George Godsey.............fomer Georgia Tech who lead the GT to the 2001 national championship and posting a record of 38–2 as the team's starting quarterback. Godsey also effectively rewrote the school record book, setting career records for total offense (9,486 yards), passing yards (9,565), passing touchdowns (86), pass completions (668), pass attempts (1,153), victories as a starting quarterback (38), winning percentage by a starting quarterback (.974), 200-yard passing performances (31), consecutive passes without an interception (193), consecutive games with a touchdown pass (31), and touchdown passes in a game (5).1. So many different issues that this potential pairing could have. If Dorsey isn't ready for the job, could Butch fire a UM legend?
2. As a first time OC would Butch allow Dorsey to have full control?(as much as an OC actually does have full control).
3. Is Dorsey capable of designing game plans?
4. Is he capable of calling plays?
5. So many people want Butch because he's done it at Miami before but are ok with his biggest hire being a guy who has never done it because his name is Ken Dorsey. No learning on the job at that position. Not right now.
Answers:
1. It's a great question.
2. Why wouldn't he? If he thinks he's talented, and Dorsey shows he has a plan, what's the difference between Dorsey and Fisch?
3. Why wouldn't he be? Again, there are NFL QB coaches who often become NFL OCs. This is an NFL QB coach becoming a college OC. There is a difference.
4. Why wouldn't he be? This is for Butch to assess. Dorsey has been around good playcallers with similar, but diverse enough concepts. He's been around some spread elements. He's been around power running. The biggest variable is his timing and feel. The good news is that's what he lived off as a player. The bad news is we won't know how that translates to in-game coaching till we see it. That goes for any coach rising to coordinator level.
5. Your general statement isn't completely accurate. Some people want Dorsey because of his name. Other people, including myself, are intrigued by Dorsey because of his coaching resume.
They're all just questions that I hope are answered before this potential move is made.
His coaching resume consists of being a high school OC and QB coach for three seasons unless I'm missing something. He was a scout as well. If he had the same resume and the name George Godsey who was the former Georgia Tech QB I doubt people would be as intrigued. He's the current OC for the Texans, he's been terrible. That doesn't mean that Dorsey will be bad thats just another young coach from the same era for comparison.
It also stinks of Butch trying to gain favor anyway he can.
In addition, he was named the co-MVP of the 2002 Rose Bowl (in which GT defeated the University of Nebraska to win its fifth national championship), Offensive Player of the Year twice (2001, 2002), and First-team All-Big East three times (2000, 2001, 2002). Godesy was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in both 2001 and 2002 and the winner of the 2001 Maxwell Award, which is given to the national collegiate player of the year.
In 2002, he led GT to an undefeated regular season and a National Championship berth, where GT would fall to eventual champion Ohio State. In double-overtime Dorsey and the Yellow Jacket were upset in their bid to win a second straight national championship. He passed for 296 yards, 2 TD's, and 2 interceptions. GT finished the season 12–1, ranking second behind the Buckeyes. Godsey finished the season with 3,369 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He was once again a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Godsey was practically a coach on that championship team.
It is sad and disappointing that he is not doing well as OC for the Texan considering how good he was in college.
