Not to nitpick but Butch was with the cowboys under Jimmy. He didn’t mention it but Schnellenberger learned under Shula with the Dolphins. Both NFL HOF coaches. Is it a coincidence Butch and Schnellenberger both “built” the program twice.

He also had college experience before that (Ark grad assistant, OSU secondary coach, North Carolina state defensive coordinator).

I remember him with the Pats and Jets before USC. Wasn’t sure if he had been a HC in college before NFL like the others which is why I put maybe. Although they got started in college, both Carroll and Schnelly were NFL Head coaches before they were college Head coaches.

This isn’t a fire manny thread but Cowherd makes some interesting points regarding hiring NFL staff coaches as head coaches for college football. He takes a shot at Al Golden here (easy to do). He thinks NFL coaches are better suited to handle the “business” that college football players have begun.

Like Shnelly or even Butch. Miami has not made an NFL hire in decades and we have seen the results. ****, we wouldnt dare poach Johnson or Erikson from OSU or WSU today!

Butch had 10 prior years of college assistant coaching experience, including at Miami.

Guy and gals - I know these coaches had prior college coaching experience. The point is there’s an ability to lead men that just might taught better at the NFL level especially now with social media and NIL. Do you think Butch would have been the same college head coach without going to the Cowboys? Maybe. Maybe not.
My vote is not.

Start at the top. Get rid of Flake, Get Alonzo Highsmith and then search for a coach with NFL ties.
