Who cares about overpaying? It’s a bunch of rich guys’ personal money. Not like we have a salary cap and he’ll probably get whatever he wants to be successful here.
this is very true, as long as the money doesn't run out, i'm fine with overpaying

but if by backing themselves into this corner, overpaying for mario means getting a second tier OC and DC then It's an issue

Someone should make a thread of all the posts of people disparaging Miami's shot at Cristobal. That way we can either quickly delete said thread or rub it in their faces when he comes home.

What about option 3, we ban those porsters?

I'm rather baffled by this idea we now should go on the cheap. Whether he's your 1st choice or not Mario is a top tier coach and the market right now is in the ballpark of 10M/yr. So if we want a big name that's what we gotta spend. Lane ain't coming significantly cheaper, if cheaper at all.
Joey Freshwater can't stand "brown water" Mississippi and I think we could get him significantly cheaper. From all accounts he is begging for the job.

So "you think" and "from all accounts" are your two sources?

I mean you’d have to think that he’ll get concessions on staff salary…recruiting…facilities…. Analysts…etc before he signs. It’s not just what he will make. He needs bigger investment elsewhere to give him the best chance to succeed.

I have to imagine Mario is really not going to decide between Oregon and Miami over ~$1-2M per year (aside from the fact that there is no state tax in florida). At $8-10M per year at either school, his grandkids grandkids will be set financially forever assuming he invests it reasonably intelligently. Really up to him if he wants to come home and fix Miami or just coast up there in Oregon forever (with Riley being only real comp in pac).

IMO, I worry a bit about what’ll happen if things don’t work out the way the big $$ donors expect it to.

Let’s say for a sec that Mario can’t get us above 7-8 wins and we’re in a similar position 4 or 5 years down the road.

Do the donors get soured on having spent big for little-to-no ROI? Does that make them less willing to fork out cash next time around?

Per year, or total?

So if Miami gives Mario $100 million over 10 years, and Phil Knight gives $110 million over 10 years...that JUST ABOUT COVERS Oregon state income tax.

Great job, Phil!
Just got clarification from him. He said we are ready to offer 5 yr, 50m. He said Oregon would offer 10 year 110m. So 10m additional I guess.
