Who’s the most underutilized player in Miami football history?

Half joking, but Brock Berlin when they forced him under center. When he followed up Dorsey and we changed the offense up to suit his style of play, we maybe could've stayed off our slide for a while.

This isn’t joking, by far the best player in this entire thread in terms of being utilized properly.

Brock Berlin was untouchable in shotgun - he could put up air raid numbers before the air raid existed, yet we kept trying to ram the square peg in the round hole. We’d have picked up another ship if Clappy had realized this.

I've known Jammi since he was in HS....I grew up in Ft Myers. A family member of mine was one of his coaches at UM in 95 when he led the team in receiving. I'm well acquainted with the entire situation, as is @Brooklyndee...we had to keep running him out there because all we had besides him was a young Yatil and a younger Magic Benton...We virtually had no choice.
Jammi biggest issue was himself. We've had our share of AMAZINGLY talented dudes who didn't get enough opportunities. Jammi wasn't that. He was gave opportunity after opportunity and he'd somehow ***** it up. For me my vote would either go to Devin or Willie for most under utilized. But it's so tough to say with this.

Yessir. @Brooklyndee ...as you recall, and answering what @jps2344 said about still running him out there, we had no choice. All we had besides Jammi was Yatil and Magic...Jermaine Chambers was nothing.

And that’s a large portion of my point. He was being run out there so get the most out of him. He had plenty of issues he couldn’t overcome. However, he was a Dennis guy and it was his and others jobs to get the most out of him. How many DB draft picks did we have from the few years he was here? And by no means am I saying he needs to get 70 snaps on each of the ball.

Who in 95’ blew the roof off the house as far as the return game went? No one. The fact he led the team in receiving in 95’ lends some credence to rounding his game out that year. Different day and age but how many trick/gimmick plays was he a part of. Issues aside he was different athletically than most. It’s on him but it’s also on the staff to get the most out of what you have.

I appreciate the personal touch added to your reply as usual. Ultimately he came to mind because he was so prolific in high school and such an exceptional athlete. I think he could fit into the underutilized/underachieving/what could have been categories.

Chuck was his ST coach in 95. His WR Coach in 95 was Charlie Williams (Curtis Johnson didn't get to UM until 96) and Charlie wasn't anything to write home about. In regards to DB play....We had some **** good DBs in 95...and it got much better from 96-onward. Jammi wasn't going to see much time if any at DB.

Yessir. If you ever see me put three periods at the end of the sentence...

I'm DEFINITELY joking...
I was about to say I didn't see that coming out of you. I've legit had people tell me exactly that numerous times over the years. Soon as dudes would find out he came from us it would always turn into another dude we didn't develop enough. Lmfao

Especially if it might help us get some top recruits from Dwyer... AL "10 yards a carry" Shipman.

Braxton Berrios.

Coach Ron Dugans just simply wouldn’t play him in his early seasons. Berrios deserved to play but didn’t quit. When he finally became a starter, he added punt returns to his skillset and was excellent. Yet, he still was underused. Very few jet sweeps and no kick returns to my knowledge.

Imagine if Berrios had been a full time starter for 3 years: catches, YAC, TDs, jet sweeps, punt returns and kick returns. We left a lot of production on the bench by neglecting to put Braxton on the field.
I don’t mean this to be a knock on your comment, but more of a general question for the board.

I watch a lot of cfb. I don’t see jet sweeps as a staple of any successful offenses. I especially wouldn’t run them with berrios, who might have the quickness but not the long speed. But I’d very rarely run them regardless.

What is the obsession with the jet sweep? It’s a slow developing play that goes horizontal more than vertical. It’s a death wish vs any defense with speed.

I just never understood the jet sweep fanatics.

To me, the only way you can objectively answer this question is to looks at what each (underutilized player, at Miami) did when they left.

Otherwise it is essentially a subjective decision based on your own perceived talent of the allegedly underutilized player.

That said, Gus Edwards didn’t really even see the field here. He then went to Cuse got himself drafted, and had a nice NFL career.

He’s got my vote.

Tough question but I’ll add Damien Berry to the mix

I just remember it being glaringly obvious that he should be our #1 back at the time and it took forever for him to get the nod. As soon as he did he produced but I remember the fanbase freaking out
