Discussion at work today - Banning FCS games

The payout an FCS school receives doesn't even come close to covering the expenses of fielding a football team let alone the entire athletic department. If FCS schools want to balance their athletic budget, they'd drop football altogether. At that level, no sports are big revenue generators but most athletic teams are fairly cheap to fund outside of football. People need to stop thinking that anybody outside of P5 conference schools is really making money with football. It's a huge expenditure for the other 85% of universities that have teams.

The players are sacrificial lambs for the athletic department. As long as the check clears, they have no problem risking these kids.
 
I suggest 2 preseason games against FCS schools. That allows you 2 live scrimmages and the FCS Schools still gets their payday.

Think of how many kids wouldn't have the opportunity to go to college if FCS games are cancelled. Keeping FCS programs alive is one of the few redeeming qualities left of "amateur" athletics.

I get your point, and agree with you, but Old Dominion is a FBS school.

I agree

But you don't see top 20 teams rushing to schedule a NDSU or other FCS playoff teams.

In fact quite the opposite. The more losses they have the more attractive they are.

I believe only 1 win against an FCS team counts towards bowl eligibility. So in this example if UF went 6-6 with 2 wins against FCS opponents then they would not be bow eligible.
In any event it's hard to see UF getting consideration (assuming they go this far) to making the top 4 to make the playoffs with 2 FCS wins.

What opportunities? I guess those are the only options those kids have? What about the D1 schools that dont have football

They sign for maybe $400K and that is the good ones then when you factor out logistics, travel, lodging, and meals, they are maybe taking home half that amount. If you need $200K to balance your budget maybe you shouldnt be in the athletics business.

Most P5 schools arent even making money either

The Ivy League, Pioneer League, Patriot League all offer non-scholarship FCS football and are still competitive.

What? Competitive with what? Ivy league doesn't offer athletic scholarships at all. They only have need based scholarships for students. I don't even know what you're suggesting with this post. The vast majority of kids who play sports at Ivy league schools come from money, so their parents are footing the bill anyways.
