We gave up 587 yards

And yet, even compared to those teams, this defense is still in the bottom third. While it happens across the country every weekend, it doesn’t happen to the same team every weekend. To Manny’s defense, however, it does.

We’ve also played teams with very good to great QB play nearly every week.

And that’s before Pit lol

Again, it’s been bad but we’ve played a collegiate version of upper echelon, QB friendly offenses so far too compared to most teams out there.

A lot of familiar names on that list :

Pretty surface level stats there, especially if our bad games contributed to their higher numbers. You’re also completely ignoring run stats, which is laughable at best.

If you want to dig into the number appropriately… Pickett is good, but was averaging mid 300 yards per game. We gave up over 500.

We only gave up 344 to Young, but they also spent the second half pretty much running the ball.

We did great against Howell throwing but also gave up 228 yards rushing at 5 ypc.

Leary at NCSU had his second most yardage by game.

You can make all of the excuses you want. We are not playing some juggernaut offense every week, and we are in the bottom third of the country in defense with a .500 record. Maybe if Manny had actual self confidence and hired a real DC that he didn’t micromanage we would have 1 or 2 losses. But he didn’t and we don’t, and a large reason why is his defense, his recruiting for the last several years, and his decision to take on more responsibility instead of focusing on being the best head coach possible

I’m not making excuses I’m pointing out a contributing factor. We’ve been terrible defensively, schematically and in execution. The dual roles were an awful move.

But it’s ok to point out we’ve faced an inordinate number of top tier QBs too.

Manny's defense always leaves guys wide open. That can be mitigated with a great pass rush like we've had in the past, that's not the case this season. We struggle to get consistent pressure on the qb and are extremely leaky on the back end. Add in the horrendous tackling we've seen and it's no wonder why we have struggled on defense.

This defense has been cratering for the past 2.5 years. We're in a Golden/D'no situation at this point. It was/is Golden's/Manny's defense -- they're the problem.

But you’re ignoring every fact I just laid out, as usual. Sure they played some good quarterbacks, but even compared to their averages for the season, we have given up way more yards and higher completion percentages.

“We’ve played against good QB’s, tight games and upsets happening all over football, blah, blah, blah”.

Who cares!

The fact is that our HC, that is supposed to be a defensive guru, can’t scheme, can’t develop and can’t recruit players that want to play in his system and absolutely not at his supposed specialty, linebacker. That’s the point.

You can argue that Taylor and Williams $igned but there was a lot more to their recruitment…

My worst fear is that not only do they keep Manny & Co but the BOT will fall back to, “ you see, everything is fine” and do nothing on the back end to do the things necessary to be competitive.

We need to cheer on the kids that took a chance to come to UM but Manny needs to go. Kids deserve better.

It would be one thing if I saw qbs making tough throws in blanket coverage. But we’re not. I’ve never seen receivers more open in my entire existence of watching football. Basic crossing routes leads to guys catching the football with no one within 8-10 yards of them. Our soft zone while sending blitzes from duval county is just funny at this point. High school qbs can make these throws and reads. This is without even discussing the seniority, tackling, and gap scheme issues.

I’m tired of watching it. He had a good run from 16-18 but the true manny Diaz is the one who got fired from Texas. He needs to hang it up if he is around next year as HC

We are lacking guys like Joe Jackson, Phillips, Rousseau , Willis, Garvin, Norton, McIntosh on the line. We have a few good ones, but not enough for the type of scheme Diaz wants to run, we just are not getting enough pressure and then missing too many tackles when it breaks. Lacking quality LB's to clean up like Shaq and Pink, those guys could wrap up. Diaz been here 6 years now, that's all on him as defensive Jefe.

It’s incredible, isn’t it? I’ve said this many times now. I’ll never understand the need to make every excuse in the book for a guy making $3m+ a year. It’s weird.

Exactly, the middle of the field stays wide open all game
