Longtime heavy booster and Butch supporter says...

Dont you dare tease me with this. It would be effing HUGE. Fvck USC. That's a program that couldn't touch our **** in our best years.

While our program was unbelievable during our glory days, USC is one of the few programs I believe could keep up with us at our best.

And yet they never did. Despite having a coach who is equal to Jimmy Johnson in Pete Carroll.

Haven't read the entirety of this thread, but isn't there a huge possibility that Kelly is this search's Gruden?

I think all Lu is saying is that Chip might come free and that Miami would try for him if he does. The source also said "no" on Mario. I don't recall Lu saying anything about likelihood of getting Chip or that this was a near done deal - quite the opposite really. Good news is that we seem to be willing to compete for the best of the best.
What? Lu most certainly implied that Miami is actively pursuing Kelly (at least according to his source):
More importantly, he threw out that it looks more like Chip Kelly right now than other names discussed, if we can beat out USC. Things are actually moving on this front. Specifically, "Kelly is between us and USC right now." I cringe a little in hopes it's true we have that kind of status, but that is an exact quote. I interpreted everything to mean Kelly is actually considering us, and that he's more likely to come back to college than I previously thought.

I used exact quotes, or as close to it, of what was communicated.

Has anyone known LuCane to post bull**** just to post bull****? That isn't his style.

I'm taking this as gospel, because Lu's about as reliable as sources get on this 'ere interwebs.

With that assumption made, the question is: Does Chip choose USC or Miami?

USC would mean familiar recruiting ground for Chip. But does five years at Oregon mean he's committed to going back west?

Maybe he looks at which team he can turn around the fastest. Does one Bradley Kaaya make the decision for him?

Good questions. He is from NH, so I would say he probably doesn't care about what region he coaches in. If he is as arrogant and hard headed as people say, he probably thinks he could win anywhere, which is true.

Being a state with no income tax will help us a great deal in any competition with USC. Our $4 million salary is roughly equivalent to $5.5 million in California on a take-home basis, depending on the number of exemptions and other deductions.

Thanks. That was my assumption.

Maybe I'm thinking like a homer but I can't see Chip going to USC to compete with Oregon every year. I know he generally DGAF but that would be like the reverse of Mangini-Belichick between Chip & Helfrich and the rest of the staff/program/school in general. He would risk burning bridges with a lot of influential people imo.

Does not compute. Top marginal rate in Cali is 13.3%. I get your point, but your numbers are off.

And without having to deal with any real competition in state. UCLA has been pretty irrelevant and Stanford while respectable wouldn't factor into this comparison. I've always liked USC too in that I see them as the closest thing to us on a lot of fronts but we've accomplished a whole helluva lot more with less in a much shorter time.

I don't like Chip, but it would be huge for The U to get him. I think a lot of kids would line up to play for him. I would say one thing though Kaaya is not a fit for Chips system. Rosier would be a better fit with his mobility and passing abilities. My concern is his perceived control freak, unearthly ego, smartest man in football mentality.

No chance he would end up choosing us over USC if this were true...

They have deeper pockets, stadium, facilities and recruiting grounds that he's already familiar with..

The only reason I can think of, is that he would want a complete change of scenery and find Miami more appealing..

Jesus ****ing christ people like you don't deserve to be fans of this team......Who won more titles in your lifetime, Miami or USC? For me, it's been Miami 5 USC 1......Now tell me which program is better?

Did I misstate something?

I do think Chip would kill it here though. I'd be like when Dennis Erickson took over.

Dennis took over a team full of Butch Davis recruits. Maybe Chip kills it maybe not

holy ******* **** are we really going down this road? that was jimmy ******* johnson's team. does bama win with cristobal's recruits?

I don't think it'd factor into the equation. Saban happily went to Alabama where he now regularly competes with LSU.

Same with Dantonio at MSU (who used to be the DC at Ohio St)....

It's pretty simple. Chip Kelly is THE homerun hire for UM. They need to do everything in their power to make that happen.

People have referenced the influence Adidas may have in this hire. I've always brushed that aside as nonsense. But, Chip presents a very unique opportunity for Adidas to make a huge splash. If he is even remotely interested, Blake should be on the phone with Adidas brainstorming. I would not consider it unreasonable for Adidas to donate an indoor practice facility if it meant having Chip Kelley coaching Miami.
