On Emmanuel Karnley...

I don’t. At all. It’s the cost of doing business. Nobody in the building is pounding a table saying god damnit we can’t get “insert player X” or we can’t retain “insert player Y” because we brought in this dude for 3 months.

Either the NIL budget matters or it doesn't. I do not want to read "these guys are talented but not as much as they want in NIL and the budget matters" and then read "this guy was a big project and we paid him for a spring tryout but that was the plan and nevermind the NIL payments/signing bonus." I especially have no patience for such convenient doubletalk when the $$$ are state secret.

And it's only the cost of doing business when you can't evaluate certain position groups. Christ risen, it seems every year we waste resources on a winter portal add at DB who never plays a down. Pretty ****** ROI when the stat line is all zeros.

I’m actually glad kids we realize aren’t good enough to play here are getting pushed out, the Thomas gore, and Marley cooks of the world, while they forever have my respect for putting on the U definitely weren’t “Miami” material.

I think every coach in America would consider Mario an elite recruiter. From Bama, to Oregon to Miami. ****, even going back to when he was here originally under Coker.

Now if you wanna argue evaluations, you might have an argument
Exactly! Being a recruiter and a good evaluator are two different things. A recruiter is like a car salesman. He can sell a vision. For Mario, his issue maybe who he’s selling the vision to. Kids and their families buys the vision but they might not be the right prospects.

This is just funny. All I heard was how he was an elite body type and super fast (before he got on greentree). Then our smarter posters watched his film and said this guy was cheeks. Turns out he is cheeks and the eval was another mistake by an ego maniac. Anyhooo, I’ll log off for a bit and hopefully have better news in a few days

There was no opportunity cost here. It was overbuying at the grocery store after you forgot something on the list last time. If it cost you big money, maybe you are entitled to an accounting and some explanation. If not, I fail to see the issue here. He’s gone and the funds can be reallocated.

Mario brought in a whole new recruiting operation. let’s see what they cook up in this window.

Karnley struggled on anything in-breaking on film, was good at carrying vertical.

When Miami got players that were better in the portal (especially Lucas) that was it for Karnley.

To me, it's a good thing that they've upgraded the room to a place a guy like this knows he needs to portal again to get on the field.

I liken it to the NFL Draft, where you know you're only going to hit on 50-60% of your picks for any number of reasons. If you need three corners, you need to bring 5-6 and let the players decide it among themselves. Too often teams are afraid to "plan to fail" by building in a percentage you know wont work out.

It's smart to over sign on problem positions and either have depth or the top players find their way on field and others leave again. It doesn't even mean Karnley is a bad player, he's just not good enough to start here any longer.

I don't get the upset. He's a kid with a great looking profile. Big, fast and athletic, but also underperformed. They brought him in and kicked the tires. We have freshmen as talented. We are building a great looking db class for 26. All I see is a staff investigating every angle to get better.

Is anyone mad that we "didn't need Flowers" because we did so well in the winter portal?
To be fair...I don't think anyone said we did so well in the winter portal because of this kid.
I think people said we did well in the winter portal because of O'Connor. Brantley, Poyser and Blay.

Not sure there's that many holes…Safety is alarming and WR needs some help. The rest is depth. We are a top 15 team right now.
RB is a minor concern, WR is a big problem, LB seems to be a constant enigma, and safety is a major hole.

But QB, OL, TE, CB, and potentially DL should be good enough to have us competing for the ACC title until our annual November faceplant.

Staff imo made the game plan to spend $YY at DB to completely flip the room knowing that it would eventually lead someone or multiple to leave, with the knowledge that A) you almost certainly aren't paying a lump sum, so Payout from winter to spring, it would be dumb to pay a lot for a guy that isn't a guarantee to stick... Someone making$100k probably didn't receive more than$25k type thing... B) it overall elevates the unit cause ideally the strong survive and you only lose the ones in the bottom.

like if Karnley had beat out Damari and Damari left and Karnley stayed, it really wouldn't be much different of an outcome. Richard is staying cause he's injured. Patterson left. I think short term increased cost was apart of the game plan to ensure we had as good 5 dbs as we could get.

They set out to fully flip the room and were willing to spend $x to do it. Ultimately 4 guys are new, and Damari ended up stepping up it seems like, to pair with OJ. The result of that is likely the by far largest improved unit on the roster.

Honestly the ONLY negative for the DB strategy thus far really is it appears we view Lucas as too good at CB to move to safety, and that has resulted in us needing another safety, which is unfortunate. But like if Lucas was just at safety I think this would have worked out excellently. Can probably nitpick that Brantley hasn't played nickel as well, but I'm also not sure there were all that many great nickels to where youd take that guy over Brantley or OConner during Winter portal...

If we would have done the same thing at WR in winter - even without getting just a top Top guy - just getting 3 solid guys and let them all compete over spring. Maybe 1 leaves, and a guy like Chance or Ray Ray also leaves, or even 2 leave and Ray Ray stepped up, we would have been better now than we currently are, because the level remaining is improved, and aren't absolutely desperate for depth WRs like we are now. And as long as you aren't dumb in the contract there is no reason you should pay hella the 3 months between winter and spring portal ...
