New Edition Series WR Room: Vandrevius Jacobs All 22 Breakdown​

The Miami Hurricanes have reloaded the Wide Receiver room from top to bottom with transfers and high school recruits, totaling seven new additions to the rotation. One of them is the 6'0", 182-pound, explosive Vandrevius Jacobs, who transferred in from South Carolina after previously playing at Florida State.

Production​

While at Florida State in 2023, he recorded three receptions for 60 yards and one touchdown in three games before taking a redshirt.

Jacobs then transferred to South Carolina for the 2024 season, where he recorded 12 receptions for 181 yards.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2025, Jacobs exploded for 32 receptions, 532 yards, and four touchdowns while averaging an impressive 17.1 yards per reception in eight games played.

While his 2025 season was productive, there was still plenty of meat left on the bone due to inconsistent quarterback play and shaky offensive line performance. He has proven he possesses the ability to take the top off a defense, and his game-changing speed would seem to complement a lineup featuring Malachi Toney in the slot and Cooper Barkate on the opposite side.

Regardless of how many snaps he earns in this rotation, he has a strong chance of benefiting from one-on-one matchups and safeties being forced to divert attention toward Miami's established playmakers and what should be a dynamic running game. That combination could lead to safeties creeping closer to the line of scrimmage, creating opportunities for Jacobs downfield.

Player Breakdown​

Play 1.

Here vs Clemson they disguise the coverage and have the Nickel drop into a deep half with the outside Corner allowing a free release which would make for a perfect hole shot (Over the corner and under the safety) however Sellers throws up a 50-50 ball.

This snap says it all. This is how you ELEVATE and catch a football at it's highest point, with contact expected no less..

Not only does he secure the catch in traffic but he lands on one leg and is able to immediately get up field with his speed out running the defense for an explosive 75 yard touchdown.

Play 2.

Here vs Texas A&M against a cover 3 look.

He does an excellent job of attacking the Corners blind spot who has deep 3rd's. Once he entered that blind spot that's when he turned on the next gear and separated downfield for the explosive touchdown. Great technique to combat a coverage designed to keep the ball underneath.

The jet sweep action/ Flat dump off absorbs the second level defenders after their run read steps. This creates space for Jacobs.

He is able to make the Safety miss and shows the speed to run away from the defense after the catch for 59 yards.

Play 3.

Here vs Missouri against a 3 high safety look and a Corner 7 yards off him, he still finds a way to take the top off!!!

The Safety gets caught peeking into the backfield which allows Jacobs 1 on 1 over the top which he consistently is finishing for big plays and another vertical touchdown.

Play 4.
Great job at recreating the line of scrimmage and winning with his inside release. When going on a in breaking route is imperative to secure that release. With the Safety biting on the run play it left no help over the top.

Before he gets a chance to separate with his speed he already needs to start slowing down to track a poorly under thrown ball. Great job tracking it and leaping for this diving catch. This should have easily been a touchdown, stats are not everything because plays like this and the following next plays hindered his overall totals.

Play 5.

Against Clemson vs Bump and run technique he does an excellent job swiping the Corner's inside arm in his release which allows him to get vertical INSTANTLY for what would have been an easy touchdown. Sellers does not look the way of the backside 1 on 1 vs cover one which I cannot fathom Mensah being that passive. While the offensive line gives up the sack here the ball should have already been on it's way.

Play 6.

Against Clemson AGAIN 1 on 1 on the backside. He does a great job pushing his release outside to open up his inside move.

Is instantly able to create separation over the top for what would have been another explosive touchdown. You can see his frustration in the video. I can only assume QB play like this is what led him to the look at his options in the transfer portal.

Play 7.

This time to take advantage of soft bail coverage he breaks his route to the outside however this time the offensive line gets blown into the QB as he makes his throw causing the in-completion.

Final Thoughts​

I'm convinced that Jacobs will receive plenty of opportunities to stretch the defense as we pound the rock efficiently while featuring our star WRs opposite him. I envision an impressive 18+ yards per catch as a Hurricane due to Mensah's aggressive nature and the offensive line play that should allow for routes to develop downfield. Look for Jacobs to provide juice to our downfield passing attack and change the way defenses cover the Canes when he checks in.

