Mike Smith- 247 Reevaluation

The way this staff is recruiting, by 2016 we will have the best front 7 in the nation.

That'll probably depend on the Curtis Porter role, but it looks like by 2015 we'll possibly have the best edge rushers in the entire nation.

We need at least 2 more Valentine-types waiting in the wings.

I see him like a T. McCord early in his career, what do you think Lu?

Agreed. See post #12 in this thread. I think he's being recruited to fill that spot. Chad Thomas is being recruited to be a more dynamic version of Chickillo. Jackson is being recruited to create redundancy with AQM.

If the staff can close with Pelon and Moten that will give us four 4 star DT's in this class. One more stud JUCO DT in 2015 and this D Line will be loaded.

With guys like Fig(JR), Armbrister (RJR), Kirby(SR), Grace(JR), Young(SO), Smith(SO), and Owens(SO) at LB behind those lineman that could be something very special.

I think Armbrister would be a senior on that team, no?

The best part about it is that the strength of a Miami defense should realistically always be the DBs. It's cot**** South Florida. You really don't have to leave the area to have an elite secondary. Sprinkle a Safety or corner from out of state and you're looking at what should be a carousel of NFL DBs.

Typo corrected.

Just looking at 2015 defensive backs available in south Flordia, we are poised to have just as much if not more talet on defense than anyone in the nation.

Tyrek Cole 4star CB
Tarvarus McFadden 4star CB
Kendrell McFadden 4star S
Jaquan Johnson 4star S
Jordan Cornkrite 4star S
Shawn Burgess-Becker 4star S

With respect to that, do you see any cause for concern with respect to our DB situation (safety in particular) looking at roster and current recruits?

when asked if a fourth star was coming, Shurburtt replied "Yes"

I don't know why, but this annoys me. The star is coming? Are you mining for it? Is it hidden somewhere in Machu Pichu? Is it being handcrafted in some artist's studio in Italy?

Yes, of course. We'll need 2 Safeties from this cycle to contribute. Bush, Jenkins and Carter will have to hold the fort until we get proper depth at that position. The following cycle should have at least 2 Safeties who could be impact players. Burgess-Becker is presumably one. Jaquan Johnson is another.

This is why the star system is funny to me. Us in South Florida have been watching Smith wreak havoc for a year and a half and now a national guy goes to see him and "gives" him the 4th star, which then outsiders will look at him as a better prospect than he was before he had the star.

Yup. When you start talking national recruiting sites, everyone has their favorite players from their regions of the country, so it basically boils down to an auction.

Anyone that even saw just highlights of Smith knew how good he was.

Agree with you, but isn't Burgess-Becker wanting to play WR.

This.

While they're at it, they may want to take another look at Owens, Young and Langham.

Predator Mike.

My second favorite recruit in this class behind you-know-who.

I love watching him hunt in his film.

Yeah he probably should play receiver, but even then, Jaquan Johnson, kenbrell McFadden, Calvin Breton, and I think Tim Irvin could possibly be a safety as well, not to mention some out of state stud that will be considering us when we're competing for championships by the time 2015 signing day comes around

I dunno. Duke Johnson's recruitment taught me a lot about worrying about positions when these guys are so young. I had some of his family members going nuts on another board because Duke, a rising Soph, wanted to play Corner. They thought he'd be too small to play RB in the NFL, which was his goal. Burgess-Becker is a junior. I have no idea what he'll play. He looks great with the football in his hands. He looks like he can be a monstrous Safety. We'll figure it out.

When I watched Northwestern last year, Smith consistently stood out. He disappointed me this summer at the Golden camp, as he looked limited athletically in space. Then I watched him against St. Thomas earlier this month and remembered why I was so high on him.

Smith is a pure football player. Not only is he going to help our pass rush, but his effort level will rub off on the rest of the defense.

We had this formula down, in the beginning of the century. Then we strayed away from it and allowed teams like LSU and UF to become the defacto NFL-DB factories. We are working our way back but we need to put those guys out of business.

Exactly. The star system is for nerd f.@ggots. Way too many great players over the years who started out as low-rated recruits by the nerd donkeys who run those dopey services.

That's why I'm one of the few not worried about our DT situation. The Don's a master evaluator, recruiter and developer. If he likes the guys we're bringing in to play DT or to grow into the DT position, then so do I.

I don't think he does, which is why he hit the "waiver wire" so hard and pursued every decent JUCO. Aside from Pierre, the 2011 and 2012 classes look pretty barren in terms of DTs.

But that's what good leaders do. They recognize errors and act quickly. I have confidence he will get it right, just like he did this year with Renfrow and Kamalu.
