Reminds of the dumb *** reasoning the Texas Governor gave for continuing to sell assault rifles to 18 Y/O's. Said something to the effect of Texas has been selling rifles to 18 Y/O's since it's founding, but that Texas has only been having these types of massacres for the last 10 years. That's like saying a 40 Y/O rapist is innocent, because He didn't commit a rape till He was 40 Y/O.

You’re right, we really haven’t but one big obstacle in tackling heart diseases and obesity is combating big sugar/big dairy/meat industries and that goes nowhere and often gets politicized. But that’s a separate issue. Virtually any issue we try to tackle in this country gets political bc some place, some where, someone is complaining that their freedoms are being infringed upon. Jmo.

It’s a different issue but one that doesn’t involve infringing on rights, which is the point I’m making. If we can’t solve those, how are you gonna solve the ones with legal ramifications? You aren’t.

It is well known in the US we have a massive big pharma problem for massive profits. The world trillion and US multi hundred billion dollar a year industry before Covid has billions of dollars to sway politicians and lobbyists.

Look at the millions spent on all the prescription drug commercials on TV in the US where they are not allowed overseas. Only four counties in the world including the US will allow them. No country in the world has the access to prescription drugs like the US especially mind altering antidepressants. That is the problem in this country.

In the US we have always had guns for hundreds of years and what has changed? Not guns.

Healthy adults who are taking certain antidepressants have a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and violent behavior, according to the results of a systematic review.

The research suggests that selective serotonin and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors may increase the risk of events that can lead to suicide or violent behavior in adults with no sign of a mental illness.

“While it is now generally accepted that antidepressants increase the risk of suicide and violence in children and adolescents (although many psychiatrists still deny this), most people believe that these drugs are not dangerous for adults. This is a potentially lethal misconception,” warn the researchers, based at the Nordic Cochrane Centre and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

Doctors in the US are giving out these drugs like candy. My son is a psychiatrist and is always under pressure to see as many patients a day for his overlord's profits. My son's goal is to get his patients off drugs and change their life style and daily habits instead of drugs and a repeat lifetime patient. For arguments sake only less than 20% of these drugs work and he says around 10% like the ones for ADD. The drug companies are always sending out hot women to take him and other doctors out for lunch pushing their drugs for them to prescribe.

Metal health is a lot of time and work from many people. Would be easier and make more money to just talk to a patient for five minutes and just prescribe antidepressants and see more patients an hour backed by big pharma. Instead of talking for thirty minutes or longer and hopefully get his patients back to a normal more positive productive life. That is what we all want. But the money people could care less. Around 46,000 people in the US die from suicide while 1.2 million have attempted each year.

Just look at big Tobacco in the US. Tobacco products kill around 480,000 people per year in the US. Smoking-related illness in the United States costs more that 300 billion each year.

US gun owners possess 393.3 million weapons in a country of 330 million. How many people have been murdered from all rifles including the politically wrong called assault rifles? As tragic as it is they are only around 200 deaths, that is it. 200 versus 480,000 . The numbers do not lie like the corrupt politicians and corrupt multi billionaires that want to rule you. What is standing in their way?

I think it is an interesting comparison. Both are societal detriments, but money has a stake in nothing changing.

Wouldn’t telling someone what they can eat, or forcing them to exercise be seen as an over reach and infringement? Wouldn’t trying to divert farm bill funds from corn crops and states to food crops to subsidize the price of healthy food instead of Corn syrup and beef turn political?

big food, like weapons manufacturers, has a strong lobby, and people don’t want to be told what to do so there is a not insignificant amount of support for what isn’t in our own best interest. End result is similar, people suffer the consequences of declining health and policy is dictated by people with a financial interest.

Changing how food is manufactured isn’t gonan do anything but cut into the bottom line of the manufacturers. Take out the preservatives and random sugars. You aren’t forcing anybody to eat anything. You’re making all of their choices healthier. There’s a reason there weren’t many fat people 30-40+ years ago

Anyone with a brain understands eating healthy, getting some daily modest exercise, not smoking, and not drinking to excess would dramatically reduce chronic levels of coronary, pulmonary, and neurological disease, obesity, and mental illness.

Good luck with any serious policy address even getting started.

Eat healthy? Okay. Here come the extremist-vegans wanting to ban all animal-based food products. Opposed by factory-farmers from Big Agriculture who insist they need their animal raising and processing horror-shows to maintain high profits and fueling the Fast Food Industry. Both which have 99% of Congress in the hip pockets.

Next up we’ll try to remove processed sugars. Hahahaha.

President Musk will have the US colonies on Mars before that happens. :)

Average person? Try average doctor - they are woefully ill equipped to advise on nutrition and they are institutionally tied to fixing stuff with medicine instead of holistically. The whole medical training program needs to change.

100% right. There are some measures you can take but at the end of the day there’s only so much you can do because of the sugar/meat lobby and the fact that it’s a cultural and educational thing.

I believe processed sugar is the single worst nutritional problem we face. Reducing, let alone eliminating (not easy - **** is in almost everything), can have a dramatic effect improving anyone’s physical and mental health profile.
