PODCAST: D$ and Peter vent on MTSU loss and Frankie Tinilau joins the show

I think the natural question is why did they need to see it in-season (against mostly poor teams) to make those changes? This wasn't that difficult to predict. It's basically most people's offseason concerns (re: offensive approach) coming to reality during the first 4 (Bethune doesn't count) games. I'd be happy with a genuine change, but remain curious about how it even got to that point and if the underlying reason for not proactively addressing it still remains.

***I realize no one except a handful next to Mario have that answer. But, for the sake of the discussion...
Southern Miss should’ve been defcon 5.

TAM should’ve been the overhaul. MTSU should’ve never been allowed to happen.

Mario’s supposed first choice at OC was Jason Candle (HC at Toledo). Hopefully he revisits that this offseason because the school president and AD who hired Candle are gone and the new AD refused to give Candle a contract extension this past off season.
This could be a good avenue to go through. Candle hasn't gotten any buzz for P5 jobs in a while. If he came to Miami and turned around our offense and was part of turning around the program as a whole, he'd be first in line for a lot of major P5 jobs.

However, I doubt that he'll do it. First, HC's have egos, especially ones that have been in their job for multiple years. Also, Candle's overrated as an HC. Here's his record (47-29 overall, but a little deceptive once you're read into it):
  • 2015 to 2017: 21-7 (roster was loaded with guys recruited and coached by Matt Campbell).
  • 2017 to present: 26-22
Overall, 55% of Candle's win record is from his first two years at the helm and with Matt Campbell's guys. His record shows that he's not a good recruiter, and his teams have underperformed for a while. None of his teams have won more than 8 games since 2017.

@DMoney

You had some similar comments about TVD as Colin Cowherd just did about Caleb Williams (body language, when things get hard, etc.), but Cowherd went three steps further about how some of today's players are not used to dealing with adversity and overcoming adversity is something lost on some of today's players.

I would say there are a LOT of players like that on our team. Just lack the dawg in'em. I think you and I would agree, there are very few dawgs on our team. You mentioned two of the very few.

Also, I would agree...MTSU loss was worse than FIU...mostly in part that the upperclassmen on this team experienced the loss to FIU. ...and LaTech. How does a group of upperclassmen accept taking so many G5 embarrassing Ls in their career? This group of seniors will have 3 losses to the G5 under their belt. How many other real P5 programs (not talking about Vandy or Arizona or whatever) have taken that many Ls to G5 schools over the life of their career (say, 4 year span?).

I'm curious how close this group is to the top of that list.

Literally had a a friend suggest that to me as well. I'd be down.

Could you expand on this? Zion has not put on tape 1st round material. What's he thinking?!
Its okay let him go. We need a complete roster purge of anyone who ever associated with Manny Diaz.

I thought the first choice was brady?

No way Frankie or Francis would decommit. @Dwinstitles tells me we can go 0-12 & it doesn’t matter.
You are entitled to your opinion like mine I won’t for sure @ you about it, that ain’t my g code about opinions. I only at trolls most of the time or certain other things. You can disagree dog ain’t nada, but I will say saban lost 6 games yer one and signed Julio Jones and the number three ranked class. Just saying I go by proof of it being done before not what message board fans feel like. From being on Miami forums over the years I noticed when the upper echelon arrive they recruit different. That’s been the only proof of rise to dominance nothing else, I’ll agree with Kirby Smart, Howard and Jimmy Johnson. Just get the elite players and u will accidentally win.

I heard for years on scout that jimbo wouldn’t win a natty, and I remember seeing his first class and said they will win one. I saw Kirby was doing and I said all they have to do is beat bama and they will win one. Just look at the classes and u will know what u are getting most of the time. Butch did it just like that, different time but same strategy. I don’t even have to look these things up they are in my memory, it’s pretty simple. And it doesn’t excuse last Saturday but that’s part of the rebuild, not planned but u go through the pains that’s how it is. I’m sure bama lost to Utah in the second saban year in that bowl game they got bodied. And he lost to Louisiana Monroe.....I’m sure there were fried fans calling for his head then. Do u not think a Julio Jones starting changes coverages for defenses? Do u not think a Sean Taylor or deon can divide a field in half? Difference makers make coaches look good in cfb

All these coaches forgot how to coach at UM? Or we need a revamped talent infusion. It’s one or the other pick a side

I mentioned that in a thread a while back but @Cribby said Cristobal didn't make an offer, so Candle didn't decline as was reported. However, so far no one has debunked the reports that they actually did meet to talk about the UM OC job. Can only speculate as to why no offer was made, one rumor is that Candle wanted to bring his entire offensive staff and Mario said no. IMO, the only coach that Mario should have said was non negotiable on offense is Mirabal, but only because the OL recruits seem to really like him. Besides him, the rest of the staff isn't worth keeping if it means no Candle.

Decisions, decisions, for Mario to Fix this and get those W's.....

The idea on here that some people think Bama is running some super simple one read air raid passing offense with Bryce Young is hilarious. O'Brien's scheme puts more on Young that what Gattis is asking TVD to do. Everyone keeps saying, "Saban evolved, why can't Mario?!!" Do these people even watch Bama's offense? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills on here sometimes.

People just repeat nonsense they hear or read other places.

Bryce Young has a very high football IQ and Bill O'Brien runs a complex offense.

Bama simply has the horses to run it, a quarterback who can execute and route-running receivers who can get open and catch the football.

Miami does not.

But since then, Saban has been forced to change play styles, leading to Heisman-contending performances from Young and other recent Alabama quarterbacks.

“When we played the teams that were spread teams that went fast, that threw RPOs, we lost a couple games,” Saban said. “And I said if we can’t beat them, we need to join them. So we kind of changed styles, changed style of player, changed style of quarterback, and we still want great runners and we want to have great balance.”

Since 2015, Alabama has had four finalists in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (2018), quarterback Mac Jones (2020), wide receiver DeVonta Smith (2020) and, of course, Young in 2021. Three quarterbacks and even a receiver, with Smith and Young winning two consecutive Heisman Trophies. The change in play style is reflected both on the Heisman Trophy ballot and on the stat sheets. Alabama throws more now than it did in years past: this season, Young completed 68 percent of his passes for 4,322 passing yards, 43 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

“We changed philosophies, and I think we benefitted from it,” Saban said. “Hopefully we can continue to get the kind of players to be interested in Alabama that we continue to have that kind of success.

But hey "CIS is saying Saban runs a one read offense air raid" Nobody said Bama runs a air-raid. Nobody is even asking for a strictly air raid.

Still scratching my head why Cristobal wouldn’t just hire an OC with similar philosophies as Lashlee!! Too much of a setback to go with Gattis offense style. A great offense can help a subpar defense. They can’t both suck..

We need both. When you get rocked by MTSU its definitely both
I’m more on the talent aspect of it, things always look better with ole Miami type players or in the modern era.....bama OSU UGA talent
