In May 2018, Randall Schriver of the United States Department of Defense claimed that "at least a million but likely closer to three million citizens" were imprisoned in detention centers in a strong condemnation of the "concentration camps".[11][12][13] In August 2018, a United Nations human rights panel said that it had received many credible reports that 1 million ethnic Uyghurs in China have been held in "re-education camps".[14][15]

People are scared to commit crimes in China unless you are rich or politically connected. Lots of corruption. They don't mess around with with criminals. You are guilty until proven innocent for the most part and punishment is real. Forget your human rights, you lose it the moment you are deemed a criminal. Prison system is not a joke and they will kill you for drug trafficking or attempted murder. Criminal life is not glorified and frowned upon by everyone including the entertainment/media. Your family will disown you for bringing shame to the family. Has nothing to do with poverty, the poor in China have far less than the homeless here but don't use it as an excuse to commit crimes. Accountability is what is lacking in this country. On all levels, from government to individuals. Until our main stream culture changes it will only get worse.

It's not impossible. I had to explain to my wife how common phrases I use have different meanings. For instance, "hello", "what are you doing right now", "got a minute", and "shut up" all mean "Let's have ***."

Very unfortunate if true. Where'd you pull the stats from?

Either way, if we add China's (estimated, but unconfirmed) 650K to the 1.65 million incarcerated, that 2.3 million. If we further add the high end estimate of detainees (3 million), the total is 5.3 million. For about 1.38 billion people, that's approximately a 384 per 100,000 rate of incarceration. Sadly, it still doesn't hold a candle to the US rate, which is about 700 per 100,000 people.

You can’t just look at the statistics and then just make a conclusion. We also have the largest amount of drug consumption as well as the largest amount of violent crimes including a ridiculously armed civilian population whether it’s legal or illegal he obtained.

What conclusion did I make? Re-read my post, man. It's just facts (minus one shot taken at Russia). You can draw whatever conclusions you want to from those facts... and that was done intentionally.

As far as the rest of it, I'd say if it is true that we have the largest amount of drug consumption in the world, yet we are hypocritically throwing individuals in prison on long stretches for non-violent, drug-related crimes, then we are clearly throwing people in prison for no (just) reason.

Until someone can logically explain to me why (until 2010) Federal sentencing guidelines required 100 times more power cocaine than crack cocaine for the same 5/10/20 mandatory minimums to apply, for what is essentially the same drug (with the exception that powder cocaine use has historically been more prevalent among affluent white people as compared to crack cocaine), and why there is still an 18:1 weight disparity to trigger those federal sentencing requirements following the Fair Sentencing Act, I won't be swayed. Sentencing of drug-related crimes is targeted among certain demographics in our society.

There could be some very good explanations for this, other than the appearance that the US incarcerates more than other countries. For example, where the US incarcerates people for drug offenses, many other countries kill them. Is incarceration worse? Also, some countries have "work camps" and "education centers" that most in the US would agree violate one's civil rights, and for whatever reason do not fit the definition of "prison" or "jail" or "incarceration" or whatever terminology is used and are therefore not included in the data. But I think reasonable people in the US would agree that those in "work camps" or "education centers" absolutely fit the definition and should be included (but for political reasons are not).

Other countries may very well be under-reporting. In particular in the case of China, and quite likely Russia. And many of the other countries in the top 15 (Thailand, Singapore, Iran) certainly have a different view of what constitutes a capital crime than even the staunchest members of the GOP. I'm not certain there is much evidence of that in Brazil or India, but overall, your point is well taken and fair.

That being said, when the "most free civilization" in the world is incarcerating 700 people for every 100,000, on its face that seems out of whack. And if you trace our own history of incarceration, you will find it peaks after the Nixon presidency and his War on Drugs, and then again after the SRA is passed.

As an FYI, there were approximately 207 million Americans in 1971, 235 million in 1984, and 282 million in 2000. Obviously some growth should be expected as population expands, but the incarceration rate was very clearly surpassing the population growth rate.

Not ignoring the politico of this thread; no I don't believe the police should be defunded, but they should not also have APC's. You need something that big, you need the National Guard.

The current legislation proposed, the only real gripe I have about it is whether the use of force was appropriate, the bar is changed from 'reasonable' to 'neccessary'. Can't agree with that. That is a dangerous slippery slope.

The anti-lynching language in it is laughable. As if attempted murder is not a serious enough offense.

But reduction in military vehicles and gear, civillian independent investigations, yeah, I can get behind that. I would like to see police cars go two-up instead of one-up.

They still should have access to automatic weaponry and be able to deploy it on a limited basis, ala North Hollywood Shootout.

The police are not the military, they are law enforcement. SWAT is not the military either.

I've outshot ERT/SWAT guys at the range, even instructed them. They are better than the average Bear, but they are not Tier 1 badasses the media portrays them to be. Some are quite good. But again, they are not the military and they should not pretend to be.

This is a pretty level-headed sentiment. Consequences have actions, which should be weighed and measured. And sometimes the proposed cure is worse than the disease.

I do believe we have legitimate problems with law enforcement in this country and something must change. But I don't believe dismantling entire police precincts without first considering how, exactly, laws will be enforced in any given community is a legitimate solution to the problem.
