Is FSU Actually Good?

SP+ makes it Miami -8 on a neutral. He still has FSU ranked 31 (Miami is 12).

Sagarin has it -7.5 on a neutral.
I’ll be very surprised if we are favored by 7.5 at F$U at night when we were favored by 7.5 at home against UF at night.

Mesidor is going to be extremely important against FSU. He is an elite pass rusher but sometimes he doesn’t close the pocket in and lets a mobile quarterback break loose. He also failed to set the edge and contain several times on the drive that Florida scored on and I’m sure FSU will be running at him and not Bain who is excellent in Pass Rush and Run D.

Mesidor is a beast. He’s going to have to play with a lot of discipline against FSU because TC will scramble out if we don’t squeeze the pocket and QB options put a lot of pressure on the DE

Their offense is Explosive but can they sustain drives? Defense haven't seen much pass rush from them and just overall haven't been tested. Alabama was a great win and a team that will be solid by the end of the year but as we've seen across the country the first year starters struggled a lot week 1.

From the eye test they look good but in the trenches I don't think its even close to what we have. Either way this a huge game from a coaching perspective because we have the roster advantage but can the coaches have us prepared for a game of this magnitude.

I expect a close game. Our tuff and fizical ends up the difference

If we blow out FSU in their barn though…

I’m going to hold off until after the UVA game. Week 1 can be funky and any P5 team can do that to FCS and Kent State.

7.5 on a neutral would be more like -5 at FSU.

I think 4.5 would be a good opener right now, depending on what happens Friday night.

We have allowed an average of 76.3 yards rushing with no team getting to 100 yards. Rushing is FSU's strength with an average of 363 yards but that includes games against 2 very bad teams and a Bama that they caught in the first game. I like our defense in this situation.

It’s so hard to get an actual read on FSU because they’ve played a really bad FCS team, one of the worst FBS teams and and Alabama team that would probably not be ranked if they wore a different uniform.

It's even harder because Alabama has looked really good since they played FSU, albeit against bad teams.

But a 70+ point shutout against Monroe is pretty crazy. And then they throttled Wisconsin, who is bad.

It's just so early in the season still. That's why I keep saying how interested I am to see fsu play UVA this week. That game tells me a **** of a lot, IMO, even though it's only UVA.

Too much time to wait for this game so I'd like to do some rampant speculation based on small sample sizes:

I am sure both teams are going to come to play, but do we think FSU is actually good? If we are being real, the comfortable home win over Bama is one of the best wins of any team in the country to date and the offense looks explosive. But they are also just -6.5 favorites against Virginia this week (yes, on the road) and Virginia isn't bad, but they aren't good either.

Quick thoughts:

- I think Gus Malzahn and Tony White were excellent coordinator hires.
- I think Castellanos is REAL dangerous as a runner, especially in Malzahn's scheme, but I am not buying into the idea that he is an improved passer yet.
- I think their running back room looks pretty solid. That Kromah kid is a big boy.
- I think the Front 7 as good if not slightly better than what we saw from ND and UF.
- They are not very deep, especially in the secondary.

I am confident Miami is the better team.

If I had one big worry? Castellanos' scramble ability can neutralize some of our pass rush and we are still prone to giving up a big play or two in the passing game. If we keep Castellanos and the receivers in front and make them sustain drives, we should be able to beat them on that side of the ball.

Beck and the passing offense will be critical, because that is the best way to beat the 'Noles defense IMO.
I hate to say it, but they look excellent so far this season.

I know that they’ve only played Baga, and every other game they played and beat the snot out of the sisters of the poor. But good teams destroy crap competition, and that’s exactly what they’ve done.

We’re gonna have to slow down the tempo and try to have long drives that eat up lots of clock and end up in TD’s. If we do that and keep their offense from getting in rhythm, then we have a good chance of winning.

Fsu’s most vulnerable spot is scheme related. They run a 3-3-5 defense. Good defense for limiting a passing attack but its biggest weakness is a power run game. Styles make fights. Whether or not they are good isn’t as important as the style of play. Teams that play like us on offense are a bad matchup for them.

This ain’t the bama of old but they did beat them pretty soundly. It’s okay to acknowledge they are good plus it’s a rivalry game. Can’t overlook anyone
