Hurricane Irma

The keys and Miami are under mandatory evacuation according to the news.......

Not going back and forth with you on this cause it's silly.

My way of thinking is get yourself and your family out of harms way so other people don't have to risk theirs to come get you if God forbid you get trapped. Most of the whole southern part of the state will be under mandatory evacuation come tomorrow
So now if they haven't left today like they should have they can really sit in the traffic because now EVERYONE is leaving.

Last statement on the subject." Please everyone be safe if you decide to do as OCC and hang around during a cat 4-5 storm and if your leaving to get you and your family out of harms way please be careful on the highway.

Miami is NOT under mandatory evacuation. That's nuts and is fake news. Only those in low lying areas and special needs, a very small fraction of the population. I live down here, I actually know what's going on.

Also, the evacuations are to shelters within the county, i.e., still in south Florida.

The only ones that actually have to leave Dodge are the people in the Keys. That's just a few thousand.

Direct hit or not, the vast majority of the population will remain in south Florida as it would be impossible to evacuate millions of people: no place to put them and no way to get them there.

Mandatory evac or not, a lot of people are going to head North.

During Katrina and Wilma, I left Miami and went to Atlanta with most of my friends. If I still was a UM student and/or lived in the area now, I'd absolutely be getting out.

Hopefully everyone does whatever is the best for then to stay safe! This is one scary storm

I'm sickened and horrified that my elderly father won't leave his house on Miami Beach. He's sending my mom inland to a hotel but he's got some old school mentality and thinks he's Captain Ahab going down with the fücking ship but he's not capable of doing this shît anymore. The guy was in the ICU for, and almost died from, sepsis (a blood infection) in July.

I've tried to talk some sense into him but he won't listen. We stayed during Andrew and, while it wasn't like South Dade, it was plenty bad. I thought he learned how scary it could be but I guess not. I just hope the storm turns.

I can't convince my family to come up and stay with my mother in Atlanta no matter how hard I try. My aunt and uncle stayed during Andrew and have this mentality of no hurricane could be worse than that so if they survived Andrew they'll survive Irma and they're keeping my eldery grandmother with them. I'm quite annoyed that they won't evacuate honestly, because this storm is going to be bad.

Miami is not under mandatory evacuation. That's ridiculous people think that. This storm looks like a monster

People referencing Katrina and Wilma. Didn't even lose power in those storms

Yup. Exactly how I feel. They think they can weather anything bc they have before. I hope they are all kept safe. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this too.

Hope all of you in Miami and the rest of Florida stay safe!!! Im in SC so not much of a thing, but there is a video of Irma making landfall in Barbados... she is a beast. Safe travels and for those that are gonna beast out, yall in my prayers.

Irma came nowhere near making landfall in Barbados. Maybe you are thinking Antigua/Barbuda?

People referencing Katrina and Wilma. Didn't even lose power in those storms

Speak for yourself, Wilma's eye ran right through our town (90 miles from Miami) I saw trees flying sideways, shed roofs crumpled up like Coke cans rolling across the yard, we lost power for 2 weeks, couldn't get out of the house because all the roads were under water. National guard was here handing out food and water.

I am talking about myself. But the idea that the entire city needs to leave is just inaccurate and impossible

Not sure what that guy's talking about but I live in Dania Beach and we lost power for 2 weeks also. If you look at the amount of people that lost power in Wilma it's not that far off from Andrew in numbers.

The effects of Hurricane Wilma in Florida were catastrophic, becoming the second costliest Florida hurricane ever recorded. Hurricane Wilma was first evident near Jamaica and was classified as a hurricane on October 18. Initially, orange future prices soared on October 19, 2005. As the system drew closer, schools and government offices closed on October 21. Professional and college sports games were rescheduled during Wilma's advance towards Florida. Evacuations were ordered for southwestern Florida and the Keys. As the storm made landfall, a storm surge swept into coastal sections of southern Florida and high winds led to significant damage near and along Wilma's path, particularly to the power grid. Some locations were without power for 2–3 weeks after the storm. Wilma spawned ten tornadoes in Florida.[1] At least 35 Wilma-related deaths were reported in the United States, all in Florida. Wilma was also blamed for at least 26 indirect deaths.[2][3] Damage in Florida totaled $20.6 billion (2005 USD; $22.7 billion 2008 USD).

Im sorry RVACane, to know that your father is not leaving. I will pray for your family that the storm moves away from inland. I wish you the best and please stay positive my brother. God bless all of you and your families.
To everyone in South Florida please be safe God bless you.

Unless I'm misinterpreting the graphics, none of the major models has Irma smacking Florida directly (as of right now). One of the models has it skirting the coast like Matthew. The rest push it further east. The NHC track from 5AM still has it blasting right up the middle of the state. Something has to give.

Yes, and where will they go? Inland, but still in Dade county. Also, Miami Beach is not Miami, population around 80,000. My point remains.

Alot of this stuff you read in the local papers is clearly click bait. When you see things like, "Miami-Dade planning first major evacuation in 12 years" on the front page of the Herald, you would think its all of Miami but its shoddy journalism as only Miami Beach and the Keys are being evacuated. Some of these media outlets are spreading panic throughout the city but for some reason NOT ONE wants to put they dyck on the table and call this thing..They are all speaking in generic, broad range terms with those dumba$$ spaghetti forecasts. Starting to **** me off.

This is the kind of fear and panic Canes FB brings to college towns across america when they're at the top of their game! Most parts of the country didn't think it was possible for a hurricane to get that far inland until Miami pulls up!
