Random Run Ins

Manny Diaz at Marlins Park a few years back registering for a marathon. Took a pic with him holding up the U.

Ted Hendricks many moons ago at some bar in Miami Springs. A quick hello and nice to meet you.

There used to be a little Cuban place in Key Largo about a decade ago that I used to see Joaquin Gonzales and various other former Canes linemen at all the time. I think his family had a place down there.

Of all places I ran into Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis was at the Gainesville mall in 1995 and they were being booted out by security lmao. I had just approached Ray and was giving him some dap getting ready to talk some Cane football when security surrounded them and escorted them out.

I don't even know what the reason was nor do I know why they were even there, considering UM wasn't playing a game against UF. There was one other dude with them but I didn't recognize him.
Good ole Oaks Mall. Lol. I lived there for a couple of years. Place sucks.

Doug Flutie at a Burger King in Orlando. He ordered the Whopper Jr. He was playing for the USFL team with Hershal Walker. Could not believe how small he was.

Michael Irvin at a club in Atlanta back in 1996. We talked a bit about the Canes. He called Deion Sanders a punk. When I went back to the booth to sit with my Cowboys friend, I told him, "You'll never guess who I just ran into." "Who?" he asked. "Michael Irvin." I told him. He launches into, "Why the **** would you tell me a lie like that? How stupid do you think..... (Irvin walks by)… well son of a *****..."

1. Met DVD (and Cooney) at South Miami Winn Dixie just prior to this season. DVD is long and looks like he can still play. Nice guy from the minute or so I talked to him.

2. Met Robert Burns at Coconut Grove Home Depot, also pre-season. What a class act. I was a fan before and now am even a bigger fan.

3. A little off topic , but met Jobe, Henderson and Bandy at the UM Food Court when one was a junior and the other two were seniors. At that time Bandy was committed to Oklahoma, Henderson and Jobe were committed to us. Go figure.

4 Saw Greg Mark (at the bar waiting with his family) at Houston’s in the Gables some years back. Said something like I wished he still had eligibility . Didn’t really talk to him. Thought he was a great college player.

5. Would see Mario Cristobal at the gym - this was when he was coaching FIU. Pretty cool guy - very friendly. Remembered him from his playing days and one of my first comments to him was how much he had slimmed down.

6. Ran into Eddie Brown outside Winn Dixie at Coral
Way. Believe he was and may still be working in some capacity at a local law firm. Also a nice guy.

7. Used to see Andre Brown (wide receiver) out and about. Cool guy. Saw him at a Heat game and he was with and introduced me to Louis Oliver.

8. Briefly met Bernie Kosar (he was in the pros then) at the old Hooligans on US 1 near Dadeland. Don’t recall much about that encounter.

9. Going back a bit more I met Wannsdett at what was a Mexican restaurant on Kendall Drive just past the Palmetto Expressway / Dadeland Mall. If I remember correctly he had two very nice and sweet daughters that went to UM.

There’s more but can’t recall further at the moment.

I hope you dominated that cruise.

Most random Worked out several times a few years back with Brett Perriman, and his cool son, Breshad (UCF-currently with the Bucs) in the ATL.
Used to hang with many of the guys from teams in the 80s, so hardly random.

Most random? I ran into Andre Johnson in the toast line at breakfast in the Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana the off season before his year with the Colts. I was wearing a Canes hat and wished him good luck with the Colts, he thanked me and gave me dap as I walked past. Cool, easy dude.

also I got to interact and see Ray lewis everyday during summer camp during the 2000 season with the Ravens. It was right after his trial the year they won the Super Bowl. That was one intense dude in between the white lines. He had legit “switch” that he could turn on and off when he needed it when it came to violence and physicality.

I watched him destroy priest Holmes, Leroy hoard, and rookie Jamal Lewis three straight reps of LB/RB blitz pickup. He then turned to the RB coach and told him succinctly that there wasn’t anyone who was going to be able to block him this year....not on that team or in the NFL itself. Was pretty amazing watching that from 20 feet away “inside the ropes”. You know Ray was right too

Gino Toretta bartending at the Tavern in the Grove 1991 after a Miami win, forgot which team they beat.

Randy Philips pawned a laptop in my shop when I was a pawnbroker. Did a double take when he handed me his license.

Briefly talked to Warren Sapp; teased him if he was still chewing golf-ball sized Copenhagen. He laughed.

My stepfather talked to Jimmy Jones at a local supermarket years ago; recognized him because he was wearing his Super Bowl ring.

Jimmy Jones is still the best football prospect to come out of Okeechobee County.

I've always wanted to meet the Mad Stork and ask him how things were when he was playing at Miami.
