I just think it’s different here. Kids are looking for any excuse to not come here. We will see tho. I can’t see this class sticking together if we go 6-6 or worse. If it does then Mario is without a doubt the guy.
Simply replacing Flagg/Steed for Chase/Wesley allows us to have more two-deep coverages. I'd prefer they move JW0 to star and get Blades or TS2 at free with 24 at SS. Let's see what Graves, Porter, and Curtis can do since we know Ivey isn't cutting it.
I think the difference is saban gets coaches that have actually had success coaching an offense, although there are similarities in the schemes there are differences and gattis has yet to have a successful offense that hasn’t had other’s fingerprints all over it.The most obvious answers are usually the correct ones.
The obvious answer being they thought Tyler would be able to handle the change to a system that relies more on the QB to make the correct read and go through progressions and that the arm talent and moxie from last yr would translate
The idea on here that some people think Bama is running some super simple one read air raid passing offense with Bryce Young is hilarious. O'Brien's scheme puts more on Young that what Gattis is asking TVD to do. Everyone keeps saying, "Saban evolved, why can't Mario?!!" Do these people even watch Bama's offense? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills on here sometimes.
I can just repeat myself, the main objective for an offense is to score points.
Get someone in who does that. Look at the high scoring offenses in college football, look at what they are doing and emulate.
Ohio State fans **** themselves vs Wisconsin, because they had to rely on underclassmen. And they went ape**** on a good Wisconsin defense.
I remember people saying he wanted splash hires during the processMy guess is he thought TVD would be better. I did, too, even while watching the offense struggle around him during camp. His yips are surprising.
As for hiring Gattis in the first place, Mario strikes me as a guy who likes shiny things. I’ve never seen a coach speak so openly about recruiting rankings. Most coaches fall over themselves to say they don’t look at stars. Mario brags about star rankings in an unusual way. The OCs we were linked to in the offseason all had pretty different styles so I don’t think it’s necessarily about type. He wanted someone with pedigree like a Broyles Award.
This is all speculation but it’s the impression I get.
It’s not a good thing. But that’s my read on it.I think this scares me more than it alleviates concerns, my brotha.
And very few ppl in the know credit Gattis for thatMichigan was 16th in the nation last year in scoring offense at 36ppg.

i thought the same thing and went and checked and he was...
Call him that and he'll kill you. Please god let us keep Francis
Ha! Sit down FrancisCall him that and he'll kill you.
This could be a good avenue to go through. Candle hasn't gotten any buzz for P5 jobs in a while. If he came to Miami and turned around our offense and was part of turning around the program as a whole, he'd be first in line for a lot of major P5 jobs.
However, I doubt that he'll do it. First, HC's have egos, especially ones that have been in their job for multiple years. Also, Candle's overrated as an HC. Here's his record (47-29 overall, but a little deceptive once you're read into it):
Overall, 55% of Candle's win record is from his first two years at the helm and with Matt Campbell's guys. His record shows that he's not a good recruiter, and his teams have underperformed for a while. None of his teams have won more than 8 games since 2017.
- 2015 to 2017: 21-7 (roster was loaded with guys recruited and coached by Matt Campbell).
- 2017 to present: 26-22
That’s the scariest thing to me. And no offense to the insiders on here - but if they knew about it, how the f^ck does Mario, Zo, Rad, etc. Not know this???And very few ppl in the know credit Gattis for that
32ppg in 2019 just taking over the offense with Shea Patterson at QB..."ppl in the know" (our people in the know thought TVD had a COMMAND of the offense...what is it that 'ppl in the know' actually know?) really crediting some large sweeping ideas for 4ppg (difference between Y1 and Y3...I generally disregard a lot from the COVID year, but ymmv). And very few ppl in the know credit Gattis for that
There is no disputing that our roster has a MAJOR part in our issues. I think anyone who denies that is lying to themselves. That said, Gattis is also at fault for not tailoring his offense thus far to what ingredients he has. He is trying to make Steak and Potatoes with the ingredients for spaghetti.32ppg in 2019 just taking over the offense with Shea Patterson at QB..."ppl in the know" (our people in the know thought TVD had a COMMAND of the offense...what is it that 'ppl in the know' actually know?) really crediting some large sweeping ideas for 4ppg (difference between Y1 and Y3...I generally disregard a lot from the COVID year, but ymmv).
