Who’s the most underutilized player in Miami football history?

I had a feeling the OP would bring up Hester. The fact is, Hester was a brilliant return man, and possibly the best ever. He was bounced around from DB to WR in the pros just like in college. The results were the same. His true talent was returning the ball.

Freddie Capshaw. He was CRIMINALLY underutilized.

“Capshaw scored both a rushing and passing touchdown against Florida State and Syracuse respectively. He is the only FBS punter in modern football history to accomplish this.”

Everybody wants to talk about how Coker should’ve burned Gore’s redshirt in the Fiasco Bowl when Willis went down. Hello, people! Capshaw was just sitting there on the sideline!

Jason Geathers would be my pick. So much talent coming out of Spanish River HS, but he ended up being essentially a utility player for us- a jack of all trades, master of none-type. He came out of hs as one of the top guys in the country, but he ended up backing up some of our biggest legends.

Will never forget that 11 yd run after the McGahee legendary screen pass to win it against FSU.

That's what Geathers was in high school too, just better.

I always thought Najeh Davenport would have been a Heisman type tailback. I know he got hurt and had to move to fullback to get on the field but he was a talent. He had a very good career in the NFL.

I don’t mean this to be a knock on your comment, but more of a general question for the board.

I watch a lot of cfb. I don’t see jet sweeps as a staple of any successful offenses. I especially wouldn’t run them with berrios, who might have the quickness but not the long speed. But I’d very rarely run them regardless.

What is the obsession with the jet sweep? It’s a slow developing play that goes horizontal more than vertical. It’s a death wish vs any defense with speed.

I just never understood the jet sweep fanatics.
The jet sweep can be an effective misdirection play to take advantage of a fast and aggressive defense. Ex. QB looks left, perhaps fakes a handoff going left, then hands off to the sweeping WR going right. The look and fake left can attract the D opening the right side for a fast/quick ball carrier. Not likely a long gainer. But a very possible first down.

Note: the Jets used Berrios extensively on jet sweeps to great success. Canes did not.

Gotta be Frank Gore!!

If Clappy burns Franks shirt and puts Gore in the 2002 national title game after Willis went down , we’d have another ring.
Gore is also an easy answer here but it was more so the injuries that derailed him during his time here. He was set to be the starter in 2002 before that knee injury.

He destroys his knee and Willis comes in and puts up arguably the greatest single season but a UM player ever… It’s actually scary to think what could’ve been had both stayed healthy. Had Gore never went down we easily win the 2002 title and could’ve had the chance to go undefeated in 03 as well. I’ve always said we should’ve went on to break Oklahomas 47 game streak. Had Butch stayed we would’ve. But you win some and you lose some.

This isn’t joking, by far the best player in this entire thread in terms of being utilized properly.

Brock Berlin was untouchable in shotgun - he could put up air raid numbers before the air raid existed, yet we kept trying to ram the square peg in the round hole. We’d have picked up another ship if Clappy had realized this.
Brock would’ve been much better in the modern era spread offense schemes. He would’ve fit in perfectly with a coach like Mike Leach in those days.

Geathers was just overshadowed by better players. Geathers was a beast though!!

Oh dang. Freddy was in my English class. He even pulled the “Do you know who I am?” line with his project partner. (She was Russian and told him she didn’t GAF)
