad they’re here,” Anderson said of the Hurricanes. “It’s a great experience for our whole football team to see how hard they work. I like to watch Dallas Crawford. He’s such an athlete. It’s crazy, because I was watching him out here just a couple of years ago when he was in high school. Now, he’s out here and in college. It’s amazing how fast somebody can transform.”
The last time Crawford played on Staver Field, he did so as the starting quarterback at South Fort Myers High School. He and wide receiver Sammy Watkins helped the Wolfpack defeat Naples in the 2010 state playoffs before eventually falling to Miami Norland.

Norland’s running back at the time, Duke Johnson, ranks just ahead of Crawford on the Miami running back depth chart.

Crawford caught a touchdown pass from Crow in the early going of Friday’s scrimmage.

Crawford did so with his brother Jarvis Kinchen and their mother Gina Crawford watching near the sidelines.

The Hurricanes recruited Dallas Crawford as a defensive back but transitioned him to running back last spring.

“He’s back home, playing in front of a home crowd and with a bigger role,” said Kinchen, who was surprised with his brother’s switching of positions. “I knew he had all of the tools to do it, but no, I always thought he would be a defensive player. It shows his maturity and his knowledge of the game. He’s so football smart and football savvy, it doesn’t hurt him at all to play running back. He’ll do anything the football team needs him to do.”

Gina Crawford said the past three years have been difficult for her and her family. Her husband, Steve Crawford Sr., died two and a half years ago.

“Dallas is strong, because his daddy taught him to be strong,” Gina Crawford said. “We’ve had a lot of support from South Fort Myers High School, and I’ll never forget that. South Fort Myers has been wonderful to my family.

“I lost my smile for awhile, but now I have it back. It goes to show you that if you hold on, it will be alright. God is good.”

Gina Crawford said she and Dallas have grown closer over the past two years during their process of grieving.

“He’s keeping his grades up, which is the most important thing for us,” Gina Crawford said of Dallas. “We call him ‘Sunshine.’ Then I heard they’re calling him ‘Wild Dread.’ I just heard that.”

Nate Dortch, also a South High graduate and a redshirt freshman defensive back, also played on Friday.

He has been rooming with Dallas Crawford.

Thanks too all for the scrimmage reports. One guy that I really was hoping would work his way into the rotation at LB is Blue. Will he be adding some reliable depth this year and I'm sure special teams duties? Haven't heard a thing on him. Gabe terry news and info is very rare as well. Any news on how that bad assssssssss is doing? Thanks again guys.

mike,
Blue has been mostly playing with the third team in the scrimmages. Terry hurt his ankle in the Duke game and hasn't played this spring.

Thank u DMoney. I shoul have remembered the Terry injury.

Hmmm, I missed the fact that Dallas´ pops died 2 years ago. Almost tragic when you think about how many of these kids grow up without a father, then one who has one, loses him so early.

Man...the Duke Johnson era is going to go by way too fast. Gotta enjoy it while he's here.

Lulz at Chip Brierre giving me a grey bar for this

Probably a +rep due to his non rep. I didn't know the legend himself was a member here.

Yeah, I doubt it's actually him.

So he joined an hour ago? Make it true, Chip, make it true.

+Rep that *****, Yo :fistbump:

****! That Tolson cat laid the lumber.

How did he end up in Miami from California?

Bond/McCord/Figueroa/Terry

Bond has experience at the college level, although its not division 1 he still has college experience and has had very good success. McCord played alot last year, did some good things and along with a few sacks all weighing about 220, now he's closer to 245, should be a lot better. Figueroa, no college experience, but has been solid during the spring but that's the Spring...I like him a lot but not sold on him until he produces in a game. It will be interesting how this plays out in the fall when the guys are fighting for a spot on the bus and if EJ returns.

Doubt Bonds starts over Alex.

Makes me want to play a 3-4 just so we can get more talent on the field. Our linebackers > our d line.

I've only seen two highlights of Tolson's from a scrimmage and I can already tell he's more physical than Rodgers.

You have to understand, the Defense is not allowed to touch the QB. So there were times when it looked like a D lineman had a line to the QB and they would blow the whistle early. Sacks were sometimes assumed by the referees.

One other example was a safety blitz by Deon Bush with Morris at QB. Bush thought he had an open run at Morris so he just kept running past him (slightly behind). Apparently the ref either didnt see him or didnt think he had a direct run at the QB so he let the play continue. Morris threw a pass over the middle well after Bush ran by. Bush looked over at the ref.

So from this standpoint, you have to take a scrimmage like this for what it is.

There was a really good ongoing battle in that scrimmage between Rashaun Scott and Tracy Howard. Scott got the better of it last nite but its not like anyone was dominating anyone. It was just really good competition.

I specifically remember one play where Ryan Williams threw a beautiful back shoulder ball to Rashaun Scott who was running a fly pattern down the sideline. Tracy Howard was on him like a cheap suit but Rashaun was able to make a last second adjustment and make the catch. Tracy Howard couldnt get his head around in time to make a play on the ball but made the tackle almost immediately.

Just all around good ****!!

Video of the Rashaun Scott - Tracy Howard play at the 1:48 mark of this video.
