Parking email

Help me settle an argument:

How many of you would still buy season tix and attend every game if they banned tailgating?
I'd still buy season tix but there have definitely been games over the last decade plus where the tailgate is actually what got me to the stadium. I've also found that non-tailgaters are wayyyyy more susceptible to lame excuses like predicting it'll rain or someone in their family isn't feeling well etc etc. This is because they can usually sit at their houses until about an hour to kickoff until they fully commit to going to a nooner against Bethune.

Consume this with a bump of....errrr grain of salt, but my "connection" at the Hurricane Club is saying that if you select parking this week that you shouldn't have an issue getting the level of pass that you desire- Black excluded as I didn't broach those details.

Black is generally available, think how many BOT's and other large donors dont really care about sports. The HC seats are almost always deserted as an example.

Once upon a time, the tailgate was the big event, and the game was just extra. As I've gotten older, I've come to the conclusion that hanging out with the crew, catching up with everyone is more fun than dealing with the annoyance of the tailgate. Maybe because I was always the planner and guy on the grill, but it's nice to not have to deal with that stuff anymore, when I come down for games.
My tailgates now look like King of The Hill for about a half hour, then walking inside.

I can sit at my house until 45 minutes before kick and be seated for the noon kick.

What was you sample size for this declarative?
300 likely voters in Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

Nah, purely anecdotal. Just that ol' Miami experience of people saying they're on their way or they're about to leave leading all the way up to and event and then 15 minutes after kickoff they text that it's a monsoon at their house or that their kid is vomiting etc etc.

With the tailgate crowd you basically know pretty early into the day who is going to show and that easy last minute flake as the actual game is about to start isn't on the table.

Tailgating or not, I will be unable to attend EVERY game, as I live in Atlanta. But most, yes. Tailgating or not. I'm a UM alum.
I live in Birmingham/Scottsdale so I probably would drop the season tickets and just buy for a couple home games and hit up more away games. Most away games are closer for me anyway.

I hear ya. I went to aTm, GaTech, and Clemson this year.

Was able to secure blue so it's looking like we will stay on the west side which is great. Hoping the rest of my group is also able to get blue next week 4/12.

I live in Maryland and fly in solo for most games (only missed Duke last season) so the hassle of getting tailgate stuff for me isnt worth it so I dont tailgate now. I just park, go into the stadium, get mad at the performance and leave when the game is over. Even if I lived in South Florida I doubt my gameday routine would change though, with or without tailgating.

Thankfully I was able to secure my orange parking yesterday. In my experiences on and off the turnpike is the easiest way in and out of a game so orange is the lot for me.

The sad part is, I've seen a number of posters on other sites (like the on3 and 247 boards) say they are cancelling their season tickets due to the changes in parking and tailgating. I'm not sure how much of that is true and how much is bravado, but I definitely think it's a bad sign for the future, particularly when (a) UM students are no longer REQUIRED to pay the Athletic Fee that used to get them into all the games for free, and (b) student attendance has definitely been lower over the past 20 years, unless it's a big football game or the basketball team has already won 20 games.

I don't know how UM thinks it is going to continue to build alums like me, who buy season tickets religiously while living hundreds of miles away. But if we lose our tailgate culture, we will also lose the hardcore faithful. I'm sure we'll always be able to sell 25 or 35 thousand tickets, there are a lot of people in SoFla who need something fun to do for a few hours on a Saturday. But I'm not sure we will have the hardcore fanbase who travels to away games and buys all the crappy adidas merch and shows up for the team win-or-lose.

Trust me, I was in Houston. And while I'm proud that 700 students bought Final Four tickets, I looked around at our sections...and we were old (and wealthy)...our sections definitely looked older than the FAU sections...

We can't afford to lose long-time fans by making the parking and tailgating even messier. While I've always wanted us to build a stadium of our own and could give you a million reasons to do so, the Dolphins ownership has pretty much justified it over the last couple of years with ONE issue - disastrous parking/tailgating...
You are correct about our fan demographics at the final four. Good points.

I wanted it off because as someone that WORKED his way through school I didn’t see the need to pay for something I was paying for ANYWAY. That’s why. I worked two jobs throughout undergrad and grad school, so when I decided to invest in season tickets(mostly because I got sick and tired of having to fight idiots for seats in the student section) , I refused to pay for things that I didn’t see value in.
You missed the point how the fee helped ALL sports, but that is not surprising with your emotional intelligence displayed.

Imagine a guy who

(a) took an extra job while in college to
(b) buy extra football tickets so he didn't have to fight with his fellow students for good seats and
(c) then fought not to have to pay the Athletic Fee of $138, even though the fee covers all sports

And I highly doubt he ever had to "fight" with his fellow students for good seats at basketball or baseball games...

This guy is a nutter...

The fee doesn’t really go to those sports, you realize how little is raised through that fee? Its around 6 million per year and that’s if every single student paid it which has never been the case. It’s a pittance. If Rad wanted, he could easily find one donor to chip that in every year, and offset the lost revenue if they so wanted.

That's not the point, you clown. The point is, the students contribute, the students feel connected, the students are allowed to attend games.

Nobody claimed that the money helps the Athletic Department to balance the budget.

But it IS funny that you are now arguing how little money is raised, when you were the one fighting to save your $138 fee.

Every time you post, you prove what type of a person you are.

Finally, you lie. Every single full-time undergraduate student USED TO pay the fee. When it was required. Before you snowflakes fought to opt out "because some people don't care about sports".
