I have never been a Mario as UM HC fan, but I will say that at least he brings a long suit to the table.

He would recruit like heck. If he didn’t coach well, we’d have better talent for the next guy.

Ideally, we need a program builder / leader. But short of that, someone who either is really innovative schematically, or a fantastic recruiter. That at least gives you something to work with.

But let’s never again hear about ‘ceo’ or ‘UM connections’ rationales. They’re excuses, not explanations.

Coaching tree matters. Richt's coaching tree is a stick. Saban disciples have fared better.

I don't care much for Cristobal but he would have been a far better choice than Diaz.

Difference was that after Coker and Randy, there just wasn't much interest in the program. Golden left it with decent talent, then Richt left it with even better talent and he made some major program upgrades such as the IPF. Hopefully Manny ends up putting it all together because if not, this will have been a major major missed opportunity. Manny fails and this sets us back 3-4 years again. The 17 and 18 classes had us in a position to win now. We needed to win now to continue to have momentum in recruiting and all of that appears to have stalled out. That was also the main selling point of Manny by Blake. In the end Manny should get 3 years, it just sucks it came to this.

What have coaching trees got to do with anything? Cristobal has jumped around too much to be considered anyone's disciple.

I wouldn't consider Diaz from Richt's coaching tree either.

Doesn't he fail t'Franchise's test? He's taken an awful team to the mediocre level (8-5 seasons) and hasn't kicked on from there.

You are correct, I read the wrong line.

He's still the wrong guy. The idea of UM connections is overrated. Johnson and Erickson are evidence of that. Especially when it seems to have a higher value than results.
 
This is all conjecture, at best, because the position wasn't open long enough to conduct any real due diligence on who was genuinely interested or available (beyond the retread names like Greg Schiano).

It very may well have been that Diaz was the best choice, but we put ourselves in the position where we don't really know for sure. That's the problem, the process, not the hire. We've made it such that if we happen to hit on this, or any hire, it's pure luck. Hence, the parade of bad hires that resulted from the same, panicked, process.

The majority of CFP programs have a ceiling. Building an Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Alabama, or Georgia-like roster at Iowa State is practically impossible. There is no local talent base to supply the demand.

I'm not campaigning for Campbell, but I think he's a good coach. Elite? He would need elite talent.

Urban Meyer is a great coach but was never going to win a national championship at Utah. He took the UF job for a reason. Same reason Saban left Michigan State for LSU. Same reason JJ left Oklahoma State back in the early 80s.

I don't think Manny is the type who will have to be forced to make changes. He seems very ambitious about his career. I don't think he'll hesitate to make staff changes if he really believes he can get someone better. Now actually getting them can be a challenge for a first time head coach. Sometimes you need to build a reputation in the coaching fraternity that you are a great guy to work for. Remember that Dabo didn't have the staff in place at first that he does now.
