Who's the greatest Head Football Coach, and why, in The U's glorious history?

Was Jankovich’s foresight just regarding his ability to evaluate coaches, or was there more?
Since the Op's topic was regarding the greatest head football coaches ...I was referring specifically to Jankovich's acumen in locating, evaluating and installing three of the five greatest coaches the Op mentioned....

I am not gonna get into that other third rail argument about who is culpable and to what degree regarding stadiums....One dude stated an opinion...and the other guy said his opinion was wrong....not sure how an opinion can be wrong....It's an opinion....

The other noteworthy thing that I can think of that Jankovich did...was reinstate the men's basketball program.....

I mean...I think Jankovich was only AD at UM for 7 or 8 years....In that short period, he found and hired Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson...and resurrected the men's basketball program....JMO, but I think that's a pretty good run....

First to recognize the need to lock down SoFl talent. He got first dibs. The others had to wait. JJ is my very close runner up.

**** impressive list of coaches for one AD to have found.

Charlie's (HC: 1964-70) best years were 1966 (8-2-1) and 1967 (7-4). The rest of the years his record was not great (19-21-2). He was a historic coach at Miami High were his team's exploits were iconic. Irl Tubbs only coached 2 years at The U (HC: 1935 & 1936). His record was 11-5-2. Best year was 1936, when he was 6-2-2.
I played for Irl Tubbs.

Sam just ran into JJ in elevator. JJ more or less hired himself. Howard has to be the man. He took us from nothing to the top and remade college football. JJ was more a Cane and I love him but ahoward has to get the star.
Some say it really started with Saban. Howard found some real talent waiting for him when he arrived.

Are you sure Jankovich hired Schnellenberger?

No, actually, he didn't. Good catch....Schnellenberger came in on the heels of Lou Saban...late 70s, I think....Jankovich was here for Howard's championship in 1983....and the hiring of JJ and Erickson....Nice snag by you.....Doesn't change my view that Sam Jankovich was the most successful and significant AD the Canes have ever had.....

Lou deffinently put some juice in the tank. He was a good coach. Howard was a different level and brought in better staff, especially Earl as QB coach. Howard and the pipe brought a sense of stability and professionalism we were lacking. Redshirting Bernie while Vinny played some as freshman was example. He let the brainy type mature physically while saving Vinny’s redshirt for the next year to build on the mental side. That said, Lou improved the program.

Hidden star behind most of those coaching supernovas on the list...was Sam Jankovich....Agreed, none of it happens w/o Howard here to get the ball rolling, but Howard (or JJ or Erickson) isn't/aren't here without Jankovich's foresight....

If we ever build a statue to honor our football program, his name should be the first on the list..

that man started it all...

Mark Richt... His contribution to the IPF, his forcing the administration to start paying salaries commensurate with the rest of college football giving UM the ability to compete for coaching talent and building a roster that’s ready to compete talent-wise, and his willingness to walk away from his substantial buyout.
