Manny has told everyone that Williams is his guy over and over...know why? He has said that too. JW does not turn the ball over with the frequency of the other two guys. Manny was hoping that playing it "safe" under center with a strong defense would get the wins.
Manny & Enos likely did choose Jarren due in large part to ball security and data showing that turnovers are a key determinant of wins & losses. There are three problems with this currently:
1) when you dink & dunk too much the D starts sitting on the short & intermediate routes...and the game becomes much much tougher after film is out there for opposing coaches to watch;
2) Jarren threw three INTs in less than 1.5 quarters of football against Va Tech (which completely flies in the face of why they chose him & did lead directly to a loss);
3) stats & data analysis don't tell the whole story in football where the human element plays a major role. Intangibles are huge for a QB. Poise, pocket presence, moxy, leadership, motivating your teammates, communication, decision-making and competitive spirit all count significantly for any QB.
Jarren is an accurate passer when he's healthy & playing well. However, I hope he'll really leverage that last winning drive at Pitt to start showing more fire, life, leadership & competitive spirit as QB1. You can be too cerebral as a QB. You also want your deep threats to feel engaged & likely to receive targets in the game (otherwise they could tune out/start running cr@ppy routes, stop blocking effectively etc).
I'm encouraged that he's planning to run more when his receivers aren't open. It was great to see him laying it all on the line on that key scramble against Pitt. That's refusing to lose...and that's exactly what this team needs. Show them you won't be denied & you don't want to take Ls. Fire up your teammates & let's get this offense humming. Conservative play is great if it prevents multiple turnovers but not to the point where your offense is gaining less than 200 yards.
If Jarren uses all of his talents as a dual threat QB, he will move the chains more consistently. He will also be much more difficult to defend. I believe he is capable still of growing significantly as a QB (getting rid of the ball faster, making faster decisions, going through his progressions and being a tougher, more fiery competitor). I'm rooting for him to continue to progress & start showing some moxy as QB1.
The FSU game is unfortunately not the game to play Tate (other than maybe a series if our O is really stalling out). Tate won't be able to turn the corner against FSU's speed on D. Watch the UF tape again & you'll see him get swallowed up by Florida speed when he ran. I felt bad for him actually. FSU isn't a great team but they have speed. This isn't the game for Tate unless we're really going nowhere with our other available QBs (and Tate is allowed to throw & not just be a runner -- which would totally limit his effectiveness). I do hope we get to see Tate play 2-3 series in another game. I'm curious to see how he does. I think his passing game is unfortunately not too strong.
