Pete tweet: Butch X Dorsey

1. So many different issues that this potential pairing could have. If Dorsey isn't ready for the job, could Butch fire a UM legend?
2. As a first time OC would Butch allow Dorsey to have full control?(as much as an OC actually does have full control).
3. Is Dorsey capable of designing game plans?
4. Is he capable of calling plays?
5. So many people want Butch because he's done it at Miami before but are ok with his biggest hire being a guy who has never done it because his name is Ken Dorsey. No learning on the job at that position. Not right now.

Answers:
1. It's a great question.

2. Why wouldn't he? If he thinks he's talented, and Dorsey shows he has a plan, what's the difference between Dorsey and Fisch?

3. Why wouldn't he be? Again, there are NFL QB coaches who often become NFL OCs. This is an NFL QB coach becoming a college OC. There is a difference.

4. Why wouldn't he be? This is for Butch to assess. Dorsey has been around good playcallers with similar, but diverse enough concepts. He's been around some spread elements. He's been around power running. The biggest variable is his timing and feel. The good news is that's what he lived off as a player. The bad news is we won't know how that translates to in-game coaching till we see it. That goes for any coach rising to coordinator level.

5. Your general statement isn't completely accurate. Some people want Dorsey because of his name. Other people, including myself, are intrigued by Dorsey because of his coaching resume.

They're all just questions that I hope are answered before this potential move is made.

His coaching resume consists of being a high school OC and QB coach for three seasons unless I'm missing something. He was a scout as well. If he had the same resume and the name George Godsey who was the former Georgia Tech QB I doubt people would be as intrigued. He's the current OC for the Texans, he's been terrible. That doesn't mean that Dorsey will be bad thats just another young coach from the same era for comparison.

It also stinks of Butch trying to gain favor anyway he can.
George Godsey.............fomer Georgia Tech who lead the GT to the 2001 national championship and posting a record of 38–2 as the team's starting quarterback. Godsey also effectively rewrote the school record book, setting career records for total offense (9,486 yards), passing yards (9,565), passing touchdowns (86), pass completions (668), pass attempts (1,153), victories as a starting quarterback (38), winning percentage by a starting quarterback (.974), 200-yard passing performances (31), consecutive passes without an interception (193), consecutive games with a touchdown pass (31), and touchdown passes in a game (5).

In addition, he was named the co-MVP of the 2002 Rose Bowl (in which GT defeated the University of Nebraska to win its fifth national championship), Offensive Player of the Year twice (2001, 2002), and First-team All-Big East three times (2000, 2001, 2002). Godesy was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in both 2001 and 2002 and the winner of the 2001 Maxwell Award, which is given to the national collegiate player of the year.

In 2002, he led GT to an undefeated regular season and a National Championship berth, where GT would fall to eventual champion Ohio State. In double-overtime Dorsey and the Yellow Jacket were upset in their bid to win a second straight national championship. He passed for 296 yards, 2 TD's, and 2 interceptions. GT finished the season 12–1, ranking second behind the Buckeyes. Godsey finished the season with 3,369 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He was once again a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Godsey was practically a coach on that championship team.
It is sad and disappointing that he is not doing well as OC for the Texan considering how good he was in college.

Cam newton isn't having that much of a good year passing

Cam Newton has Greg Olsen and then nobody else. He's having a great year relative to what surrounds him on that offense. He may not be putting up video game numbers, but every decision he makes is the right one.

Im not ready to make Dorsey the OC. Quarterbacks coach or another position coach is fine. **** he might make a ******* great OL coach, and yeah Im serious.

Is it normal for NFL OC's to get promoted from position coach without having any playcalling experience?

Yes.

23 of the current 32 offensive coordinators in the NFL were promoted from position coach to their first OC position in the league. NFL position coach was the highest they had reached in coaching. They had never been coordinators in college. So if Butch somehow did get Dorsey, I'm pretty sure that's a steal because it appears he's on track to become an NFL OC at some point in the future.

Jeff Fisch was an NFL QB coach before becoming the OC here and he did a good job. Inexperience doesn't always mean bad. He's done a good job with Cam.

Fisch was was decent at best. And I don't want to hear the "he improved Jacory" schtick. Fish had zero identity and many times his offense disappeared for halves.

We can do so much better than dorsey as the oc. Yea the guy is an NFL QB coach and was a good player at the U but is he really ready for an OC job. We don't need any gambles. Having Dorsey as OC is just like hiring Cristobal (minus his Hc experience) as head coach.

i would really love it if he brought schiano as DC. that would be a hard-nosed, vicious defense.

Worst comparison ever

Did some of ya'll forget that Fisch did the exact same thing? Go from an NFL QB Coach to the Univ of Miami as an OC?

In fact, that's pretty common among major schools. Fisch actually went back to college where he is currently on the Univ of Mich staff.

Maybe you should go down the list of great players on that team and copy and paste all their bios. We can pick and choose which guys we want to coach. On field accomplishments certainly mean coaching success.

Im not ready to make Dorsey the OC. Quarterbacks coach or another position coach is fine. **** he might make a ****ing great OL coach, and yeah Im serious.

Why on earth would he leave the NFL as a qb coach for a lateral move, especially when he might get an offer as an OC with some team next year anyway?
If you don't want him as OC, you just don't want him. Its funny that so many people want Herman, but don't want Dorsey. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Fisch wasn't good here. He was average.

Going to try and not get excited. If it is Butch, I hope they hire him sooner rather than later to save this recruiting class.

Dorsey next step in his career, no kidding, is an OC! He has went the proper route, not given anything.. Much like Marios next step is NFL Oline or coordinator in college.. Neither are ready to be HC. But that's just my .02
