Who's the greatest Head Football Coach, and why, in The U's glorious history?

No, actually, he didn't. Good catch....Schnellenberger came in on the heels of Lou Saban...late 70s, I think....Jankovich was here for Howard's championship in 1983....and the hiring of JJ and Erickson....Nice snag by you.....Doesn't change my view that Sam Jankovich was the most successful and significant AD the Canes have ever had.....
Sam was AD from 1983 to 1990. Per Wikipedia, "...During his tenure, Miami's football team rose to perennial national power and men's basketball returned after a 15-year absence. Jankovich oversaw several national championships including three in football and one each in baseball, men's and women's tennis, and women's golf." Howard was HC from 1979 to 1983, and compiled a 41-16 record.

Since the Op's topic was regarding the greatest head football coaches ...I was referring specifically to Jankovich's acumen in locating, evaluating and installing three of the five greatest coaches the Op mentioned....

I am not gonna get into that other third rail argument about who is culpable and to what degree regarding stadiums....One dude stated an opinion...and the other guy said his opinion was wrong....not sure how an opinion can be wrong....It's an opinion....

The other noteworthy thing that I can think of that Jankovich did...was reinstate the men's basketball program.....

I mean...I think Jankovich was only AD at UM for 7 or 8 years....In that short period, he found and hired Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson...and resurrected the men's basketball program....JMO, but I think that's a pretty good run....
Sam did not hire Howard, as per my previous post.

Saban for recruiting Kelly, Schnelly for recruiting fast, athletic inner-city kids, JJ for X's & O's and psychological swag influence of convincing the players that they were the best, and Dennis for not messing it up. If I had to just pick one, it would be JJ. And, Jankovich was/is the best AD in the history of Miami sports.

Coach E was a visionary and his one back offense was ahead of its time. He was running a version of the spread decades ago. He doesn’t get enough credit around here .

Your opinion is wrong. The damage was done YEARS if not decades before Shalala was hired.

Sam Jankovich begged and pleaded with the City of Miami to make the Orange Bowl a modern world class stadium.
The City told him to go pound sound. Sam knew what the school and the city were squandering. He was a visionary.

Great. Did he raise the money or just whine about it? If he knew it was an issue, it's all that much more of a black mark on his tenure that we didn't get anywhere with it.

But thank you for proving my point that the issue preceded the Shalala administration by years.

How about Andy Gustafson? Wonder what he would've accomplished if he had a diverse roster? I believe Lou Saban recruited our first black play - Lester Williams.

Ray Bellamy was The U’s first African-American player. In 1967. Bellamy made history again by becoming the university’s first African American student body president in 1971.

Gotta be Schnellenberger. None of this happens without him. He didnt just change the U, he changed college football
My favorite Howard story:

When he was coaching at OU, he had a few of the local radio talking heads to visit him. While he was talking to him, he says, "Do you see all these championships ". They said yes. He says "They cheated for every one of them".
