Coach Dawson Infusing Air-Raid Concepts in Diverse Formations

Series:
Coach Dawson's Air Raid passing concepts in different looks & formations.

The Miami Hurricanes have displayed a potent passing attack so far this season under Coach Dawson, with TVD already passing for 1,042 yards in 3 1/2 games of action. A big reason for our passing games success belongs to the Offensive line but the creativity with incorporating Air-Raid passing concepts out of different looks & formations. This allows our receivers to continue to run the same concept at a high level, while the different window dressing keeps the defense on their heels. The video above shows how we have been able to consistently run the "Out & up" double move from the slot all year by making it look different pre-snap. Please check the video out and comment what you think about our OC adapting his Air-Raid passing concepts!

Temple Out and up.PNG

For the first time this year we ran the concept out of a trips formation, 12 set personel with 2 TE's in the game. The Inside stems on the seem routes clear the sideline for X's easy TD.

Just the game before vs Bethune we see the same concept out of a 10 set personel (4 receivers) in which the inside stem on the vertical seems opened the back shoulder pass for X.

We allow our true freshman the chance to make a chunk play, out of another 12 set with our two TE's backside we continue to go vertical with the concept.

We can even go back to game 1 vs Miami (OH) where we ran the concept out of a 11 set (3 receivers 1 TE) our of a 2 by 2 formations.

Coach Dawson's ability to keep the offense simplistic for our players but keeps the defense guessing just allows us to play much faster and with much better results. Make sure to watch the video! Please like & subscribe !#GoCanes

Someone needs to issue an arrest warrant for Josh gattis

My favorite part of offense has been the pace. Its not the lose us the game in 1st half by going to fast garbage Lashlee ran. And it's not the mongoloid caveman snap ball under 5 secs trash Gattis used.
My favorite part of the offense so far is that the formations, spacing, and designs are intentional to matchups, and they're not "all or nothing" (ala Gattis clearing out for Mallory). So far, we pick a matchup (in space, so that's nice) we like, but give TVD a clean alternative.

Beyond that, Dawson so far has shown a good instinct for timing of when we need to push the ball vs take what the defense gives us.

Nothing earthshattering, except that good, mindful coaching and strategy have sometimes been earthshattering for us.

That's the crazy part too. He hasn't really needed to do anything above and beyond.

Eventually he will when we come up against the main opps on the schedule but so far, he's done the minimum required as a play caller and reaped the rewards.

For people complaining about the lack of TE involvement - I believe that as teams start to try and limit the vert/post WRs the TE route concepts will "magically" open up. They're there already, it's just nobody has been able to really challenge our WRs deep this year. It will happen I'm sure, and when it does, look for that random 7-8 catch game from the TE position. Just my .02

This is the fun part. I know it is cliche but I think there are many “wrinkles” left in this playbook. The TE have primarily blocked because we can just bully teams at the line. I look forward to the finesse part of all this cause I cannot help but think that is coming up. Our offense is well paced and does not panic, at least so far. The audible freedom has done wonders as well.

Not having to resort to the flea flicker for passes over 10 yards is refreshing.

It's beautiful, yet simple. If you have the TE open for 12 yards and on the same play you have a WR open for a 40-50+yard TD, which one do you throw to?

Perfectly said! Sums up the last couple of decades. We need pony up at the end of this season. That would be the next "earthshattering" decision for the UM administration to break the decades long incompetence.

For some crazy reason I believe they actually will pony up and do everything to keep these coordinators. It just feels different.

If we keep playing like this TVD goes in the first round and Dawson will be the hottest coordinator. Would love to keep him around a while longer hopefully a big pay bump will keep him satisfied

Something else we haven't seen much of yet is the full breadth of Dawson's screen game. When I was looking at his UH film I counted at least 4-5 different types of screen in the same game, plus some really cool wrinkles that are set up by the screen play.

UNC, Clemson, FSU are where you're gonna see the entire bag of tricks.

Exactly right. Against TAMU we went after the freshman corner. Against Temple, X was matched up against a safety on his first TD and a linebacker on his 2nd. And I love that TVD is recognizing pre-snap where the matchup is.
All of our receivers will win favorable matchups. Dawson forces the matchup and TVD sees it and delivers.

The TE passing game is coming but the TE's have been impact players all season long. Expect to see some passes to TE's in the next few weeks especially with the return of the cheat code upon us.
