Would You Be Upset If Al Left For Pedo State?

Penn state is currently on probation. Golden might be the best candidate to be their coach at this time. THAt seems to be what Al is best at (i.e.: Being a positive spokesperson for the program). He's an elite PR guy and a **** good recruiter. I can see why PSU would want that right now. COuple that with his legacy and I dont see why they wouldnt offer him.

The big problem I see here is that, upon close review of his performance, why would Penn St. hire Golden? The only thing he's ever proven as a HC is that he can take a terrible program and build up to mediocrity. He's never excelled. He's never come close to being great. At Miami, this year, he had a great opportunity take that leap -- from mediocre or pretty good to great -- and he sharted himself massively. This past season was an abomination, the degree of which is masked by the fact that we won 9 games against mediocre or downright pathetic competition.

If dozens of posters on the internet can see that Golden can't coach himself out of a paper bag, especially following this recent bowl game, which appears to galvanized even those most loyal to Golden, then how is it that the Penn St. AD, with millions upon millions at stake, won't come to the same conclusion once he looks beyond the ******* cute binder, the cheap suit, and the 8 pillars of ****? Behind the cute platitudes about attitude and commitment, there is an empty suit on gameday. He's an organized, hard-working guy, a dedicated recruiter, but when the players hit the field on Saturday, he's out of his depth. The results and game-tape show it. My fear is that Penn St. will come to that realization, and we're stuck with this guy for 2-3 more years of frustration.

I'm on pins and needles here. If Golden leaves, combined with the light NCAA sanctions, then this will have been a HUGE year for the program. If he stays, we're on a ******* treadmill to nowhere, and missing out on great coaching candidates.

Al is on the joe rose show tomorrow morning.. In case you may have forgotten

Yeah because no one has ever canceled an appearance on a stupid radio show before. And if he goes on that definitely precludes him from being hired by PUS.

Not to mention the fact that Joe sounds like his head has been stuck in a revolving conrete mixer with some of the softball questions he asks.

This. Nobody else wants it. Look at the candidates that they interviewed.

They could see a Penn State guy that has guided two programs through tough times. They know he can recruit and he has good connections in the NE. I'm sure they feel their game day atmosphere and facilities make their program superior to UM. Might feel if he can win 9 games at UM with the cloud he can keep them afloat through sanctions. Most people nationally feel Golden has done a great job at UM under circumstances. He can spin and sell himself with no problem. In all honesty his scheme and personality would be a better fit at Penn St.

Bc as you can see here, people often choose what coach they like based on generalized concepts.

Take Al Golden. "He won at TEMPLE!" "He had temples first back to back win in seasons" "he's an elite recruiter" "he's got a degree in psychology" "he'd be a lifer" "he knows how to handle sanctions" "he's got HC experience" "he had a top 25 in 2005"

Unfortunately, none of those things tell you how good a football coach the guy is. Can he match wits? Can he identify talent? Gameplan? Beat teams with more talent? Teach technique? Teach scheme? Evaluate his staff?

This is why I am vehemently anti college coordinator and anti James Franklin. You may not like Schiano or Petrino or Butch, but those guys have a ton of data showing they know how to coach, not just figurehead.

We'll see. I'm acting neurotic, because this is too good to be true. After the UL game, I decided to cancel my season tickets. Watching Golden's product on the field is bad for my health and painful. Now, we may be on the brink of hopefully hiring a true football coach.

Why is PSU interviewing Munchak and Franklin today. Does not sound like a done deal to me. Maybe Al and his agent overestimated his value. I don't think that Golden is PSU first choice. Oh we'll it's all speculation. We may be stuck with Golden...and DO.

If we are forced to keep Golden due to his contract that will be bad enough. If the administration doesn't realize that they are holding all the cards and allow D'onofrio to return than I will have lost all faith in them. That would be the ultimate disaster.

Do not dismiss the Munchak interview.

I've heard so many contradictory things that I'm taking a wait and see approach. But Adam Schefter is telling people in the agent community that he expects Munchak to be the next coach at Penn State.

If interviews take place with Munchak and Franklin I doubt there is an offer. Really who the **** knows.

Personally love the overreaction and the lack of understanding how this is business as usual and a business decision, one that anyone of us would do if we were in Golden's shoes, as well. Let's not hypocritical here, cus in our lives we have or would do with our careers. Understand this "game of football" is not a sport and sure as **** had nothing to do with amateurism, that's the biggest myth and BS most fans have been suckered into buying. THIS IS A BUSINESS, sooner you accept an understand that the better you'll be. I am just hoping for a quick resolution either way.

My work is done, as I am just contributing to get this thread to 5k posts and I'm sure some of you guys will pounce!

You don't get it. A lot of us want him gone because we think he is nothing more than an average coach. I'm not upset that his takin some time because I want him to stay. I'm upset because I want him out as soon as possible.

If he finished 11-2 the tone of the discussion would be markedly different

He didn't....and none of the games he lost were close. So what is your point?

Any thoughts on how it will go if Al comes in on Monday morning like this never happened?

If he did and interviewed with PSU people would want him to stay. No usher him out the door. I was agreeing with the post before mine

The Munchak situation has had me worried since yesterday, when it was announced that he would be let go. He may not have college coaching experience, but they can make up for that with the staff they hire under him. And it seems like a good job for him, it being his alma mater, etc.

DMo: what are you hearing about the AD's or school's thoughts on Golden leaving -- that is, like the rest of this message board, are they apathetic as to his departure, or do they seriously want him to stay? The punch to the nuts would be if not only he stays, but then we give the dude a raise.
