Where you from? / Origin of being a Canes fan

Raised in Ft Walton. Everyone wore Auburn, FL, or Bama gear. I was always 100% Canes as soon as I become sports conscious. Was hoping to be recruited to play baseball but moved to Fort Worth in high school.

I was born and raised in Hawaii but loves the dolphins as a kid. I now live in Las Vegas. My story is long so forgive me and it's a bit sad too.

My father had terminal cancer when I was 13 years old and we wanted to do something memorable and he wanted to take me to a dolphins game so we made plans to go to the dolphins vs eagles MNF game. But since we were in town we also went to the canes vs Irish game a few days before the dolphins game.

Both games were great as both won easily, but there was something about the Notre Dame game that was more exciting than the game vs the eagles. From that game on, I was a canes fan. I got whatever canes shirts I could get. Both of my parents worked for United airlines so if anyone they knew worked the Miami flight they would get me something if they had the time to do so.

I was also determined to go to UM even though my mother objected because of the cost and the crime rates at the time. I got in and didn't hesitate at a future of student loans. My single mother did help with the last year of tuition using some of the money from my father's life insurance money. I got to see 2 national championship games at the OB too. I'm glad I got to attend UM during the unfiltered glory days where we bullied everyone.

Out of tragedy, I was also given something I'll always cherish and that is my love for UM. I hope my story didn't bore anyone and if you read it all, thanks.

Born in Dade.

Attended my first game at the OB on a Friday night in '55. We beat Bama. They sucked back then.

Jesus, I just looked it up, they really did. 0-10, 0-7 in the SEC.

Born in Doctor's Hospital on the U campus.
Mom and Dad both U graduates and U Law School graduates.
Dad member of U Faculty and U Administration for 40 years
Attended 1st game at OB in 58.
1st game I remember was Pitt in '60 in a heavy downpour in OB.
Went to most home games in 60s & 70s
Moved out of state in 70s but Canes still my #1 team
Have relatives on faculty at the U and try to attend 1 or 2 games a year

interesting. my father was born at Drs hospital in the 50's, I was delivered by the same dr as him in the 70's. Dr. Walter Sackett

I don't know what Dr. delivered me. I checked birth certificate, doctor is not listed. From the dates you mention, it probably was Dr. Sackett.

Edmonton Alberta Canada. '83, 8 years old. Watched Miami beat Nebraska. Never went to UM so prob not a real fan to some idiots out there somewhere in the world.

Born and raised in Upstate NY

Fell in love with the Canes in 84 when we shocked the world. Loved the gritty underdog kids from Coral Gables.

Mom moved to So Fl in 86 and decided to go to the U really cause I loved the football team and was also tired of NY Winters , 87 -90. I think we lost 2 reg season games in my 4 years there.

Greenville SC. Surrounded by Clemson fans.

Was a Dolphins fan as a kid. Being a dumb *** kid, I thought the college Miami team was somehow the college version of the Dolphins. Don't ask me how I came to that conclusion. 35 years later I'm still rolling with the canes.

I'm from Lighthouse Point, Fl.

Graduated the University of Miami in 2000. I didn't even like football before attending school. In all honesty, I think it was after we beat the Gators in 2000. Then, I bought a copy of EA Sports NCAA Football in Aug of 2001. From then on, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the school I went to.

Is Dan Witt Park still a park? Played many games of basketball on those courts.

Me too and yes.

Tell me about Gretzky

Ahahahahaha. Not sure if serious, but yeah growing up in his prime and the Oilers dominance was cool.

I was. I don't really like hockey now, but I absolutely loved watching the Oilers/Flyers in the 80s.

Gretzky was amazing then. He did things on the ice that were incredible. Those Oilersv Flyers finals were fun, especially in '87 when it went 7. The game has changed so much over the years. I remember watching and some guys just couldnt skate great. haha. Now every guy is a great skater. If anyone touched Gretzky, they would simply get beat up. Only sport that allowed that. Quite funny. I remember in grade 4 going to watch them practice for a field trip. They were so cool, Gretzky broke his stick and fired it into the stands. we grabbed it and kept it in the classroom that year, then I took it home. I'm pretty sure it's still at my mom's. Wonder if it's worth any money. Ahahaha.

My old man is from Cuba and was class of 67 at Jackson High

Que bien Brother, glad to see there are some Jackson Generals on CIS. As we used to say; De Pinga el Caso.

I went to Columbus lol. My old man wasn't sending me to Jackson haha.

