Have you ever switched your sports allegiance? OT THREAD

Sorry to hear of your Mother’s passing mate. Those make for difficult times. As to Rams or Chargers, I’m partial to the Powder Blue over the horns but again, getting a future son-in-law who is a huge Chargers fan so there’s that. As to loyalty of teams, I’ve stuck with my Jaguars through thick and thin, the Canes of course, and my beloved BoSox as well. Times were lean there for awhile but with Boston winning so many titles lately it’s been a Godsend. I remember being on the phone with my Dad who grew up in Boston and not uttering a word in 2004. Just absolute shock and stun that the Red Sox had won the World Series. Thought for sure they would blow it against the hated Yankees in the ALCS. The huge momentum swing put thee. Up against St. Louis who couldn’t handle the groundswell and the rest is history. I think part of enjoying a championship is being there through the lean times, when only despair is the hope one can cling to. But I’m old school and get the younger generation’s love fest with players and no teams. Here’s hoping after 15+ years of futility that our Canes can arise from the ashes anew, and go on a winning streak the likes of what we haven’t seen since the early 2000’s.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I understand the lean times. The Bucs were generally horrible 1976-1978, 1983-1996, and 2001-present. The heavens opened once, and the Bucs won a Super Bowl. In their 27th season. Nothing close since.

I cannot image being a die-hard Red Sox, Cubs, or White Sox fan, having to wait multiple generations for a championship.

Grew up a huge Yankees fan. Father moved to NY in the 60s and they were always on tv down here back in the 80s. Would watch them in spring training in Ft. Lauderdale and at Miami Stadium when they would play the Orioles.

When Miami got a team in 1993 I became a Marlins fan but could not completely abandon my Yankees allegiance. I convinced myself that I could have a team in the AL and another in the NL, and it would be fine. That was until 2003 when both teams met in the WS. I chose to root for the Marlins and haven't looked back. I still like the Yankees but no longer consider myself a Yankees fan. I'm 100% Marlins. Gotta keep it 100. What a bad decision.

Always stayed with the same teams.

Stopped supporting the phins financially when Ross gave a Tebow fellatio festival at the stadium, ie, gave up my season tickets. Got a NFL Sunday Ticket and don’t root for any particular team, just enjoy it... I may pick a team in a matchup, but it’s always because I want the other team to lose. ALWAYS.

Cane since birth. It was meant to be. Canes over everybody. Miami everything else. 305.

Will re-up my phins season tickets when I receive a personal apology from Ross. Otherwise, the only money he gets from me is whatever he makes off my Miami Hurricanes season tickets for stadium use.

That **** made me sick. He honored a Gayturds national championship team in the Canes home stadium, on a day Teblow was playing against the phins, FOH

I switched from being a Lakers fan to a Heat fan as a kid but I grew up in a city without an NBA team and loved Magic Johnson and hated Kobe. I'd be hard-pressed to think of an instance where it's okay to switch allegiances as an adult though.

I remember hearing that a large part of Jason Taylor's family still rooted for the Steelers when they played the Dolphins so having a relative or kid playing for another team might not even be an exception!

My loyalty would end if the team moved to another city. My loyalty could be severely tested if ownership (or school admin, in the case of The U) did not try to win.

In Miami's case they've won 5 NCs. Fans expect to win, not hope to win.

Yeah, I was a Lakers fan before the Heat, but my allegiance wasn't that strong, I supported the Heat as soon as the franchise started.

40 plus years San Diego Chargers fan. I said San Diego. Once that prick of an owner screwed over the city and the fans I jumped ship to an equally bad team.... the Dolphins.

That's a good one that I didn't think of- pro sports franchise relocates. Yup- you're absolutely free to disown them then.

Parted ways with the dolphins a few years ago, but the divorce became official as of this past draft. I am now a browns bandwagoner.

Still a heat fan, but will be rooting for New York when KD goes there next year.

Braves fan fa life.

Canes fan fa life.

I grew up outside of Boston and was a Pats fan. I have been living in Charlotte 14 years and have fully converted to the Panthers.

Like a reverse bandwagon fan. It's just more fun to cheer for the home town team.

Still follow the Red Sox and Bruins.

I'm having a midlife fan crisis and debating switching allegiances for the first time in decades on two sports at the same time. Is this even legal?

NFL- Dolphin since birth, i've been pretty checked out since the Jags buried Marino in the playoffs. I really want to see how the QB position works out in next years draft, but **** i really like what the Browns are building with Highsmith and the rest of them Canes.

NBA- Started a Magic fan - Switched to Lakers the day they drafted/traded for kobe. Hate lebron, lonzo, ty lue. Really think i'm just going to roll with whoever drafts Zion.

CFB-Cane since birth. Death before Dishonor.

Come back to the Magic! I really love this team and I feel like they have a decent future ahead of them. I hate supporting the Devos family but I can't help but to be a fan because I'm probably from Central FL and have been going to games my whole life.

The only sport where I changed teams was baseball, since I followed players more than teams. Been a UM fan since 1981. A Dolphin fan even longer. Been a Golden State fan since the mid 80s.

The Dolphins have been such a disappointment it is really hard to say I'm much of a fan now. I still hope they do well, but I am happier when a former Cane does really well.

"Cause the dolphins make me cry": Hootie understood the long suffering of those of us who lived through the glory of 1972, saw the Truth in Danny Boy Marino, then watched us slowly, painfully enter the doldrums of 3rd world nation in the NFL.

Didn't change allegiance, just can't stand hearing anything about the Dolphins or the NFL now for a lot of years. Thank God for the Canes even as mediocre as they've been. But I can still hope like most of the rest of this board we'll be back one day. With the Dolphins, they just made me despise them.

Second part of the question might be ‘what made you root for your new team’?

Location? Favorite player (perhaps or likely a Cane)? Rival to the team your disowned (less likely)?

I'd like to hear the riveting story about why you root for all Miami squads except for the Patriots.
So my father worked for UMASS Hospital and my sister was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. My family doesn't care much about the NFL so I picked the team where they were from. I was like 6 or 7 years old. My family loves the U though.

I got alot of family from Hollywood and Homestead and they indoctrinated me in everything Hurricanes.

Approved. Just making sure it wasn’t some bandwagon ish.
