What we desperately need is a great coaching staff. Not a DC who can, with the help of a banned coach, maybe recruit. Miami deserves a coach better than a guy who has fallen flat on his *** at his first big time gig. I can't understand why you have such an intense need to defend this guy. It's mind boggling.

And the Saban comparison is ridiculous. When Saban took over in 1995 MSU had not had a winning season since 1990; plus, they received NCAA sanctions from Perles's tenure.

Regardless when Saban was hired MSU had been a long-running mediocre program. That mediocrity continued for Saban's first few years until 1999 when he beat Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and UF in the Citrus Bowl. They ended up 10-2. LSU hired him, and he built that program until they won a national title.

Are you suggesting that every coach that has a mediocre -- or in Strong's case horrendous -- first two years is a Nick Saban-level coach?

Absolutely not. Simply suggesting that just because a coach has a bad stint with a bad team that doesn't necessarily mean they're a bad coach, and what do you mean Saban took over a team with a losing tradition and sanctions. If you're a good coach you can win anywhere right? He never even won a bowl game at MSU.

You initially said "Saban was horrible" at MSU. Now you're saying he had a bad stint. The facts prove otherwise. MSU did not have a SINGLE winning season for the 4 years before Saban got there. Further, MSU's history before that woeful 4-year stretch was that of a mediocre Big 10 team -- e.g. Purdue, Indiana, Iowa. The cupboard was dry. Consequently, MSU was pretty mediocre for his first few years with 6-5 type seasons. Then in year five, the building was complete, and he kicked *** with wins over all the name-brand Big 10 programs -- Mich, OSU, PSU -- and finished 9-2. That team went on to beat UF in the Citrus Bowl the week after he left for LSU.

That situation is not at all analogous to Strong at the Univ. of Texas. Unlike Saban at MSU, Strong has the benefit of consistent top 10 and 25 recruiting classes in the several years before he arrived. But he is absolutely failing with that talent. The bottom line is that Strong at Texas is not remotely comparable to Saban at MSU.

The irony is that the job Saban did at MSU is comparable to what Butch was building at UNC. They both walked into dumpster fires and had to build their programs from scratch. But for the UNC athletic dept.-wide academic scandal, there's a plausible argument Butch would have had UNC at a 10-2 type year that last year, or the year after, had he been retained.

There's a lot of nebulous "political issues" or "bad fit in Texas" references for Charlie. If he's that intractable that he can only succeed only when the stars line up perfectly, is that someone who you take a chance on?

I'm sure Strong will be able to find recruits, connect with sofla coaches and be a monster in recruiting. We've been down this road before - that's not what we need.

Lastly, when was the last time a coach flamed out at a job and then turned around and succeeded the following year at another demanding job? That's a REAL short list...

Because **** Hurtts brokered a bunch of players to Louisville that UM fell asleep on? **** Hurtts will NEVER work at UM again. So he's not gonna help.

Strong stacked Louisville because of his eye for talent. Louisville sent 11 guys to the NFL over the past two years. Of those 11, eight were three stars or less. That includes three first rounders (Parker, Pryor and Smith). This wasn't an Ole Miss situation where Louisville suddenly started pulling five stars.

There are legitimate reasons to doubt Strong. The argument that he "needed Hurtt's money bag" is not one of them.

Why didn't Strong's eye for talent continue in the 2012 and 2013 class? Their Sr and Jr class right now does not have that type of talent. Those classes should have been good considering they were already winning. Offensively those 2 classes were pretty awful.

Can a Strong supporter please answer this question.

They have good players like Quick and Radcliff. Haven't studied them in-depth, but when you lose 14 players to the NFL in two years there is usually a transition period.

So another thing that isn't Coach Strong's fault.

The truth is Strong was extremely lucky to leave UL when he did. If he would have stayed at UL he would be struggling as much, probably more, then Petrino is right now. He took advantage of an extremely weak conference with a large talent advantage. And even with that talent advantage he lost games he should not. He basically is living off his 1 win vs a Muschamp coached UF team.

If you think we have had bad offenses lately, watch a Strong coached team.

Another thing:

Some of the ridiculous excuses for him are that "he wasn't supported" at UT. Well considering >80% of our fanbase would be appalled at the hire, he would instantly be "not supported" here either. So even if the reason he is failing there is bc of support, he'd be doomed to the exact same fate here, b/c almost everyone would be enraged by his hiring.

So If we are looking to get Charlie Strong (in which we might overpay a little) ... Butch is a WAYY better option

Jimmy was 29-25 as a Power 5 coach when got here. Dennis was 12-10. Schnellenberger had never been a college head coach but he was coming off a disastrous stint as head coach of the Colts.

If we hire Strong, then Texas will likely end up landing the home run hire we should be prioritizing (Herman).

The rebuild in Austin isn't progressing as fast as Strong or fans would like, with crushing loss after crushing loss slowly undermining support for the Texas head coach among the Longhorns fan base, which is now increasingly casting its longing eyes east.

Just as importantly, Texas fans aren't the only ones lusting after Herman -- with numerous job openings like USC, South Carolina, Missouri, and Maryland, in addition to Miami, rest assured that Herman's agent is a busy man these days.

Having led Houston to a 10-0 record and helped construct a recruiting class that features consensus five-star prospect Ed Oliver to rank No. 32 nationally and No. 1 in the AAC, according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings, Herman's brief tenure with the Cougars has been nothing less than a resounding success.

Hence the incredible level of interest in him from around the country despite his inexperience as a head coach.

Is encouraging Strong to consider other jobs, most specifically the Miami opening, as a way of nudging him out in order to hire Herman the right thing for the program? Is Strong on the right track or is he destined for failure?

A significant portion of the fan base, and possibly some big-money donors, however? Well, Herman's neck may be turning Cougar red from the covetous eyes cast in his direction.

Correct, both those other coaches listed were at very bad programs. Charlie was at a winning program, well until he took over.

normally agree with dmoney.. do not on this one. I think strong would be a disaster here. I'm tired of hearing about guys who would kill it down here recruiting. I've heard that before. If we start losing games the kids will go elsewhere. Its that simple. We need a COACH. Not a recruiter.
