There is no excuse for what we're seeing...but the doom and gloom about coaching is just this fanbase's natural reaction to the same **** we see over and over again. Its easy when its first time head coaches and first time in the Power 5 types. They are easy and they fail on their own merit.

But its different this time. We've got a staff FULL of veterans at the highest level of college football that have won at the highest levels of college football. And when you see the same ol **** happening when the staff is not like previous staffs...we need to have a conversation as a fanbase about how to have a different level of discourse...because this "its the coaches!!!!@!!!!!!" nonsense has got to stop. They all may very well fail here...but its not what we've seen through the first few weeks that'll do it...coaches have some fault to accept, but I can not accept full discussions on Josh Gattis' offense when the players running Gattis' offense are doing what they are doing on Saturdays which is the same **** we saw them do under Lashlee and Enos which is have games EXACTLY LIKE MTSU in the past. How in the fvck are you going to judge Gattis' offense when guys are missing blocks all over the place, receivers are dropping balls right in their hands, our QB is putting the ball into the bleachers on a 5 yard curl? These players aren't simply not understanding the offense, they are failing to execute some of the most basic fundamentals of offensive football. We can talk about higher order problems later...but thats after the baseline fundamentals are taken care of first.

I know, its tough to say the players might stink and don't care about Ws and Ls...but maybe thats it.
Def understand the point you're making. After watching some reviews on YouTube I def see that Gattis has done some things that have gotten guys open and whether it was miss throws, poor pass blocking, or just dropped passes, the offense has fluttered.

I was not a fan of Gattis hire but you're right in that our players are ******** the pooch on the field.

This is a concern I've echoed . . . is he a "frontrunner" who is only accustomed to running an offense when it has the upper echelon talent he needs/requires to run his preferred offense. I don't know much about Michigan's roster, but I assume with its recent history he came to a roster already loaded with a bunch of highly-rated linemen (in particular), running backs, WRs, etc.
I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle. I think the guy can be a good OC. I just think he is not in tune with the team and not good at making adjustments on the fly. Or tailoring the offense to the personnel

I thought the first choice was brady?

The more that has come out the more it sounds like Brady’s agent trying to drive up NFL interest.

Seems that Candle, Rees, and Gattis were the ones who were offered the job in that order. Briles was interviewed but that seems to been leaked by Briles to get more $$

I mentioned that in a thread a while back but @Cribby said Cristobal didn't make an offer, so Candle didn't decline as was reported. However, so far no one has debunked the reports that they actually did meet to talk about the UM OC job. Can only speculate as to why no offer was made, one rumor is that Candle wanted to bring his entire offensive staff and Mario said no. IMO, the only coach that Mario should have said was non negotiable on offense is Mirabal, but only because the OL recruits seem to really like him. Besides him, the rest of the staff isn't worth keeping if it means no Candle.

The Toledo Blade (newspaper) had a article after Candle news broke. Said that Candle was basically betting on himself this season, obviously he wants to remain a HC but it seems that Toledo Admin has some high expectations and basically are having him coach this season as a lame duck.

My impression was that Candle thinks he can get a high level P5 OC job whenever but has been holding out hope he can get a P5 HC job. The 73-21 beat down by Ohio St a couple weeks ago probably ended that.

I don’t think he would dictate to Mario or anyone else who should be on the staff, no one would give that kind of juice.

Let me go look for that article.

He ain’t getting a P5 HC job and it doesn’t sound like he will be keeping his HC job unless he wins the conference title.

Honestly with Mario and the rest of the staff we got enough recruiters. We need a play caller/innovator.

What you pulled up regarding his record with Campbells guys shows me that he can win when he has the players.
On your last point, that's one way to look at it. Personally, I think there are better candidates out there for this job if it in fact opens up. Personally, I'd take another run at Joe Brady and Kendal Briles.

Gattis shares responsibility for this offensive debacle, but there are so many times our guys have been presented with scoring opportunities and just can't execute. I'd place more blame on Gattis if it weren't for that fact.

@DMoney I feel you my man, this loss brought out the worst in me. I left Hard Rock ****ed in the 3rd quarter. Gotta go back to the lab and get better 🤣🤣

Here’s the crazy thing when comparing Mario to Kirby…. All Mario needed to do was hire a solid OC to run the offense….. just not whiff

Monken has a good resume but at the time of hiring wasn’t viewed as an elite addition. He’s competent and knows how to use the players and their strengths

That’s all Mario needed to do

Combine that with recruiting and we would be sitting pretty. My other gripe with Gattis is it’s not like he’s an elite WR recruiter and developer of the position. Yeah he was at Bama, but that’s an outlier, and I put more stock in what he did at Michigan

The script for Kirby has flipped from losing all the nfl picks on d but still pretty good, to an O averaging over 40 pts a game and more than 500 yards offense with a walk on qb and their top Wr nobody wanted. Only against Kent state last weekend did the starters play into the 4th qtr. , they have a walk on starting safety on d, also. But culture is big there…playing to an Elite stsndard….making their best on best practices tougher than the games as their players say.

While I agree it appears UGA has opened up the offense a bit. They are terrible example and use for comparison cuz they have an overwhelming talent advantage against everyone they play outside of Bama

That’s the scariest thing to me. And no offense to the insiders on here - but if they knew about it, how the f^ck does Mario, Zo, Rad, etc. Not know this???
I knew it, and that's the scary part because i don't know ****/have zero inside info. I read it on a message board from a Michigan insider when Gattis was hired.....but i think the posts were from prior to Gattis actually being hired so it couldn't have been that hard to find out for Mario when he was getting him.

I put it in a DM but not the main board since everyone (mostly) was in a good mood. I also figured it might be bull**** but it definitely wasn't.

Too many people on here not holding Mario accountable in this. Not saying Gattis doesn't deserve any blame but here is Oregon vs Ohio State highlights from last year. Looks pretty much the same as our offense and there is no Josh Gattis on Oregon's sideline.

Josh Gattis worked under Joe Moorhead while they were at Penn State. They both left in 2018...Gattis went to Alabama, Moorhead took the MissSt head coaching job. Joe Moorhead was Mario's OC in his final two seasons at Oregon.

Anyone who thinks this loss is on the coaches doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
I see why Stevo’nem bounced to Flo ****.

My guess is he thought TVD would be better. I did, too, even while watching the offense struggle around him during camp. His yips are surprising.

As for hiring Gattis in the first place, Mario strikes me as a guy who likes shiny things. I’ve never seen a coach speak so openly about recruiting rankings. Most coaches fall over themselves to say they don’t look at stars. Mario brags about star rankings in an unusual way. The OCs we were linked to in the offseason all had pretty different styles so I don’t think it’s necessarily about type. He wanted someone with pedigree like a Broyles Award.

This is all speculation but it’s the impression I get.
Urban recently said he wanted to be #1 in recruiting rankings. If your keeping score he wants to be #1.

Also admitted they discovered players by going through the rankings.
