I am not one of the people who thinks a great player makes a great coach. To me they should work their way up that career just like anybody else. Certainly they will get opportunities to move up faster than normal ones do.
With that said, I also think they can tell you what they did to accomplish things. You have someone who excelled in the field you are in, it can be foolish to turn that down and just dismiss what they are saying. The fan base and culture around this kids has already dismissed the value of education and a degree which a vast majority of the players will use to make a living rather than football. Don't further the stupidity by dismissing advice from people who excelled and actually made it to the NFL.
It all depends on what you want to accomplish. The kids on the team have probably been use to being the best in their little league, middle school, and high schools. So many just got by on athleticism. Now that group is concentrated down more so you are no longer the best player on the field or even your position. If you want to just be the best that was playing at your highschool at the time then fine, don't listen but understand that is where you are going to stop. Of course you will still have some that are the best on the team and a lot of times in games the best on the field. Again, if you want to be the best on your college team at a certain time period then I guess you can not put in the extra work to be even better. Though just don't expect to make it or stay in the NFL. Also don't expect to win against lesser tallent who work as a team rather than individuals.
Now I understand they put in a ton of work. They put in a ton of work to know how to play the game and to be in great shape. More work than the majority of people. They aren't playing against the majority of people though and are not competing to win games, championships, make it to the NFL against the majority of people. In all those cases there are people out there working harder than you. Some more talented, some less talented. If you want to beat them out then you need to make sure to outwork them, and also to have your team more together than their team is. That way you can win and you can show off more of your talent.
Got to say it is sad in this day and age that if our QBs and WRs were not working out together beyond the limited practice that is allowed. There are so many examples of past and current greats openly talking about how much they work out beyond the practices with their respective groups. Especially as practice becomes more and more regulated out.
