No Pena, No Haulcy, No LB, No DTs, No #1 WR…

Mario ceiling as a coach is FIU. He isn't good enough for big time football. Oregon got way better when he left. His supposed best trait is talent acquisition, which isn't that great. We will take 2 steps back next year and win 7 or 8 games.....in year 4. I'd rather work smart than hard

Mario has strengths and weaknesses. We all know what they are. Unfortunately, one of his strengths (talent acquisition) has been diluted given the advent of NIL.

Mario and the staff did a great job during the winter portal window. They flipped the secondary and added much needed starters to DT, OL and the WR corps. But, the spring window was a disappointment. So far we have whiffed on adding WR #1, Safety #2 and DT depth. All known weaknesses. There’s a chance we add RB #3, which is also needed.

With that said, we did retain all projected starters and expected contributors for next year. That’s not easy to do when other teams are back channeling (similar to us). He gets credit for talent retention.

Next year, we will see if he can develop talent. I hope so. The season depends on it.

The talent acquisition has been good IMO. Definitely a huge step up from the last decade or so. The problem that still remains is positional gaps and development. This is year 4 which means his first full class will be 3rd year guys along with multiple portal classes, if we only win 7-8…a very bad sign going forward.

100% Mario’s fault. Dennis did not effing get demoted. Mario is not a smart man. Anyone who has met him knows that. He’s insanely hard working, I respect him for that alone. But this is not the college fb of 5-10 years ago. This is big boy dollars and big brain power needed to operate a program. He’s got to give up control and let his little henchman move on to greener pastures
It’s never gonna happen

It's been decent on paper. Yes, position gaps and development are a huge issue. With him being a terrible X & O coach, he's got to be **** near perfect in the other aspects of his job. Maro was another bad hire by a lazy administration that doesn't care

And what teams are you comparing it to? Outside of Ohio State and Oregon, every single team in the country had gaps this year, even UGA at WR and OL

So really, are you just complaining to complain? Or did you expect us to be top 2 roster in college football?

Talent acquisition isn’t the problem, we were the most talented team in the ACC in year 3. The problem was poor hiring

He has a guarantee 10 year contract no matter how poorly he performs and probably add another 3 if he wins 9 games this year. He's in no rush to do anything.
I agree which tbh isn’t necessarily a bad thing

We’ve needed stability and we need someone to get time to execute their plan

I don’t think he’s content because he has a contract or anything, I just don’t think he’s very good at his job

I'm not comparing it to any other teams.

I'm simply stating my opinion. If you see it as complaining, then so be it.

Yes, bad hires as well

Yeah, I mean obviously we're not the only team 'not getting guys to jump in the portal'

The talent there isn't pretty, and it's not all on Mario.
Then why not address these issues in first portal? Why not address these issues in HS recruiting? Anyone with a clue knows spring portal is limited and full of scrubs. This is absolutely on Mario.

Btw, this staff absolutely had a “plan” for this portal and it backfired on their faces.

This is exactly my issue with "we're saving it for the portal". Its a back against the wall strategy anyway, but the spring portal is extremely limited.

When your 23’ recruiting class fails and hits the portal like it did, you have no choice but go to the portal. The 25’ class will cause the same problems for the defense as the staff fumbled that class, as well.

Where is the accountability? This was an F, and it offsets the excellent progress from the winter portal (making up for a disappointing HS recruiting class). It’s nice to have a plan, but a big time staff must also have a plan B and C. The stakes are too high in the age of NIL and mega conferences.

Mario won the PAC 12 multiple times and the Rose Bowl but his ceiling is FIU?

Please make it stop

Posts like these kill me, lol. It doesn’t matter what YOU think. The STAFF wanted them, and they failed to get them here. That is all that matters. Not how elite or not you think they are.

respectfully, you think only our staff wanted elite must-have players to jump in the portal?
Retention and familiarity work for other teams maintaining their roster just like it works for us.

Unless you advocate exceeding the market and senseless bidding wars it all comes back to talent-evaluation, recruiting, coaching and development.

This post is a little odd and uncharacteristic in the lack of perspective.

Worst spring portal of the Mario era?

Norvell had an offseason like this after his best season, which also ended in disappointment. He thought going undefeated would cause players to fall over themselves rushing to join his program. In the end, they didn’t have the funds or the traction with players, despite a historic season.

Mario had the #1 draft pick and couldn’t make the 13 team playoff. Is this hurting him?

What’s the issue here.

Massive problem at WR, DT, LB and Safety. Particularly quality depth.

Better put everyone in bubble wrap; we lose any starters at those positions, we are BBQ chicken.

Except LB, they’re just all mid and it’s the worst position group on the team from top to bottom.

Corey Heatherman, you’re about to earn every single penny my friend. Good thing is I have faith in him to make this defense somewhat respectable.

Bad news is I don’t think we have the depth to hold up when regression for injuries comes full circle (we were the luckiest team in America last year when it comes to that, chances are we won’t be as lucky this year).

We also failed Carson Beck if we’re being totally honest. Relying on JoJo, Carr and Malachi Toney is absolutely criminal and unfair to both Beck and the WR room. That to me is my biggest gripe of the offseason. We have one veteran in there, and it’s not like he lit the world on fire at LSU.

I think we have depth at WR but are lacking in top-end talent and production.

We're a transfer away from fixing WR, DT, LB and Safety.

Respectfully, retention is a completely different topic and has nothing to do with my post.

My post was in response to a poster implying the L’s we have taken didn’t matter because they weren’t “elite”. My point is it doesn’t matter if HE thinks they are elite or not.

The staff wanted them, they didn’t get them. It’s an L. That’s all that matters.