I went to Jackson with the Dumervil brothers, and some other kids that got d1 schollies. We had a pretty good team almost beat the west in 99 (they won with a few seconds left, qb never returned to school - life threatened was escorted home by cops after game) they had the beaver twins. We got revenge in 2000 tho...

I left for Houston in 85,was Oliver the head coach then? Oliver was the OL coach under Joe Brodsky when I graduated, very good coach.

Don't recall the coach. I was in Houston two years ago, got relatives there.

Grew up in Minersville Pennsylvania. My dad played at UM under Pete Elliot in 1973 until he unforunately failed out from lack going of class. He was the starting tight end on the undefeated freshman team at UM, and was bummed to find out he failed out after he passed away.

He has been taking me to games my whole life. I was real ****ed when Maryland left the ACC that was a good annual trip. Best moment was Hesters return against Temple at the Linc. I'll always remember that.

Went to UNC this year and going back to Blacksburg next year.

My family moved to Miami in 1942. Our first house was on 13th. ave. and 6th. St about two blocks from the Orange Bowl. After several moves we settled about seven blocks away. I attended my first Miami game in 1949 and have been hooked ever since including membership in the hurricane club as well as being a season ticket holder from 1970 until 2006 when we moved away. I actually attended UF but never rooted for them for one minute when they played he U.

From Memphis TN moved to ATL in 97. Became a Canes fan in 2000 when I started to pay attention to CFB. My mother went to Melrose where Greg Cooper came out of. My cousin put together his Senior highlight tape. I’m 26 so I’ve been the butt of jokes all thru school reppin’ the canes. I catch them every year when they play GT in ATL. Waiting on my chance to make it down for a game at Hard Rock. Go Canes!!

Was born and raised 2 blocks from campus on 51st Terrace ... just on the other side of the "tracks" (Red Road). Mom worked there. Dad an FSU grad and mom a Gator grad. But, I spent hundreds of nights listening to the call from Mark Light field through my open window while I fell asleep as a kid. Grew up on that campus going to the arcade, bowling, playing football with my friends at the intramural fields, and skate boarding every inch inch of that place. Baseball camps, entire summer days at the pool (and, later in life, 1:00am, jump the fence high dives before campus security could get there). Swam across that lake more times than I can count and drank more beers on the grass by the Rat than I can count ... all before I graduated high school. My childhood IS the "U". When my friends and I get together, or when I talk to my kids about growing up, almost every story involves that place. It is a part of me and in my blood like nothing else.

I'm from Miami and my parents were both alums. Mom was Summa *** Laude and dad got a doctorate.

They started taking me to Canes games when I was a young kid in the mid '60s. But my attention wandered and I wanted to walk around the Orange Bowl. Dad couldn't keep my attention on the game until he told me to watch #89 on every play. I didn't understand that. I assumed all the players were the same.

Uh, not exactly. Very quickly I was wide eyed and looking at my dad in amazement. #89 was a monster. He would stand up the ball carrier like he was toying with a younger kid, and wrestle the ball away. But so often the referees would intervene and say...nope we ruled forward progress stopped, not a fumble. Sorry Ted.

That example taught me to watch anything but the football for the rest of my life. You'll see the football anyway.

I have vague memories of games from '66 and '67 but the first season I remember in full was '68. Opening game thumping of Northwestern. David Olivo throwing a pass smack into the stomach of a VPI linebacker who raced down the right sideline before being chased down by our fleet halfback Bobby Best inside the 5 yard line. A goal line stand saved that game.

Friday night games were awesome. We loaded kids from the neighborhood into the van for those games. I anticipated them all day in school. Then afterwards we'd eat pizza at some joint like Blue Grotto.

The '70s were fun because we always had enough talent to spring an occasional huge upset or near upset of a top team. Great defensive tackles year after year along with skill position stars like Chuck Foreman and O.J. Anderson, who was an absolute freak. Don't make the mistake of defining the '70s via record only. We were getting close. Fortunately Schnellenberger recognized that and took the job.

When I went away to school at USC my friends frequently kidded me about wearing University of Miami stuff. The football team was mocked. That ceased and reversed when I was a senior.

Now neither fan base fully accepts me because I'll never be a cheerleader type and I'll never give away allegiance to either Miami or USC. Heck, the teams haven't played since 1968. Not exactly an annual conflict. I remember listening to that '68 game on the radio while walking around outside our home late at night. Reception was better out there. Game was not televised locally in Miami. USC won 28-3 while mostly running away from that #89 .

Dude I would always go to Blue Grotto for pizza after the games... and when I was old enough we would hang out at Duffy's, 19th Hole, Fox's or the Bowl Bar.
