From Another Coach: Manny's Problem

one college head coach told me:

"manny is a smart guy and a hard worker. definitely dedicated to running a good program, and always thinking. his problem though is he tries to be friends with everyone. the twitter stuff, having his kids like him, which they do. that's a big thing with him. BUT, they aren't afraid of him enough. with my kids, i keep the right amount of distance to keep them afraid. enough of a distance where i can make sure that fear of me is always there, and they know it's real and they could always be benched, chewed out, kicked off the team, just cause i say so. manny doesn't have that, or at least, he needs more of it."
Agree with this assessment in full and said the same last year during the tail spin. A good coach even lacking talent gets nothing less than 100% effort from his team. And good coaches never lose control of their team.

Manny lost the team last year, and their ****** effort showed me they don't respect or fear him as a coach.

Brother, this is not a jab towards you, but let’s talk about offensive recruiting for a minute in a tale of the tape (I’m only going to include those still on the roster & highlight those who were top 15 at their position):

2017
Miami-four 4 ⭐️, two 3 ⭐️ (Included the #10 OT, #7 DT QB)

2018
Miami-six 4 ⭐️ / two 3 ⭐️ (included #1 & 8 TE, #11 WR, #7 RB, and the #5 & #12 OG)

2019
Miami-one 4 ⭐️/ seven 3 ⭐️ (included #10 WR)

2020
Miami-five 4 ⭐️/ five 3 ⭐️ (included #10 & #11 RBs, #12 OT, #7 Pro QB, #15 TE)

2017
Clemson-three 4 ⭐️/ one 3 ⭐️ (included #15 RB)

2018
Clemson-two 5 ⭐️/ two 4 ⭐️/ one 3 ⭐️ (included #1 Pro QB, # 2 OT, #7 WR, # 7 APB)

2019
Clemson-five 4 ⭐️/ three 3 ⭐️ (included #7 & #9 WR, #5 OG, #4 DT QB, #14 RB)

2020
Clemson-one 5 ⭐️ / four 4 ⭐️ / two 3 ⭐️ (Included #1 Pro QB, #13 WR, #5 OT, #3 & #6 OG)

If we look at just the blue chips that are active on the depth chart for yesterday’s game-Recruiting ONLY:
-Miami had 16
-Clemson had 17 (including 3 five stars)

Here’s the difference between us & them:

Their blue chips, ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE BLUE CHIPS! Ours do not. Furthermore, their 3 star guys are being developed into quality starters.

I keep saying, on paper, our talent gap is not far. But in the locker room?? Oh **** yeah!!! (In my Stone Cold’s voice)
Fair enough, I guess it's an easy mistake to make when our favorite team looks so thoroughly outmatched. The offense just plain looked like a average power 5 unit against Clemson.

A couple things to make note of is that:

1) Clemson has had very good continuity on its coaching staff.
2) Miami has a couple of coaches in their first year with the program.
3) The off-season was heavily abbreviated, making it especially more difficult for those same new coaches.
4) Trevor Lawrence is a special player who will be drafted #1 this year.

So if D'Eriq King takes advantage of the fact that he won't lose eligibility this year, we could have something special next season. In any event, I hope they apply the lessons they learned against Clemson and show significant improvement over the rest of the season.

I believe #1 on your list can’t be stated enough. I believe that’s been a big problem, continuity.

Name of said coach or article or it didn’t happen...

Manny needs to be gone. He should have been gone after last season. The problem is, this nitwit BOT and incompetent AD will just hire another hack lifetime coordinator from a MAC type school. THEY DON'T CARE!
Another two or three years of .500 at best teams, we'll be in the same spot, spinning our wheels and losing 55-0 to any team with a pulse.

Lmao.

I hope you're talking about last year. I didn't see it last night and I watched to the end. There wasn't a lack of effort. There was a lack of channeling it into effective play.

There's a big difference. The latter I look towards scheme and game planning before singling out players (although it could be both).

Very true. Clemson wanted to score bad with the reserves and Miami held. There was some pride right there. This team is not giving up.

Every other coach that guys compare to Manny took years to get where they are. And this isn't saying I don't see plenty of stuff he can do better, but the guy deserves more than a year or 2. Can we at least finish the season and see what comes next? Does the team fold or does it take care of business the rest of the year?

Dabo stunk for a while. How long did it take coach O to win a title? Butch had to watch banners flying overhead but the revisionist history around here is everyone knew he would come good.

Manny been here for 4 yrs. now, he doesn't have years to turn it around........he has 2020

many successful coach’s are feared by there players but you have other successful coaches who aren’t feared and still win, **** vermeil, Pete Carrol to name a few.

we aren’t Clemson yet, but now we need to finish the season strong and hopefully play again and see how we’ve grown
Ppl don't realize with Vermeil is that he's a cool coach, emotional (cried when he had to cut the 3rd string TE when he was the STL coach) but don't **** him off. Lose a game with him he will have you looking like you just got out the gas chamber in basic training. Manny needs to be that perfect medium like him. Someone you want to play for and fun, but don't ever **** up around him. I don't see that in Manny. Ponders too much, there's no pondering in football.

I tried the same technique when I fired girlfriends , it didn’t work as well

It would be nice if he could just figure out which linebacker is the best linebacker on the team. I would just go for that right now. That that THAT would be really good. Just THAT. Put the best players on the field. Can some anonymous coach talk about that?

You can be a HC like Manny Diaz when you have senior leaders setting the tone. Just like the 2001 championship team. Coker himself came out said "They pretty much did everything". If someone messed up, there was an *** kicking happening later. And everyone did it.

Everyone saw Bolden bleeding after his blocked kick, trying to get into peoples faces and wake them up. It didnt work that well.

However, if you dont have the players, the coach needs to set the tone. Like Venables benching his O-Lineman. Like Saban ripping his DC after a TD against WKU late in the game years back.

And if the players cant take someone kicking their butt on the sideline... well, its not working with them.

For what it's worth, when I played organized sports, I absolutely hated little Napoleon coach POS's in the mold of Dabo and Saban. I don't respect guys like that, I don't need their bull$hit. Didn't make me play harder, only made me hate them. I don't think all of these kids necessarily respond to that.

Well, thats you, but they will get the guys that respond to it. And it has worked well for them.

Not saying that you not responding to it makes you a **** player.

Kid from Clemson got a penalty said something to Dabo or made gesture, Dabo took that *** out promptly. We reward dropped passes, misreads, penalties, etc...with more playing time. Its crazy
This. Ask yourselves this - who on this team has consistently played at a level where they've bought themselves security at a starting spot? Off the top of my head - Cam, Bubba, King, and maybe Phillips. We consistently see the same penalties and mistakes. These players need to have it in the back of their heads that their spot could be taken at any moment.

I'm dead!!!!!

Funny both of our teams are having coaching issues, our Canes and our Birds.... 🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️
The injuries continue to be crazy , only one ol starter left, the wr core is mostly guys off the street and the pass d still sucks. Other than that everything is peachy. Btw I think we got something with Fulgram.
