Is FSU Actually Good?

Fsu’s most vulnerable spot is scheme related. They run a 3-3-5 defense. Good defense for limiting a passing attack but its biggest weakness is a power run game. Styles make fights. Whether or not they are good isn’t as important as the style of play. Teams that play like us on offense are a bad matchup for them.
Tony White is a good DC though if I'm not mistaken

The defensive guru's can correct me though

Yes. I think they are actually very good. Alabama has elite analytics and they stomped them.

I would probably have FSU as the favorite being at home, not a prediction, but a betting favorite.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but styles dictate and our style is all wrong for FSU as long as we don’t get cute and stay with whats working.

I don’t think this game is as close as some of you think it will be. We will shut down their running attack and force TC to pass. I expect multiple picks by our secondary before the game is over.

Its early and I reserve my right to update, but at the moment, I think Miami rolls 38-20.

Too much time to wait for this game so I'd like to do some rampant speculation based on small sample sizes:

I am sure both teams are going to come to play, but do we think FSU is actually good? If we are being real, the comfortable home win over Bama is one of the best wins of any team in the country to date and the offense looks explosive. But they are also just -6.5 favorites against Virginia this week (yes, on the road) and Virginia isn't bad, but they aren't good either.

Quick thoughts:

- I think Gus Malzahn and Tony White were excellent coordinator hires.
- I think Castellanos is REAL dangerous as a runner, especially in Malzahn's scheme, but I am not buying into the idea that he is an improved passer yet.
- I think their running back room looks pretty solid. That Kromah kid is a big boy.
- I think the Front 7 as good if not slightly better than what we saw from ND and UF.
- They are not very deep, especially in the secondary.

I am confident Miami is the better team.

If I had one big worry? Castellanos' scramble ability can neutralize some of our pass rush and we are still prone to giving up a big play or two in the passing game. If we keep Castellanos and the receivers in front and make them sustain drives, we should be able to beat them on that side of the ball.

Beck and the passing offense will be critical, because that is the best way to beat the 'Noles defense IMO.
great point on QB's who can run avoiding pressure and running for first down, this has been an achilles heel for 30+ years. VT seemed to always have a QB to elude initial rush and get a first down. Castellanos is a perfect fit for Gus Malhazans O

Coordinator hires were good. Malzahn is the only threat to us so long as we communicate well and spy castellanos. Problem for them is although castellanos is a better rusher than brown or bj gagway he's a far worse passer than brown and just as inconsistent as gagway. Their front 7 ain't even on the same level as ND or ufag. But they do have several explosive players. Long as we ain't complacent and remain focused on our keys we dog walk these ******* too. Them being top 10 from being unranked just by beating a **** bama squad and the girls YMCA twice is wild. But it works for us

It's even harder because Alabama has looked really good since they played FSU, albeit against bad teams.

But a 70+ point shutout against Monroe is pretty crazy. And then they throttled Wisconsin, who is bad.

It's just so early in the season still. That's why I keep saying how interested I am to see fsu play UVA this week. That game tells me a **** of a lot, IMO, even though it's only UVA.
I expected Bama to smash FSU. My recollection of the game was that Bama shot themselves in the foot a few times and could never get over the hump, and then FSU put them away. I won't believe FSU is good until I see them beat or stay close with UM (which I don't think is happening because UM is way better than them in my opinion).

Bama is good, but not great, and they will likely lose another game or two this season.

Thank you for always being honest. Too many posters letting their hate cloud their judgement. This will definitely be our toughest test so far this season.

Night game at Doak in front of a rabid crowd. They’re going to throw the kitchen sink at us. Mario has to have our dudes focused and ready to take a haymaker from the beginning. If we can withstand the first 15 minutes and control the ball ending in TD’s, we’ll have a good shot at getting out of there with a W.

He might be a good coordinator but the fact is White runs a 3-3-5. 3 down linemen. 3 LBs. 5 DBs. They will blitz from all angles to control the pass game. Their blitz is not going to stop the power run game. Miamis OL and RBs are excellent at blitz pickup so if/when they blitz I believe Beck will have no problems getting the ball out quickly.

Your confidence is infectious.

Alabama looked like they had never seen a Malzahn offense and played like somebody woke them up and told them they had to go play a game that day. I just think the sample size of basically one game, the first game, tells you nothing. Kent State and East Texas A&M have combined for three wins the past two seasons.

The Virginia game will tell you everything you need to know.

Saying Castellanos is a "far worse passer" than Brown is a serious stretch. I am not sold on Castellanos as a passer and the sample size is small, but he has made a lot of big-time throws already this season. He is...at worst...as good a passer as Brown if not slightly better with better weapons.

Going back to my “styles make fights” comments, I believe Bama currently runs an “air raid lite” offense. People think “power SEC football” when they hear Bama but that’s not who they are now. 3-3-5 is an excellent defense against Bamas style of offense. Maybe even would have been somewhat effective against last year’s offense in terms of creating negative plays. We play bully ball. That is a significant weakness of the 3-3-5.

They outgained Bama by 20 yards. It wasn’t exactly some kind of beat down. The main issue was Bama could not run the ball at all and their quarterback played like a deer in headlights. We can run the ball against anyone and have an experienced quarterback who’s won multiple SEC titles. I fully expect them to bring their A game but we aren’t a good matchup for them.

This is why trelle has always said Don't talk football with casual fans. I'm trying my best not to say something here. So I'll simply leave it at, you and I have a very different version of what good football is. You can't be 27 of 38 for 590 yards. three touchdowns & one interception in three games, and say someone has made a lot of big time throws this season... And if you watched Brown last season he's already shown he's a far better passer than Thomas castellanos. The dude literally has three touchdowns against East Texas A&m and that's it for his stats this season. Had an interception against Kent State that I believe was a pick six and nothing at all against Alabama. So please tell me where all these lots of great throws have been? Are you saying he threw an amazing bubble screen, an astonishing 7 yd out, what are we discussing here? Because again clearly your version of good football and mine are very different. You can't as a fan base talk **** about Emory Williams insistently and then say Thomas castellanos is a good thrower.. I don't know if you're trying to show you secretly a Florida State fan on here or you just don't know football. I'll leave it up to you which one it is.

He is, although I think its a high floor low ceiling type system that could be bludgeoned without serious hogs up front but I do believe he is a good DC.

And if they sit in 2 high all day and force us to be patient with a light box then we will bleed them out, chip away at them and wear them out.

We do have the perfect formula for what will be a very tough environment

Not sure how good FSU is. Not sure it matters really. Wouldn’t even be opposed to doing the unthinkable and taking the ball if we win the toss (we won’t but just saying). We are built to take the air out of a stadium