I laid out some of our recent coordinators and showed the statistical difference between their historical offensive output, their current offensive output, and what they did here. One is not like the others...and that one that is unlike the others is what happens here in Coral Gables.
Quick article at the end of last year...
Josh Gattis adjusts play calls to personnel, creating a winning formula for Michigan
Gattis' third year as offensive coordinator has been his best.www.mlive.com
Notice a few things...
What was important...new offensive line coach (you can just incorporate Mario/OLC in their involvement in our offense) running the football (we are doing that), blocking by WRs and TEs (lol have you seen the blocking by these boys...its bad)...
A quote from Kirk Herbstreit from the article...
“I think what he quickly found was, they didn’t have a ton of difference-makers at their skill spots when he first got there,” said ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “And I think, through trial and error, I give him a lot of credit — him and Jim Harbaugh — for instead of saying, ‘Nope, this is the offense, this is the reason I hired you, this is what we’re going to do,’ they played to their strengths.”
Sounds familiar.
So, its the guy who has won the SEC as a CoOC AND Big10 as a playcaller with a head coach that has won the Pac12 multiple times that is the problem...not our roster, whose upperclassmen have lost to LaTech, FIU, got the brakes blown off them by UNC and has shown a career full of the same **** we are seeing through the first four weeks?
Color me skeptical.
Great post, Lu. For sure there were reservations. But there was what I would describe as "cautious optimism," because of the notion that we had stolen Michigan's Broyles Award winner and were now players financially. Personally, I expected that TVD/passing game would be minimized in favor of a more physical, conservative approach and that we'd run slightly less plays but that we'd at least be a competent offense. Obviously, I did not foreshadow what we have seen 4 games into this season.Gotta push back on this quote and your other quote that "no one saw this coming." Perhaps no one saw exactly this result. Gattis' resume was there with the big award everyone referenced. On the outside, it looked like we grabbed "a playoff OC who'd just won the Broyles." It was the consistent argument in support.
There were tons of people - here and on twitter arguing with Gattis himself, lol - who were wondering/hoping/praying his previous approach was really just a product of "being limited by a crap QB." But, the offseason was full of concern and skepticism about what we'd look like and how TVD would look vs how he looked during his 300-yard run last season.
Personally, it was my #1 question in August: https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/my-biggest-questions-going-into-fall-camp.178845/
But, I can link/screenshot some even earlier comments/questions about how it'd look and how it better be something more/different than what we'd seen at UMich. Here's one:
I'm definitely not the only one. FAR from it. I was skeptical, cautious, and willing to wait and see if he'd come in with something more aligned to TVD's strengths and weaknesses (they're still there, maybe worse). He did not. I think part of TVD's yips are precisely because of what he's being asked to do within the scheme and playcalling. That's a rough start to your coordinator function.
There were others who had even stronger stances - saying he'd outright suck. I presume based on what he had shown and they figured it'd be the same here. I didn't go that far because there's always a chance someone adjusts. Instead, SO FAR, he's only validated concerns. If he changes now - and he already went to hurry up more last game - it feels more like an admission of guilt than the genuine understanding of what we needed most.
This is a concern I've echoed . . . is he a "frontrunner" who is only accustomed to running an offense when it has the upper echelon talent he needs/requires to run his preferred offense. I don't know much about Michigan's roster, but I assume with its recent history he came to a roster already loaded with a bunch of highly-rated linemen (in particular), running backs, WRs, etc. There is no disputing that our roster has a MAJOR part in our issues. I think anyone who denies that is lying to themselves. That said, Gattis is also at fault for not tailoring his offense thus far to what ingredients he has.
