It's ridiculous. Just goes to show you how strong the prison lobby is in Washington. Far too many people are in prison for minor crap like weed.
And the system is also ridiculously, over-the-top punitive on non-violent criminals, and I'm not talking about major white-collar thefts and scams. Drug offenses continue to clog the system and account for about 20% of incarcerations at any given time. The incarceration rate is very real, it just doesn't fit your narrative about who should be doing time, and for what offense.

You can’t just look at the statistics and then just make a conclusion. We also have the largest amount of drug consumption as well as the largest amount of violent crimes including a ridiculously armed civilian population whether it’s legal or illegal he obtained.

Absolutely not. I’m Colombian and the only thing a drug war is good for is profits for the private companies try at help fight the war. But illegal drug trade also had a trickle down economic component to it. But wasting billions of tax payer dollars to arrest addicts since Nixon took office is the very definition of insanity.
There could be some very good explanations for this, other than the appearance that the US incarcerates more than other countries. For example, where the US incarcerates people for drug offenses, many other countries kill them. Is incarceration worse? Also, some countries have "work camps" and "education centers" that most in the US would agree violate one's civil rights, and for whatever reason do not fit the definition of "prison" or "jail" or "incarceration" or whatever terminology is used and are therefore not included in the data. But I think reasonable people in the US would agree that those in "work camps" or "education centers" absolutely fit the definition and should be included (but for political reasons are not).
