Hire Herman or Remain Dormant

I want this program to go in a different direction. I want a new, innovative philosophy on offense and to start a new coaching tree. Herman is that guy. Sure there are established coaches I would love to have but if they decline then bring this man to Miami and start a new era of football.

We are so stuck on a "Miami guy" that its killing this program. Sure Butch would be a fine hire, but for me it's time to move on time to start a new chapter and move the program into a different direction and Herman would be a great coach to do that.

if you dont think butch davis can reinvent the wheel you are wrong.

that said i wouldnt mind tom herman. i have no problem with him. but if he doesnt work out lets agree to get rid of him in year 3.

Butch would be a fine hire. He would reload the roster and depending on who his assistants are would dictate how far we go as a program. But in terms of talent, S&C, etc this program would be solid again. It's the Xs and Os that make me nervous about Butch. We would need stellar OCs and DCs.

Its why im all for getting an established coach or going for Herman. I believe you get all of the above that you would get with Butch (aside from the phenomenal talent evaluation) plus you get an Xs and Os guru.

No one is gonna load the roster with almost sure fire talent like Butch will. But IMO you can more than make up for a little less talent with great coaching. I don't know that the reverse is true.

and yes if Herman fails or any coach fails including Butch they should by canned by the end of their 3rd year

Outstanding work, OP. Very thorough writeup that details why he's such an appealing candidate.

Herman's performance at OSU was exceptional, leading an offense that won a national championship when down to a third-string QB who has regressed mightily without him. Proven coaching prowess, player development, recruiting, and massive upside to go along with the perfect attitude to change the culture in the locker room. Demands greatness and would bring a style of play that would be a match made in heaven for the skill talent in this recruiting base.

he could be urban or he could be garbage.

this year houston's SOS is 117th.....

if they finish the next 3 weeks undefeated then i say okay. but beating louisville by 3 points isnt enough for me to crown him.

No chance he'd be garbage here. Worst he would be is very good.

Stop with the strength of schedule nonsense. You guys act like he's at Ohio State mangling crap teams. He's at sorry *** Houston and undefeated and whacking P5 teams in the process. They trashed a Vanderbilt defense that held UF to nothing.

Are you crowning the man who couldn't win more than 8 games with a loaded team?

That's exactly what all the Butch or die guys are doing. They're ignoring 14 years of mediocre records in favor of a loaded roster that some other HC won with.

Don't want. Now Stop talking about it.

I'll be anxious to see if this guy gets an interview, he is definitely an intriguing candidate. I love the fact that he spent time with Meyer, to me the best coach in the game.

Great post. Herman isn't my #1 guy but he's my #1 guy by far if we're going the "hot coach on the rise" route. I would have a big concern on two fronts with a high risk/reward candidate like him in relation to his contract though. Is the guy such a ladder climber that it'd create a potentially precarious spot for us (despite our willingness to deal with this and succeed in the past)? Would we have to have massive buyout language in there to dissuade any quick moves by him to another college program that would also be too large for comfort on our end if we wanted to fire him? I'd really need to gauge his career goals in the interview and be relatively sure that he's only jumping ship for the NFL. Having a guy come in here and get us rolling but then is open to overtures from only programs in like year 2 would be a disaster.

First year Head Coach. I don't care if he's the reincarnation of Vince Lombardi - he's still a big risk as well.

Look at WHO he's beaten this year. Really?

Whatever. UM screws this up, might as well fold the football program.

Great write up, Kyle. Thank you.

Obviously it's "Hire Herman (or another A1 coach) or Remain Dormant," but I gotchu.

Tom Herman will be a beast.

1a. BUTCH
1b. HERMAN

It really should be the other way around. I think Butch is a home run hire but if this truly is a national search then Butch is one of the last names you call simply because you know he'll be there. Call the Chip Kelly's and Gary Pattersons and Tom Hermans, the guys that have "elite" written all over them. Then if that doesn't work out, you have the man who built the greatest college football of all time sitting there begging for the job. It really is a brilliant situation to be in if it's all handled correctly.

I want Herman as the HC here, the question though still remains, does Herman want to coach here?

Another great thing about Herman is that he's recruited sofla and landed Torrance Gibson. So, he's familiar with the scummy waters of sofla coaches and handlers.