Excellent breakdown Stevo! Jacobs is much more than a WR with deep speed. Jacobs is a very intelligent player who excels at attacking the weakness in a coverage shell as well as being able to use different techniques to exploit opposing CBs based on how they are playing him. So many times you see kids who are fast but without the tools necessary to be able to exploit their speed. Not so with Dre Jacobs. He shows the ability to attack a CB where he is most vulnerable regardless of whether the CB plays press, bump and run or bail technique.

I am particularly excited about all the different ways that Shannon Dawson is going to be able to exploit Jacobs's skill set in this offense. We haven't had someone like Jacobs here in a very long time. The type of ability he showed in the examples you provided above will add a dimension of explosiveness to this offense that I am very much looking forward to watching. Cheers! Go Canes!

 

We FINALLY have a kid who can blow the top off the defense. Get Dre in tithe mix early and often, let’s see those vertical air raids concepts in action.. 11 defenders cannot guard all our playmakers .

I thought that would be Marion last year but despite a couple
Impressive outings he didn’t emerge as the deep ball threat I expected that could have been on Beck. Mensah won’t squander the gifts VJ offers him.

 

Who has the third most snaps among our WRs. I think we rotate a ton. But I expect Dre to be the third “starter”. And I’m a big time Moore and Upshaw fan. Don’t know enough about Vaughn yet to know where he fits.

I was a little bit more impressed with the WVU kid but in a legit offense with a QB that can actually throw a football, this kid could blow up

Thank you for checking the content out!! I really appreciate it. Dre Jacobs should be a reliable explosive target for this offense. I tell people all the time most of the best deep threats have speed yes but it’s more than that or else guys like John Ross would have panned out! Very skilled and should be hungry to prove himself as more than a flash in the pan guy. With the running game and other weapons in the WR room it should be PERFECT chances to take the top off.

Yeah with this offense the balance and depth everywhere we should see more explosive plays with Mensah at the helm. Carson had multiple guys deep who could have gotten opportunities but he tended to be safe and keep it underneath. This year should have more downfield attempts just off of the QB play style!

I would imagine its a 3 man competition for the X job between Vaughn, Jacobs and Moore. Each bring different elements but we should have more tempo this year and rotation so that the 6 deep rotation gives everyone chances to make plays. I’m actually pretty high on Vaughn. 100% QB play and offensive line at SC was a huge impact on his overall numbers despite only playing 8 games. I’m a fan of Vaughn as well but a skillset like Jacobs should allow everyone more space underneath to operate once teams fear his ability to take the top off.

 

Didnt realize he missed a third of the season also, makes his numbers look even better in that struggling offense USCe had last year.. He looks like he never touched the weight room but he has unique skillset that will put him on the field.. Looking forward to him adding explosive element to offense..

Yeah 6 ft 180 pounds isn’t a physically imposing guy but deff has the skillset we can take advantage of! Tbh going through the tape mid way i kept asking myself “why do they hype up this QB?”

Because he is like that UF QB richardson, 6'2 240 and can run lol.. They fall in lve with wrong things when you see clearly he cant throw accurately, throwing late, etc. He had a couple splash plays his first year playing and people want to project but that tape last season was BAD.. Now they want to blame it all on oline (which was terrible also) but I just dont see it

Agreed. I mean the comp at WR is so insane that whoever emerges as our top 3-4 is going to be the best WR core we’ve had in decades. Good on the portal guys clearly not scared to compete

OL was cheeks 100% giving up sacks vs 3 man rushes but the QB is just not a top draft pick. Physical traits over tape gets so much GM’s fired that i’m shocked it still happens. Literally danny dimes was an upgrade over richardson lol

Dawson's biggest challenge is going to be keeping the WR and RB room happy. They are as loaded as I can remember having been a fan for 40+ years.

Impossible to keep everyone happy lol.. Just not gonna happen, you can be the highest character guy who ever lived, it doesnt matter when there are 8 guys in rotation, someone will get left out.. There will be competition and there will be order set, some will get left out and then when playoffs come, the depth chart will tighten again even more..
